Odyssey: Will ships need new modules to accommodate?

I doubt it (as the items are relatively small) but what about:

  • Weapon racks
  • Suit racks
  • Misc/not considered yet

Tweaking my ships further (even Class 1 slots) for EDO makes my teeth all itchy.

Probably not, I would assume the suits will be "stored" in a separate inventory thing, and for other modules, remember what they did for horizons, adding a new specialized (and seriously useless) special compartment specifically for the Planetary Landing Suite.

Seriously, have you seen how BIG our ships are? In all of that space inside them, you don't think there are already ship's stores, lockers, magazines, etc?

I think Robert Manard has nailed it from a ships modules point of view, and as for the OP's ideas of wardrobes and arsenals within the ships, I hate to be that guy but I don't know if the OP is aware that there will be no ship interiors in Odyssey, which to be honest is a bit of a kick in the crotch.

I am aware, just in a universe where a docking computer takes up a slot, but thousands of Engineer materials take up no space at all, who knows...

The only thing we'd need to transition to planets surface on foot would be airlock / hatches, but those are a key part of the spaceship, I mean, how could we board/disembark without them? Were we welded into the hull? How would our passengers get in and out for PAX missions? We must already have access/egress routes in the ships already.

But now we've established that we won't be able to visibly interact with storage modules for suits/equipment, let me ask another question, where are all our holome (personal livery) clothes stored? Presumably in ship storage. But plausibility is slightly stretched when you consider this question, when they jump into an SRV, or back into the ship, where does the CMDR store those big fracking guns? I mean in this image...

...the gun looks almost as big as the CMDR carrying it. Similarly, that backpack with the jumpjets doesn't look like it would fit in the lumbar region of a pilots seat, so where does it go? But this could be explained by "CMDR's grab or stow this stuff on their way through the ships airlock".

But if you look at most first person games, the typical player inventory would need a truck to carry it all, I know for a fact my Cyberpunk character is carrying enough guns to conquer a small Caribbean country. And when I end up with too much inventory in CP2077 I disassemble weapons to components whose existence doesn't eat into my inventory weight allowance, but often times I go to the gun dealers I "craft" ten or more 8.3lb sniper rifles to sell, made out of the ephemeral weightless "components".

The gist of what I'm saying is that we are going to have to accept a certain amount of handwavium with regards to player inventory / equipment storage, in much the same way as gamers have been doing for three decades now.

Agree, no problem with Handwavium (as you say it’s kind of a staple for games), I’m just tweaking a ship or two in anticipation of ‘ground work’ so just idle speculation about what may or may not be required in terms of modules etc.

We can store 120 items in stored modules. As Odyssey will add items they will probably be stored there. Hopefully Frontier will expand the storage to 240 items with Odyssey otherwise I'm going to have to start deleting engineered items to make room for them. Who knows what weapon works best on foot without purchasing a few. I might purchase several Type-9s to store ship items but Frontier should give us some room to play with the new toys.

Agreed. Many times people have asked for the qol improvement of more space and I hope it happens too, as it can be a royal pita, especially for disorganized persons such as me!

I made a decision to sell all legacy mods (apart from a couple of plasma accelerators that somehow ended up ‘better’ than a top G5 now under the old system).

Only store G5 maxed stuff now (of which there is little spare as I just don’t have the time any more). Just not having all the junk to scroll through is a relief.

Then again maybe Odyssey toys will be available only in Holo-Me like a custom spacesuit with another option to add weapons. Makes more sense with players using ARX to purchase them. I'm OK with that. Others not so much.

Fully agreed. I asked about this during the first AMA and had it answered later in the Q&A thread:

With Odyssey and with it new gear incoming in mind: Are there plans to increase the storage limit for modules?
No plans for this at the moment.

:(

I'm going to be optimistic and presume that no plans to increase module storage to make way for Odyssey gear doesn't necessarily mean we are going to have to make the painful choice of selling a prismatic shield generator to store a sniper rifle or sell the rifle instead. Instead, I'm going to presume that Odyssey first person equipment will be counted in a separate inventory, however, if I discover in Alpha testing that I'm wrong in this assumption, my roars of discontent will probably register on seismographs in Antartica.

Considering the sheer size of our ship, I don't think any new module is warranted. Some basic storage for space suits, a couple of rifles and plenty of ammunition would be just take up a tiny fraction of the volume of most ships.

Requiring a module for that would just be a minor sacrifice for a large ship, but possibly outright break the build of a small ship.

Plus, I would consider Odyssey to be rather a retcon - of course we actually always had space suits and guns aboard, the gameplay just was not able to reflect that yet.

What about transporting troops planetside? Would they all get in business class cabins?

I can hear them now "do I have to fight? I just ordered a Lavian brandy and a shrimp cocktail...Avengers 3306 is about to start"
