Gankers Exploiting block mechanic

Have you never played the BGS before, or are you being deliberately obtuse?

I'm fairly certain he's suggesting that the reasons for attacking a clean target are immaterial; the authorities shouldn't give a free pass to criminality just because passers by have differing political views.

Frankly, that's a position I agree with. I just think the law enforcement mechanism being advocated is guano crazy.

Indeed. In as little as ten seconds I was already thinking of ways to exploit this proposed system. A truly cutthroat squadron of players would have little trouble:

1) suicidewindering the opposing players one by one, making murderers of them all and effectively banning them from their own system.

2) Working the BGS at their leisure, free from opposition.

Of course, direct PvP is the single worst way to wage a BGS war, and this scenario assumes that both squadrons have the decency to play in open with their goals more or less stated. A more carefree type might simply camp out in... say, an engineering system or Shinrarta itself, tagging player after player and denying them the ability to access these important systems for the sheer ganky joy of it.

It's a terrible idea, and I would hate to think that those like Tiberius feel an obligation to support it out of a sense of loyal opposition to outlaws such as myself.

I don't think this issue can ever be fixed unless the devs decide to commit to either singleplayer or multiplayer, rather than this awkward go-between we have now.

Just my thoughts on this:

- Blocking should be comms only

- People camping important systems and “ganking” noobs should be penalised, heavily in-game. Surely there’s no actual reward in killing a clean sidewinder? Player or not...

- I really, really dislike that private and solo play exist and allows people to influence the game still, so having people forced into those modes just to survive is detrimental to the game itself.

- If you die to someone more than once in any one play session, they should be automatically put into different instances instead. Until the victim returns to the main menu, it should act as the current block feature temporarily, but also prohibits exploitation since it isn’t activated on the player’s say so - they would have to die, twice, first.

As I pointed out yesterday, this is impossible for FD to do on consoles.
Suggesting they do it on PC only is barking mad.
I have no idea about consoles, but this keeps coming up from time to time.
Why is it impossible for a game on console to omit a block function?

I'm genuinely curious about this.
Is there not a single console multiplayer game where you can only block coms?

Well, the problem is that the BACKGROUND simulator was never meant to be influenced in the way it is today, though admittedly Frontier later acquiesced a bit by giving us tools to have more control over a faction's influence. The point is, the BGS is not by design "the game" (no offense to those who have made it their game).

Now Power Play, on the other hand, was supposedly designed from the ground up (albeit poorly) to be a player-vs-player strategy game inside the game, and that's why I'm a supporter of Open-Only (and block disabled) Power Play.

That’s incorrect - the capability to do this on console is definitely there. Every other game in the market has a block functionality that removes communications. I don’t know of any other open-play game that has a blocking feature remove players from the instance you’re in... it’s just a bad idea since it can be manipulated.

What you’re thinking isn’t possible is protecting players from being repeatedly ganked - which isn’t a “blocking” feature, it’s an anti-ganking feature... which as I described could easily be implemented as a feature of the game if you’re killed by the same ship, twice, in one play session.

BGS and Powerplay are quite closely linked though, so actions of one can affect the other and vice verse. Even still, I dislike how players you can’t see, or interact with in any regard, can undo all your hard work, and all you get from it is a traffic report which may, or may not be, accurate,

You must really hate console gamers then.

This would screw up powerplay, where my opponents need to be able to destroy me every time I show up in an area that they need to deny me access to. Although to be fair, I've never died more than twice to the same CMDR in a session. But it does obviously happen, particularly to PvPers. An exemption to the mechanism for opposing powerplay pledges would solve it, but surely too much to ask in this game 🙃

Lets leave aside organised PvP too.

Edit - make it for anyone with crimes on (with PP kills not being a criminal act)

The issue is that the blocking function isn't handled by the game, it's handled via PSN or gamer tag. As a result, how this affects things is up to the rules applied by Sony and Microsoft, not Frontier.

The simple solution really would be then to not have a blocking feature at all, but have Gankers take a severe penalty. Like for every noob they unjustly kill, stack like a 5m bounty on them. If they enter any system at all with any police, they get slapped senseless by security forces restricting them to only anarchy systems.
Ganking no longer becomes profitable (since fly-swatting isn’t going to generate any credits) and the cost to rebuy over and over would discourage them from continuing on with their endeavour.
Then they’ll shift to bounty hunting, which in turn won’t pay out as much for trying to kill tiny ships.

The only exploit then would be generating insane bounty prices for friends to collect.

At notoriety ten, ganking people in a Cutter gets you 6.3 million or more bounty per murder right now.
Not exactly preventing ganks, but it can make your life quite annoying if you can't rebuy your ship any more.

That would be the purpose essentially... make it so it really isn’t worth the hassle.
If they’re notoriety 10, send in a fleet of space cops... make it so that retreat isn’t even an option with some feature that locks FSD out or something.
Basically make it so that if they want to continue ganking tiny ships that can’t put up a fight, that they have to overcome the odds in a fight stacked massively against them every time they jump to a new system (just like the victims have to do). Essentially it’s a case of “here, try your own medicine pal”.

I'm not very familiar what's required by Sony or Microsoft, but since PC players cannot instance with console players anyway, it should have no bearing on how block functions on PC.

On XB, pretty much on PS too, you dont block someone in game. You block it at XBox community level (same goes for friending someone)
Block will affect everything, including matchmaking in all multiplayers games. So it's not an in game feature, it's a global feature.
If i block someone, i will not meet him in ED nor in any other game.

Basically the feature is designed to put off trolls that could follow you in different games. Apparently there are people that do this...
