Newcomer / Intro Materials gathering: is this normal?

Hello:

Just clocked in 8 straight hours of materials gathering to engineer a simple DBX, and I'm still not done: 98% as per ED Engineer.

No luck finding High Grade Emissions with Proto Radiolic Alloys or Military Grade Alloys.

I just want to know: is this normal? Is this mind-(and butt)-numbing grind what we're up against for every new ship we get?

EDIT: fixed build link.

Nope. The last ship I upgraded took 15 minutes. Bought it it, A-graded all the modules, remote G5ed every module (except the rails), then flew off to test out the results - that took longer than the engineering, but got lots of testing in as I wandered around adding experimentals.

Did you have all the materials gathered already or what?

Always look out for mats. Dont make shopping list like you did. It is not very motivating. Also I recommend just engineer what you have. Test the ship, adjust it. Dont G5 parts cause you got some build from someone and just copy that build. To g3 a build is fairly easy if you have some materials. Your way of approaching engineering is very demotivating. Also you learn nothing from the proces and you might not even like the end result.

And PS: Get a 4a scoop. You will need it.

You need to find a material trader. You can filter for them on the galactic map. There are different 3 types and judging by the materials you mentioned, it sounds like you want a manufactured material trader which can be found in extraction or industrial systems.

I have Achenar and the nearest manufactured trader bookmarked.
And the shard sites.
And the bug Killer. (I don't like Jameson's Cobra).
Best thing about Jameson's cobra is that its only a couple of jumps away from Diaguandri to trade down your mats then fly back. Can do a round trip in a few minutes - not like bug killer!
It's not the most efficient but I still have a soft spot for Dav's hope too!

Build is my own.

Yes! Thank you for the heads up! I meant 4A on that build, don't know why I clicked 4D.

Yeah when I did my big HGE grind a few months ago, I too was a bit infuriated with certain manufactured parts. Sometimes, you'd go to a system that is in say, a War state, only for it to only ever then spawn HGEs in the Boom state there instead, and other such nonsense. I'm certain some of them don't spawn at all, cos I could never find certain things no matter how much I looked, and I sometimes found certain things in states or allegiance systems that, according to most sources, they aren't supposed to appear under. And when you do eventually find what you're looking for, it inevitably spawns them 50kls away with 4 minutes left on the clock, just to troll you.

The only thing you can reliably find is Imp Shields. So as Para says, Imps, mat trader, job done. It really is the only way sometimes.

If you try to gather materials when you want to do a build then yes it is going to seem that way, pick them up as you go along and don't worry what they are until you go to a materials trader and it will be much less so.

Also don't over engineer things G1 armoured can be enough to improve a power pack, G5 sensors is going to cost you nearly a third of your field of view.

Bug Killer is three jumps from Ray for me. Can park the buggy facing two scanable 'thingys'.
No trouble landing, no turret required.
It's just down to personal 'taste', I can't be doing with landing at Jameson's. 🤷‍♀️
