Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I like your taste of music. :)
To clarify: I have a tin ear, I cannot carry a tune in a bucket, and I usually prefer listening to sound tracks (Gladiator, Alien, Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator etc.) ... but the music in that video (though I'd be hard pressed to say what it actually is -- tin ear, remember?) I like.

Thats a lot of sales revenue! Anyone know what CIG is selling? Surely Chris is not conflating pledges with sales.

Remember, they are "promotions", not "sales". CIG has never used the word "sale". :ROFLMAO:

happy xmas all. So, I'm a long time watcher of this thread, but it moves so fast I just can't keep up with it.

I'll just leave this here. Apologies if it's inevitably been shared before...

If my experience is anything to go by - the first time I stepped out on to the surface of micro tech I was struck frozen solid and died in about 15 seconds because of the cold.

Maybe these people have never played the alpha?

Hey what game is this - this looks pretty neat!

Its a pretty grindy and boring game, the name is my-daily-morning-routine-to-get-back-in-shape I know its a mouth-ful. Might not be available in your region, landscape and art are mods depending on where you live :) Its not easy to get out in the cold (roughly -20 celcius at the moment) and when its still dark but the reward comes through on the break of dawn ^^

They don't understand because they don't want to understand.

Also

I mean. I recently went on the shroud of the avatar forums. To check the status. And it’s crazy how bad that game is. While people have spent 25k on this game, people have spent 150k+ on SOTA. And the game looks and plays like it’s from 2005 and runs at 15 FPS on high end rigs. I just don’t get why people don’t go about them

People did talk about SotA negatively and while it was still running over on SA in the SC threads parallels were often drawn. Its just SotA crashed and burned quicker than SC. If SotA had got as much money and lasted as long as SC then the negativity would still be going. But it has failed already.

Don't know if this guy is a fan, a skeptic, or neutral, but he sums it up quite well.

The problem is, CIG have consistently lied about the state of the game, stating that SQ42 is just around the corner in 2015 - when in fact we're now being told that SQ42 is in such early development that they won't show any gameplay at all, for at least 2 years. This means that the earliest possible release date for SQ42 is 7 years after they said it was right around the corner
There's no way to square the progress that CIG were claiming SQ42 had made a few years ago, with the progress that they're now claiming still needs to be done. They're simply incompatible statements, the only conclusion is that the game was barely developed back in 2015, and that CIG lied about the state of the game. Not just a little bit, but a lot, catastrophically a lot. And the game was meant to have started development in 2012/2011
So what happened? Why wasn't the game developed at all back then? Why did CIG lie about it? What's the actual current state of SQ42? Was everything all fake?
The real issue is that if they lied to you then, they'll lie to you now. Combine this with the extremely aggressive monetisation model of star citizen, and the game is rightly considered a joke by most media outlets and a lot of people
Star citizen has always been a game that's amazing around the corner, it has a huge initial wow factor - and then people buy into the promise of a good game in the future. I know I did back in the arena commander days, I was so excited for arena commander to get multicrew so that we could use my friends constellation and pew pew some folks. All arena commander needed was a few tweaks, and it'd be fab
None of that ever materialised meaningfully, and we are years down the line from then - multicrew gameplay still barely exists. Its perfectly fine to be excited for star citizen, but just be aware that CIG have a history of fabricating development progress and exaggerating what's around the corner. What you see is all you'll get for several years - make sure you keep track of what they're claiming and what actually happens
Other than that, feel free to actually enjoy the game - bits and pieces of it are actually pretty fun, just be aware that CIG have a well deserved reputation

Specifically this bit:

The real issue is that if they lied to you then, they'll lie to you now.

Indeed.

Problem is, a lot don't want to accept that CIG lied, they will find a plethora of excuses as to why CIG were misquoted or misunderstood when they said SQ42 was almost ready. They don't want to accept they have ever been lied to.

Or we have people like LittleAnt, who came later, and feel that stuff that happened in the past doesn't count, CIG never lied to them (or so they believe).

tbh, at very first glance I thought it was really artificial landscape. We're not quite there but sometimes it's pretty close. And then I play a pixel-style game and wonder why we would need hyperrealistic looking games.
Open world games maybe benefit . Easier immersion? But then I look at NMS's graphic style and it's high fidelity but not realistic at all.

My current view of the landscape...or rather seascape around me was a bit unrealistic as well when I woke up this morning and looked out of the window. Peering myopically through the thick covering of sea salt, I could have sworn a mountain range had sprung up on the horizon...until I realised the pretty snow covered mountains were actually waves

The wind died a bit later on...down to a mere 50 knots... so I went down the beach...There's normally some sand there.

Yeah, Scam of the Avatar is a pretty well documented joke by now. However, it has the merit of having actually managed to release. And I'm saying that as a backer who still refuses to touch it since the bait and switch from ultima spiritual sequel to virtual-real-estate-mmo. But at this point, what's left to say about SotA? They lied, they went mad with pre-release microtransactions, Lord Brexit left the building, and the game is virtually dead, with a few employees left running begathons to keep the lights on with the money of the few hardcore faithful. That's it. It's not like there's anything left to be written.

Oh? I didn't know that Shroud of the Avatar was apparently canned? I remember checking in on it's development every now and then. It seemed like it was going to be a humble, low budget game that was achievable, that would be nice for a niche audience. The card game ability system sounded interesting, and I thought that the inventory screen looked immersive (IIRC it was a tetris inventory system like Diablo, and the inventory screen looked like a bag, even if it was a 2D texture but it looked kinda immersive), and I heard that the housing customization options were good. I stopped hearing about it so I assumed that it was just that; a humble game for a niche audience that wasn't really successful?

But now I'm hearing that apparently something went really wrong? What happened?

If that's true, then, well, RIP. It seems kickstarter MMOs are cursed, what with Camelot Unchained in a laughable state after several years, (and the developed running off with the money to fund A DIFFERENT GAME), and Crowfall isn't going anywhere. I think Elite Dangerous and Gloria Victis might be the only decent kickstarter MMOs? Well I haven't heard that much about Gloria Victis so it might have gone bad like SotA but last I heard it was moving into beta on Steam so I assume it's doing well enough?

EDIT: oh wow, I just read up on SotA. That's sad.

Annnnd Life is Feudal is shutting down too.

Seems like Kickstarter MMOs really are cursed.

Most recent lie would be the new roadmap. Remember that giant roadmap from a few years ago, when was that, 2016 maybe, when everything was to be done by the end of the year, so they crammed all the tasks in there and they all magically ended at the end of the year ? In there you had just everything that was promised, including the 100 systems, salvage and reclamation, alien races, server meshing and MMO networking, etc. Of course all of that was a huge lie. How can one put an ounce of faith into that new roadmap of theirs ?
