HP Reverb G2 impressions in Elite Dangerous

I did the same with my Rift S. As it stands you have to install WMR for steamVR and when you run Elite from its own launcher it runs via steamVR. If you launch Elite without steamVR turned on it will just launch Elite in desktop mode.

That's what I was afraid of. It's obvious that the use of several layers of software reduces the performance gains on an already power-hungry headset...

With any luck (though I seriously doubt it) when Odyssey comes out it might support WMR directly.

That would be very nice, as I don't even have a steam account, which I presume I will need to get steamVR. It was so nice and easy to get the Rift working with ED using the native launcher. :)

Alright, I got my Reverb G2 last Friday, having submitted my pre-order in September.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X, GPU: Radeon RX Vega 64 with some tweaks (VGPU down, +50% PT).

My previous and first headset was the Samsung Odyssey+ with a pentile OLED matrix, so that's the only thing I will compare it to here, since that's all I know.
  • Colors & blacks: Colors are clearly more washed-out, but still okay for me. Blacks aren't as good either, but they're pretty close! Better than I thought.
  • FOV: Clearly better on the O+! The feeling of being "boxed in" is quite a bit stronger on the Reverb G2. Still okay for me though.
  • Sweet spot: I think it's smaller than on the O+.. or maybe it just feels like it because of the resolution? I'd like it to be bigger than it is actually.
  • Godrays: There, but they're very subdued. This I really love, because those were nasty on the O+.
  • Comfort: It's a tight fit, and it's not as easy to "just remove for a few seconds", but other than that it's much better! No pain, no red marks left behind.
  • Light bleeding: It's there for me unless I fit it very tightly. But in any case, it's quite a bit better than on the O+, so that's nice.
  • Audio: Can't use the off-ear thingies, loud environment. They're super-easy to remove though, and my Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro phones fit perfectly with the Reverb G2! Very good!
  • Resolution: Jaw-dropping! The sharpness and detail levels really made me go "aaah!", "oooh!" and "wow!" for a while, it's a massive uplift coming from Samsung's pentile panels! Like a VGA to FullHD kind of uplift!! Amazing! This is what I bought it for, and in that department, it delivers!
  • Distortion: Sadly, at least at my IPD setting (~61) I can see distortions near the centre when looking around. They're quite pronounced, too.
  • Performance: I have reprojection off, and yup, it's bad and at times very stuttery on my RX Vega 64. This was to be expected. Actually, it's still better than I thought it'd be. Playable at least, with all settings at max. Framerate just isn't pretty. Where is my 6900 XT!?
  • 60Hz mode not yet tested.
So, there are a few issues (sweet spot a bit too small, same for FOV, distortions near the centre of the FOV), but it's slighty better in a few areas and drastically better in terms of resolution, which really is an eye-opener! Maybe they can do something about the distortions with a firmware update? That's how Samsung successfully dealt with most of the barrel distortion on the O+ after all.

The O+ is indeed better in a few areas, as described above, but after having seen that much crisp detail, there's no going back for me, so I'm playing with the G2 now, despite the performance issues.

Now, as stated above, all I need is twice the GPU power! Like, pleaaase? 😂

Awesome!
You say you haven't test 60Hz, would it be possible to test half resolution mode for me? That might be more useful because I can't imagine many people willing to stomach 60Hz because even the DK2 had higher.
Seeing the quality of those RGB at lower resolution on the other hand...

Uhm... I guess I'm just too stupid or blind or something, but... where am I supposed to activate half resolution mode? I thought since this is a specific feature of the headset it should be in the WMR settings, but it's not.

I guess I could just lower the resolution in SteamVR to make it sit somehere around the 50% mark in terms of pixel amount, but I doubt that's what you want. I read the [setup guide], but it doesn't mention any half-resolution mode. I tried to google it, but couldn't find any sources that would've told me how to actually activate that half-res mode.

Please advise.

Apparently you can get better FOV out of it with a simple mod, might be worth trying for you?

It's a simple replacing of the foam cover with the vrcover ironcially enough for the O+ https://vrcover.com/product/samsung-odyssey-plus-replacement/#207

How's that gonna work though? It's not like the foam covers any part of the lenses? Or do your eyes get closer to the lenses using that alternative cover?

Anway, I've been unable to find any "Half Resolution Mode" in WMR whatsoever, so I just reduced the resolution in SteamVR to roughly 1440p. I would say it's better than the O+ in terms of spatial resolution, yes, but there is quite a bit of aliasing on small fonts, which can make them tedious to read. But then again, it was a strain with the O+ too, given the blurriness introduced by the anti-SDE coating and the generally low effective resolution.

Overall - after having tested a few things like the FSS, galmap, etc., I'm thinking that "half resolution" isn't all that bad on the Reverb G2. Sure it makes the HMD much less impressive, but still better than O+ on average (minus the colors), and Elite runs smooth as butter in that res.

Still not sure if that's what's meant with that Half Res Mode... Given how smoothly it runs now, I might just try something slightly lower than native to see whether it looks nice enough while still running without major performance issues on my GPU.

Ceterum censeo: Still need 6900 XT. ;)

I think one of the side effect of using a vrcover over the original foam is that it allows the lenses to be closer yo your eyeballs or so which has the side effect of increasing your FOV.

According to the comments of the video it seems to work and does increase the FOV.

Thank you very much for trying!
A YouTuber mentioned it and did some comparisons.
Also the website suggests 60hz and also half resolution mode?
No idea!

60Hz are ugly by the way, far more so than it should be. I thought it was just a bug of my O+, but no, it's the same for the Reverb G2: When set to 60Hz, motion seems fluid enough for my eyes, but it shows extreme flickering. If you still know CRT monitors set at 60Hz or 50Hz, that kind of flickering, only worse even. Makes my eyes bleed and burn within seconds.

I've reinstalled WMR already, but doesn't help. No idea why this is happening.

I will ask around about that half res mode, maybe somebody knows more. Or maybe my WMR setup is borked somehow?

I tried 60Hz mode the other day just in the WMR home and it is bloody awful! You can see the screens refreshing. It’s like the screens have been swapped for CRT screens.

I can’t see anybody using it like that unfortunately.

I have the RTX 2080 which has the USB type C connector, do you think it's ok to keep the G2 cable plugged into the GPU? My MB does not have a type C, but I do have the adaptor that came with it. Is the performance degraded when you use the Type C adaptor? I am only asking because HP recommends plugging the Type C directly into the MB.

Pale, did your G2 comes with a USB-C to USB A Adapter?

got my G2 today from SystemActive, got the kit assembled, might have the G2 up and running by tomorrow,
Before I assemble the plinth on casters, so the pc is easy to roll on the ground for easy access.

The Man Cave is coming together 😍

Anyhoo if yours did not come with that adapter, I would email HP to send one out.

(I had a look on the HP Web site for you, but they don't list it.)

It also should make the sweetspot and edge to edge clarity a bit better. But like always at VR, it depends on the Users headshape.

The easiest way to test if a FOV Mod brings you something is to remove the gasket and move the Lenses close to your eyes (but not too close ;)). There is a shorter gasket on thingiverse for 3d printing that brings your eyes 15mm closer to the lenses.

I'm soon getting a Reverb G2 and I was hesitating between keeping my current order for a RTX3080 or cancelling it and getting a RTX3060TI. I'm coming from a 1060.
But from what I'm reading I'm thinking the 3060TI won't be near powerful enough to play smoothly with this monster of a headset...
Thoughts?
