I'm a dork for thinking my ship names are cool

Dorky metal band names and classic Sci-Fi are my go to.

My commander name is actually based on a Nottingham Art Metal/Rock band called earthtone9

Python - Candiria - Named after the most elaborate genre crossover band I know of....
Phantom - Spylacopa - named after a side project by the guitarist of Candiria
Eagle - Star Fury - B5... Nuff said.
Krait MKII - The Megalodon - Named after an EP by Corrosion of Conformity.

Can’t remember the names of my others without logging on.

I, too, am an old Deadhead, new to this game (I played the DOS version in the ancient past), and I will also be using Grateful Dead song titles/lyrics as ship names (I may use RUSH tunes/lyrics also). I may toss in the occasional science fiction reference, probably from some Robert A. Heinlein, or L. Neil Smith novel.

Alright, alright, among the MANY reasons that I'm a dork, one of them is that I think my ship names and livery are clever and cool.

I'm a child of the 1970's, arguably the most fun decade of all time. My favorite band has always been the Grateful Dead, and I usually incorporate some sort of Grateful Dead theme into the games I play. In ED, I named my CMDR Jerome (Jerry) Garcia. All of my ships are named after a Grateful Dead album or song, and I put a not-insignificant amount of time (ok, an embarrassing amount) into coming up with something contextually relevant for each.

  • Steal Your Face : My Cobra Mk III, which I use as my cool- and silent-running smuggling ship. Because I'm "stealing".
  • Dupree's Diamond Blues: My Python that I mine Low Temp Diamonds in. Complete with sleek metallic blue livery.
  • American Beauty: My all-purpose Anaconda, because American Beauty is the best all-around studio album the Grateful Dead ever produced (their live stuff was always much better)
  • Anthem of the Sun : My AspX exploration ship. Because I see more suns in it than any other ship. Kind of flimsy, but it's coolness is augmented by a lovely golden-orange livery option.
  • Skull 'n Roses : My combat Fer de Lance, because I rack up kills. And presumably someone puts flowers on dead pirates' graves.
  • Mars Hotel : My passenger Beluga Liner, because obviously.
  • Shakedown Street : My Diamondback Explorer. Ok, kind of a reach, but I mostly take my DBX to Guardian Ruins because of it's good jump range and conveniently-placed top utility mounts for point defense cannons. The song Shakedown Street is about a once-great area that is now seedy and run-down, but that still has soul and hidden gems if you poke around.

I'm waiting for carrier-mania (and bugs) to die down before I buy one, but it will be called, simply, Grateful Dead. Because it the heart of operations and encompasses everything else.

So, in summary:

1. I think my ship names are so cool that I posted to an online forum about it.
2. Therefore, I am unquestionably a dork.
3. You read my post and, though you don't want to admit it, you also think my ship names are cool.
4. Therefore, by extension, you are also a dork. o7

Rep' for avoiding pun-names.

Shiny Bacon - Type 9
Fat Agnus - Krait mkII
Denise - Krait Phantom
Puddle - Hauler (soon to be renamed)
Avid computer nerds know where two of those came from.

My Cobra is called Duster 2 because my Sidewinder was called Duster.

I have a personal rule that I cannot change the name of my ships (after they've been named) until it explodes and I have to rebuy.

So if I don't like how I've called a ship I have to wait until it gets destroyed. Self-destruct or "suicide" by fast ramming something with shields switched off doesn't count. Flying in open at a "hot" spot where there are gankers is a good way and no salt spilt. :)

As you can see from my avatar, my motto is Invictus Maneo. Morior Invictus.
Translated this means I remain undefeated. I shall die undefeated.

This is because when I started out playing I set my own iron-man mode - so if I died, I would reset my save. And playing this100% in Open became one hell of a challenge. But with the arrival of Engineers and Thargoids, this became too tough, and I abandoned it.

But, this ethos remains, and so all my ships are called Invictus (undefeated), followed by their role:-

AspX - Invictus Rimor - Explorer
FDL - Venator - Hunter
Mamba - Interfector - Assassin
DBX - Indagator - Tracker
Python - Advector - Carrier (general mission runner / utility ship)
Corvette - Pugnator - Fighter
Cobra - Cursor - Messenger
Viper - Praeterferor - Racer
Krait Phantom - Traferor - Transporter (bubble taxi)
Anaconda - Bellator - Warrior
Cutter - Mercator - Trader
Chieftain - Redemptor - Redeemer (this is my Anti-Xeno ship. It was after my first Thargoid death that I abandoned my iron-man mode and carried on. After 6 months lying in a hospital bed in Maia, repairing my broken body, I now have an overwhelming fear and hatred of all things insectoid).

Glory to Mankind!

The Fleet Carrier (when I get one - 6 years in and only 3.5 billion to my name), will simply be known as Invictus. The home of the Invictus fleet.

Of course, I think this is SO cool.
Of course, it isn’t.

All my ships, following on from the style of ship naming in the Expanse (a mixture of real-life and fictional historical figures for a lot of naval vessels) I use local history to fuel my ship names. Anyone familiar with the post-industrial wasteland of north-east England might well recognise the pedigree of my hauling and mining ships like the Dorman Long, Henry Bolckow and Infant Heracles; for my more combat focussed builds I lean towards The Beautiful Game like my long-range explorer DBX the Juninho Paulista named for the greatest little Brazilian to ever wear my local team’s colours, and my Adder the Viduka named after the second greatest Australian hero since Ned Kelly. My Mamba hull, gathering dust until I know what I want to do with it is the Adama Traore because it’s a clumsy speedyboi. The real icing on the cake is the ship registration which is always prefixed Uniform Tango Bravo, because it makes me smile to hear every flight controller in the galaxy announce UTB and express their support for my local team wherever I dock. Bonus rep for those who spot the references!

My ship names;

The end of all Things

Starbows End

The Long Way Home

The Crime and Glory

So any guesses without checking on the internet. Keep in mind there may be several wrong answers to each of them.

My Fleet Carrier doesn't have a name, I haven't settled on one I Iike so it remain so until I do.

Isn't "The end of all things" from Lord of the Rings trilogy?
(or do I blame the movies for thinking that?)

No it doesn't, but nice try, the sources for my names preceded the LoTR trilogy and aren't related to anything LoTR. As I said, you can probably connect them to a few things, but not all of them are correct.
