Will Odyssey be worth it?

That's what I'm afraid of - I'm not sure I would call March "early", and for me April is certainly not that.
But they keep repeating "Early 2021" :cautious:
My gut feeling is they will class alpha or beta as fulfilling the release of early 2021.
I guess you could argue the definition of release however to me it is when we have access to the proper servers and our gameplay counts to our actual commander.

Ah... It never occured to me that they might treat Early Access as "release", but you just might be right.
I really hope this is not the case though and we'll see Odyssey in February - after all alpha and beta might be only week long events...🤞🥴

Well OP if you really are worried why not wait until alpha / beta is in full swing and see what the feedback is like. There will probably be some gameplay footage leaked for you to watch.

Personally I'm going to wait, I'm not interested in a free skin or the opportunity to be an alpha / beta tester so my wallet remains closed until I know a lot more about Odyssey.

So I have limited internet and while I can log in and play solo, playing in open is generally not an option for me. (Not to mention I hate gankers with a passion.) So the question is, before I spend a crap load of shekels for Odyssey, will it be worth it? I can't tell if it is designed more for MMORPG style or if it's balanced for playing solo or with just a couple friends. Simple question, but I love the idea of being able to exit the ship and walk around as well as land on planets with atmospheres. I remember my Frontier days, exploring strange new worlds and seeing the life on the surface as I skim the surface.

I’m sure solo mode will still exist and that there will be combat on foot with NPCs, but for me even just the graphical update is worth the money tbh

I have been one of those who asked for space legs for a long time. It is only fair that now I support FD and pre-order.
Also did it because it looks promising.

Personally I think it will be great in solo, with so much more to do.

"Is it worth it?" is the wrong question. Ask yourself: "What else would I do with $50?". Now you have something to compare the worth with for yourself in your personal frame of money-value. From there, you can get the answer to first question.

If someone is selling an electric grape peeler for £50, I don't need to spend time asking myself what else I'd spend the money on because the question doesn't arise. I don't want an electric grape peeler at any price. If someone is selling a money printing machine for £50, I also don't need to wonder what else I'd spend the money on. I'll worry about that after I printed some.

I'm pretty sure that with Odyssey players will still be totally able to veer off on their own adventures not caring one iota about any MMO aspects, just like the rest of the game for the past 6 years.

If I read between the lines right, you just want to know if it's going to be viable in solo?

I mean, definitely. If that's what you're worried about then don't worry. But if you're expecting us to inform you if the content itself will be worth it... No one can answer that for you, mate.

Any month closer to the beginning than the end can be defined as early in that year. That's fact.

What isn't fact is the bogus 21st April date.

March 2021 is early 2021. The reason they use "early" instead of "March" is because the latter is specific. Just forget about it being your definition of early 2021. Definitely if you think March isn't early. If it was February, they'd just say February. If it was January, they'd just say January. Chances are it'll be neither.

Expect it no later than May, because June really is stretching the definition of early 2021. Even then, stuff happens. Stuff gets delayed. It might be August.

I don't think it will though. Fdev have a track record of releasing stuff on time. Even if the beta feedback yells at them not to.

Now my opinion... as I'm sure there's people agreeing to what I'm going to say right now, pre-ordering was never a good option. My best advice is just wait for that specific thing to release, after that you can watch some actual gameplay from other people and/or the developers. Check the features and then you can make sure whether to buy the game or not.

As of now, no. This thing was announced way back in June, and in between then and now (Dec.) we have a grand total of... what? 15-25 seconds of first person gameplay footage? And the usual "We're exited" banter from the devs. Oh, and a few HUD screenies.

From what I've been shown so far, I wouldn't pay more than 15, maybe 20 USD for it. I sincerely hope they have much more to show off at some point.

Yes. Undoubtedly worth it, if nothing else just for the stunning visuals.

Pre-ordering digital stuff is dumb anyway unless you really want some pre-order bonus.
My 180 USD expansion pass + 60 USD Elite Dangerous base game (that's $240 for those keeping score) are in agreement. No alpha/beta backer bonuses and that sort of silliness either.

The Secret of Monkey Island said it best. "Never pay more that 20 dollars for a game."

Cheers.

You won't know until you play it and see exactly what it brings to judge value. Right now judgements are based on still pretty thin information.

I just hate when they repeat "early 2021". What does it mean? January (probably not) February? I need to know!
Well, they have to fit in an Alpha, and a Beta, sooo ... I wouldn't expect early :)

It would be nice to have an Alpha over xmas, but I bet the devs would disagree with that statement ;)
I was holding onto the hope that David Braben's comment in the online interview he did a little while back, stating Odyssey had been delayed by only days, was factual...
Now with the continuing emphasis on 'early' 2021, I'm more of the opinion that this has changed so radically that an actual release date may exceed the Q1 assurances.
