As kids we would take empties into our local shop and get 5p a bottle. We'd then slip round the back of the shop wait a few mins, climb over the back wall and take a few more empty Corona (see....its on topic....) bottles and go around the front straight back into the shop and get more money for the empties.. It was years before they sussed us out..

It was after this that money for empties disappeared.

Originally it was made of tin, after ww2 aluminum was cheaper so they made it out of that. The name just never changed.

Tin cans though were not made of tin, they were tinned a process similar to hot dip galvanising, to stop the steel rusting and spoiling the food. Now they are lined in plastic.
