Third person mode

There are circumstances where using the external camera (to look over walls or get a plan view of your surroundings) can be useful, and it is possible to fly/drive the SRV that way, the compromise is that you lose the scanner & other HUD elements.

A few examples:

I'm also not sure that writing a 'mod' will work quite the way you intend, it might also be against the Terms of Service.

If the API tools allow polling of the same information that makes it to the HUD, and I think they do, then having a third part tool that can provide most HUD info while using the vanity camera is probably quite doable.

It should definitely be against the ToS though, as there are meaningful balance implications.

It's not about the advantage, I just play with the maximum possible fov all my life, it's already a habit.

The problem is, it provides an advantage whether you claim to use it or not. It's a multiplayer game, either play it as it comes or play something else. Yes, I'm aware of mods for other games, they to usually require ALL players to be using them - I don't want a 3rd person view or a ridiculously wide FoV.

Oh, and as a 'mod' it would almost certainly breach the ToS. The devs have made it pretty clear that 3rd person is not going to happen.

But I can use this modification in single mode.

Marginal at best I'd have thought in all but the most specialised of circumstances.

Could it even be policed? If the advantage were worthwhile players would already be doing it ;)

If you want to play from third person without any hud that’s going yo be... hmm entertaining?

At least you’ll have the best seat for repeated ship disintegration.

That said, it’s not possible right now and it’s not simple to do as you claim. The different hud elements activated by you looking at them more or less make this impossible to play without an interior view.

Maybe modifications? I don't think it's difficult to implement something like that. Can you tell the community of people doing mods for elite?

Lol, what on Earth - or, indeed, the Milky Way galaxy - would make you think that? Little about software engineering is easy. Trying to mod someone else's code when you don't have access to the full source is not always easy, either.

People give modders way too much credit. I love a good mod as much as the next guy and have used many extensively over the years. But the developers are doing the heavy lifting, folks. Chevrolet builds Corvettes; Frontier is Chevrolet. An auto detail shop puts a fresh coat of wax on the Corvette and vacuums the floorboards; modders are auto-detailers. They provide a valuable service, but don't for one second think it's a remotely comparable effort to designing and building the Corvette. And when you start talking about the Core Dynamics Federal Corvette... well, now all bets are REALLY off! ;)

Reminds me of thos youtube ads telling you that you can learn to code in 3 months... hahaha. Maybe something simple, not Elite Dangerous

Takes special talent.

Frontier has issues manipulating their own UI as they still seem to be transitioning away from middleware (Scaleform) that is no longer supported.

However, the game provides interfaces that third party tools like EDDI and VA can use, and there is a lot of information recorded in real time in the game's journal/logs. Simply monitoring these could provide at least some of the information the HUD does, and existing tools/overlays could be used to relay it to the player. The main gap in data would seem to be the sensor display.

The OP may be underestimating the difficulty in modding the game, but no modification to the game itself should be required to do a significant portion of what's desired.

But I can use this modification in single mode.

Single mode, still the same galaxy, so the advantage remains an issue. In the end, it doesn't look like it's actually doable. The API doesn't expose most of the HUD info, so you would be flying with no idea of where you are going, what speed you are doing and a whole bunch of other useful info. There's also no way to read the data in real time, as the API uses the Commander logs.

The devs are not interested and it appears that a user mod is not possible, even IF such a mod could be done, it would likely breach the games ToS.

Already have a third person mode, just not a third person HUD. Probably won't get one either.

No one ever had a problem with taking pictures, but if you can use it to take pictures, you can use it for other things, including providing a tactical advantage (being able to observe while one's own vessel is concealed, for example).

Thanks. Good tip, that. I will bear it in mind if i ever get in a tight spot again.

Sorry, first person is the only option your going to get in this game, its fundamental to the Elite Experience. You can get a head tracker which will give you a better feel of immersion in the game and I feel it alleviates the need for a third person view.

The only way to play in a proper 3rd person view is becoming someone's gunner crewman but, as it give you a tremendous advantage, you get a fraction of the reward for kills.

Is there any way to play from a third person? I'm new to the game, I'm just not comfortable playing in first person. Maybe there are some mods? Can developers add something similar?
The text may have errors, I used a translator.
You're not comfortable flying in 1st person? I'd hate to be around you when you're driving your car in 1st person. :)

I'm assuming the OP means 3rd person view outside the ship, not just looking over the shoulder of the pilot.

It would be tough to pilot the ship without the HUD display. Not just the viewscreen display but the menus.

Can the turret gunner crewman fly a fighter?
