Why the constant dishonesty?

I'd have thought maybe people would have wised up to preorders in general by now. But as i said, if you are preordering, then you are part of the problem, because publishers won't stop offering preorders until people stop buying them.
I pre ordered. I trust FDev to deliver.
I trust that they aren't delaying for any other reason than the global pandemic - which seems perfectly reasonable to me.
I trust them because I have got more than my money's worth from what I spent on Elite so far.
If they don't deliver a decent product in a reasonable timeframe then I won't be so generous next time.
This doesn't affect my pre-ordering of any other product.

The trading statement literally says that Odyssey will release on PC before the end of FY2021, therefore in May.
You said
This latest delay is from "Early 2021" (which includes April as per your own commentary)
Frontier's Trading Statement said
" our initial target for Q1 2021 (January to March) "

I don't know why you're trying to make this so hard.

Indeed and I don't disagree with that. But I don't personally believe that they didn't know it was going to have to be delayed when they made the preorder live. This is obviously, just my opinion. They certainly knew the console version was going to have to be delayed, hence why there was no preorders or discussion around it for consoles..

Regarding the former, i'll give them the benefit of the doubt. We don't know how hard FD have been hit by covid, how many staff have been infected. How many man hours have been lost in the last month.

The latter is more questionable, unless they really have been hit mega hard and have had to make a tough decision. Otherwise they would have already known back in December. On the other hand, they never did preorders for consoles.

As to alleged "dishonesty" (hahahaha!) regarding development and release windows this is the timeframe as i recall:

  • 10th Dec 2020 = London and surrounding areas including Cambridge are in Tier2 lockdown
  • 11th Dec 2020 = The Game Awards, during which new Odyssey trailer is released and PC pre-orders begin, including an Alpha option. Early 2021 launch window is given
  • 14th Dec 2020 = new more infectious variant of COVID19 is detected in UK which is spreading faster
  • 17th Dec 2020 = London and surrounding areas moved to Tier3 lockdown. Most FDev staff probably begin xmas & NY break?
  • 23rd Dec 2020 = most of the country moved to a new heavily restrictive Tier4 lockdown, effectively cancelling xmas for almost all families in an effort to safeguard lives
  • 3rd Jan 2021 = Most FDev staff return to dev work? Families make appropriate arrangements for Tier4 of work, education, care, etc
  • 4th Jan 2021 = a new new mega restrictive Tier 5 lockdown is being considered to safeguard human lives
  • 11th Jan 2021 = UK now has the highest number of infected per capita in the world, deaths continue rising
  • 13th Jan 2021 = Odyssey delayed, PC to May, consoles to Autumn, probably as a result of many meetings among devteams about their livelihoods, health, family arrangements etc, and what may happen under Tier5

The only dishonesty i see is from people apparently putting a game expansion's prompt release at higher value/importance than human life and health. Astonishing.

How nice of you to completely disregard the discussion in this thread and just drop by to tell us everyone who talks about the delay is an awful human being and doesn't value human life (what?).

Sad to hear the console developers were hit so much harder by the lockdown than the PC developers.

Wow if they finally saw the gaming community, including the 8 million new free epic users, are actually more sensitive to quality than their usual standard I’d be impressed. Delays are fine but the dog food grade patches frontier consider good enough not really.

As long as we don’t get another palms up dog food and delayed that’s all we could manage patch like beyond and carriers...

.... but I doubt there’s any real correlation they’re just late. The lagging marketing material implies it if anything.

Delay for a better product is fine. Paint jobs keep selling, they are not going under.

I hope they are taking the time to develop more character-based narrative related content.
Yes, this whole delay IS bcuz of colors. their doubling down on cheap ways to make money...now introducing polka dots, plaid overlays, corduroy and a new paisley print 3300- 6000 ARX a piece.

Our motto is "if it clashes with the universe then add plenty"!

And umm, no character content.

With regards to the console delay, I'm pretty sure that's not really in their interest and may well be causing them some worry.

At that point next-gen (or current gen, as they will be) consoles will be established and starting to get some good games out which will be taking advantages of their capabilities. Into this market walks Frontier with an add-on to an old-gen game which doesn't bring the game up to the current standard.

It'll be fun and all, but new players might struggle to see the attraction.

Starting to take preorders knowing full well at that point the game was going to be delayed.
But that depends on each person's perspective.

Living in the NW of England, (where we've had basically only 2 months of 'no lockdown' restriction's of some form, since last March), when I pre-ordered my copy of Odyssey I knew damn well that there was very likely going to be another delay on it's release.
Yet I still placed my order & I wait............nothing dishonest about it.
Now if Frontier suddenly announce bankcrupcy or liquidation because of ONGOING financial difficulties, yet they still took my money.....that would be dishonest!

The thing with people complaining about preorders being available 'knowing full well the game was getting delayed' is that, A) it's your choice to pay money for something that doesn't have a release date and B) ED has been running for years with constant development, it's not like Frontier are going to run off on holiday with your 20 quid.

It'll be ready when it's ready and anyone who whines that they can't have it RIGHT NOW need to give their head a wobble.
