I must admit I was a bit puzzled by how these two ideas were being argued by the same person in the same discussion:

Seriously though, in a time based progression game, such as most MMOs and Elite in particular, among others, grind for power of one kind or another is actually indeed the normal. Not new though, that is how it has almost always been. And that is one of the reasons why p2w in those games, unless somewhat limited or significantly counterbalanced will basically kill them. For p2w to work in Elite FDEV would really need to completely overhaul gameplay, rewards and balance accross the board and introduce principles such as subscriptions and/or bridging currencies such as the ones in EVE online or WoW. Or, as I said above, just throw the towel.

no, seriously. i have said my piece. i have understood your point, i'm not so sure about you understanding mine, but it's all more or less said, it's all there. you now can keep nagging at some imaginary contradiction because you need to desperately be right in matters of opinion, but i really see no point and, rather importantly, no fun in this.

I guess that is what I was referring with throwing the towel. Elite like some of those were not created as p2w. Proper P2W requires you to design and balance the game from the ground up to achieve it. Othewise you need to overhaul to some extent (EVE) to balance or deploy it in a limited fashion (WoW). Alternatively simply bulldoze p2w, gameplay be darned, to milk end of life. With EDO not even released yet it does not seem to yet be the case in Elite either way.

The crazy thing is, when I bought ED, I'd seen SC mentioned too, saw it was alpha and thought "soon then" and then, reading around, saw it had been in alpha for 5 years already!
I don't understand how CR is getting away with milking folk for so much money, nor how anyone can sincerely compare a released product (no matter how poor or otherwise their opinion of it) with one that makes no attempt to do more than publish another roadmap to the "cake tomorrow"
