Walking Inside Ships Was Never Advertised Anyway...

When I said in this forum that I wanted a way to fuel my carrier out in the black that didn't involve mining, because I found mining both extremely difficult and incredibly boring, there were a great many members that told me...

"It's easy"... "It was advertised mining would be the only way"... "It's the only way to do it, stop complaining"... "You just want the game made easier for you"... "You'll never be happy"... "I mine and don't find it difficult at all"

So this is a personal message to all of those same people who are now throwing their toys out of their prams because they won't be able to walk around ships and space stations in Odyssey...

I won't do it so why would anybody else want to. It was never advertised you'd be able to do this so stop complaining. Seriously, you'll never be happy. The game is fine as it is, you've got planets to walk around, that's all you need.

:giggle:

I knew it wouldn't be long before I got to rub this in a few faces
This is satire, right?

It was never advertised you'd be able to do this

"Another example that we have built into the structure of the game is ship interiors. Now a lot of people have seen that we are designing all the ships with the interiors in mind, how the cargo is unloaded, all of that sort of thing, how damage occurs. And that's because that another thing that we are doing, again down the line, is that you will be able to walk around inside your ship, you will be able to get out of your ship, walk around inside space stations, other vehicles, all of that sort of thing. We've shown the damage on ship, the damage models, imagine looking at that from inside the ship outwards seeing your cargo flying out into space, seeing the flames, trying to fight them. All of those things that we plan with time, they won't be there at the first release because we want to do them right, we want to do them well. All of these will be done as updates. I'll talk some more about that in a second, but the point really is that we want to do it well, but the game has to be structured in a way to allow it from the start. So we are designing the ships so that they work that way, and so that when we come to do it, it's not a problem. When we come to show all this elements, walking around the ship, walking into other people's ships, potentially stealing them, we have got in mind, all of the things, all of the gameplay, the really rich gameplay, that that entails, and it's... you know... to go back to what I've been saying right from the start of this Kickstarter: What is the game I want to play? This is the game I want to play, because actually in many ways it doesn`t feel like a game, it feels like a world that I'm being brought into, and with each of these subsequent updates we expect that that world will get richer and richer, and more and more of the things that we are excited about will be there, you will be able to walk around the space port, you will be able to see gold being loaded into someone else`s ship, you will be able to sneak in and hide amongst the cargo. All of those things are phenomenal gameplay opportunities, where that ship might actually be the ship of another player, so just think where that all ends, you know? All of these things we need to do right, it would be very easy to do them very poorly, and that would be my fear. So these things will not be there on day one.... "

We also plan to allow you to get up out of your seat and walk around your ship. You can see the level of attention and thought that has already been given to the ship interiors from these ship cockpit views in this video:

Of course walking round your ship will be nice, but it is the just springboard for a very significant expansion of gameplay – you will be able to experience the inside of starports and interact with other players and AI characters, and even board other people’s ships in space and take them by force, as shown in this concept piece.

Of course this will be further expanded to include walking around on the surfaces of planets too.

Alpha and Premium Beta customers, and those who have already bought the £35 Lifetime Expansion Pass alongside either Beta or the full game, will have access to all these features and updates for as long as we create them at no further cost.

Elite Dangerous Expansion Pass Store Page - [IE the point of sale] (circa July 2014):

We intend to continue expanding the game both with new content and new features. A good example of this is planetary landings. We have an ambitious goal for landings to include new gameplay and a rich variety of worlds to explore. To achieve our goal we want the planets to come to life. We also want to add leaving the ships so you can explore space stations or board enemy vessels or even just to look around your own. We intend to release small, free updates after launch, but major expansions including rich new features will be charged for, unless you have bought the expansion pass

However, everyone who's up in arms about EDO not including ship interiors is also being a bit silly. Legs aspects were split into two major paid expansions back in the day.

Newsletter 29: Lifetime Expansion Pass - to be withdrawn from sale

For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):
  • Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
  • Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

FDev never said they'd deliver the whole Legs functionality in one go, or guaranteed any order of inclusion etc. So on those grounds it's a bit odd to complain that they're seemingly fulfilling on some of their pledges, but not on others at the same time.

---

Personally I don't mind them focusing their resources on a narrower remit, given how much of a challenge adding Legs to a flight sim is in the first place. As much as I'd have loved to see them add EVA & ship internals with some solid gameplay attached, there's not point trying to add all of the Legs functionality but having no time left to fill out the actual game mechanics & content.

The ultimate test of course will be: How filled out have they made the mechanics & content for Legs on the ground and in location internals ;). Guess we'll see...

Meanwhile, here's loads of Frontier devs including David Braben talking about the future of Elite and walking around inside ships:

Nope - the feature was never even hinted at. 😅
I like that fact you can see DB is still in control - his two wishes were Horizons (planets in a buggy) and EDO (planets).

I look forward to the future threads demanding "where are the asteroid-eating space animals with tentacles" :D

Well, I didn't buy this game with the intent to walk around inside my ship, or even for the VR aspect (yes, I have VR) - I bought a flying my spaceship game with added missions & exploration...

I'm about to buy a Fleet Carrier and know that the first thing I'll have to do is go mining to fill it enough to get to , and return from, my proposed destination (It is being bought in Colonia) - despite my loathing of mining it will need to be done if I wish to move any real distance...

Where is the issue? I don't see it...

Personally though, I doubt I'll ever do this walking around malarkey. It's never appealed to me in any other game. For me (and let's be clear I'm only speaking for myself) Elite Dangerous is pretty damn fine as it is :)
So far it's reached its pinnacle in early 2016 with v2.0, taken as a whole. Naturally, in my opinion.

The more space and things I can do "nothing" in and with without suffering the game's contrived and obliged game-play the better. :p

Well, fair enough as i likes the game too, but if i catches you nerfing things too much, banana will stands against to maintains the integrity of the game.
Also, banana does not walk, it slithers, does not understand what fuss is about.
Silly human panic monkeys...it guesses.

TBH, unless Odyssey ends up getting nothing afterwards... They are still right in their "promise".

They never said it had to arrive at the same time as walking on planets.

It is what it is.

In fact FD never even said this has to be in the same expansion as the core FPS expansion at all!

Yeah, I don't think it was actually ever guaranteed, but definitely advertised and showcased as a development goal, for whatever that's worth.

The games development seems to have been knocked off the rails for a few years there with aspects of it being "prioritized" and the like. I'm not sure what to really expect in the long run, just hope for the best for the game I thought I was buying.

There's a coffee machine in the Krait. I'd BETTER be able to walk back there (once I've landed somewhere) and make a cuppa joe.

I can only hope that one of my dreams will come true one day.
