Newcomer / Intro Back to ED after 35 years

Hello everyone,
Just saying hi as I joined this forum. I've recently re-discovered ED after 35 years. I used to play the original Elite on a Commodore Amiga 500 back in 1985, and was utterly addicted to the game. I actually thought the game had ceased to exist years ago (I'm not really into following game news in general) and so big was my surprise when I decided to invest in a new Xbox series S (after not having owned any gaming device for many years) to find ED in a spectacular new incarnation ! :) I bought the game right away and am currenly finding my way around in it, whilst having fun. Some of the basic aspects of the game seem to have become a bit easier than in the original, like docking for example or blowing up pirates. But the host of new functionalities is quite overwhelming so I'm not quite sure where or how to start. I'm also a "lazy" gamer so I don't go looking through all kinds of videos and manuals and forums to know exactly which button to press or parameter to tweak in order to get what I want. So if any of you have any tips on how to start out the "easy" way in ED I'm all ears :)

The game is huge. It's almost impossible to play some aspects of it without a lot of research. Youtube is a big help.

Welcome.
ED is a fabulous game. The best incarnation so far. I too don't really follow gaming so was surprised to see it.
Before coming here, I used to play Oolite which is free to download and play. It is more geared towards the 'old school' original version of the game.
It's here if you're interested.... http://www.oolite.org

Welcome. I did exactly the same thing, except I bought a PS4 with the Red Dead Redemption 2 pack just so I could play Elite. I gave RDR2 away.....
That was two years ago.
Have fun.
I did the same, but with No Man's Sky. I gave that away too.

My only advice would be to not try to get rich quick so you get the shiny toys.
I play with enough cash for three or four rebuys (I call them extra lives) for whatever ship I'm flying and when I get over that threshold I upgrade or trade in and progress through the ships that way. Having several hundred 'extra lives' takes the edge off the gameplay and makes ships pretty much disposable.
Oh, and RTFM if you hit a snag. Understanding how things work makes using them much, much easier. Or ask. This seems to be a very helpful community, even if there is a lot of complaining about not being able to make money fast enough to buy a death star with a hangar full of super star destroyers.

Hah! Another oldie. Welcome!

Sorry but this won't work. There's much, much more to ED than WSAD + mouse & L/R click.
If you don't spend at least 8 hours on varius quality vids, you'll have a hard time to move away from noobzone.
Fly safe! o7

There are various training/tutorials that you can try from the main game menu or the right hand menu in the cockpit taht are well worth doing if only to find out what control is which.

The manual itself has a reputation of being a bit out of date, and a lot of the you tube stuff might well be obsolete so always check how old it is.

Welcome aboard from a Spectrum player from the same era.

I first got Elite on the Acorn Electron back in 1985. It took almost 30 minutes to load from a tape.
A year later I upgraded to a BBC Master 128 and played Elite in colour. That was on a 5" floppy disk and loaded in about 5 minutes.
God I'm so old now. Lol.

Videos aren't necessary (I managed fine without them) but there's an up-to-date beginner's guide at the top of this forum that I found very helpful when I came back to the game after 2.5 years absence. It's a website that explains everything that would be in the manual if Frontier pulled their finger out and kept it updated.

I think your story is similar to a lot on here. I started with Elite in the 1980s on a Commodore 64, loved it, and have been back on this version for three or four years now. For me, the thing to remember is that these days most things you can do in Elite will make you money, so you should really just do what you want to do and let the credits come in. It's a lot easier/cheaper if you stick with just one ship throughout, or at least one ship at a time, as we did in the original game. It can get complex and pricey if you try to own and improve a whole fleet. And for me, I never bother with out-of-game resources, either, and have done just fine. I prefer bimbling along at my own pace and figuring it out as I go. Have fun!

How did you get on with all the Guardian unlocks then?

In my case my wingmates took me and walked me through it.

I honestly don't know if I have ever watched an Elite video, even the marketing stuff. But I've gotten on well in the game all the same.

I couldn't live without Inara and EDDB though.

You're missing out if you haven't watched any Yamiks! :D

Mind you, he's not to everyone's taste and some of his comments can be... stomach churning.

My sense of humour is very toilet so I find it hilarious.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

I'm an old Elite '84 player myself. This version of Elite is by far the best and I'm totally hooked again. I've sunk more hours into Elite Dangerous than in all previous versions combined. BTW from your post it seems you missed two versions of Elite that were released between original Elite and Elite Dangerous. They were Frontier: Elite II (FE2) in 1993 and Frontier: First Encounters (FFE) in 1995.

I've listed some useful resources below. Have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.
