Will / Can we ever have City Planets and Full Atmospherics?

Some cool ideas, so city domes would work, I remember those from Frontier. I just wondered if the Cobra Engine would be able to generate rivers, seas, jungles and complex weather in the future. I suppose you would have to think about it, land near a clearing - get out of your ship and wander into a forest while the wind and rain poured down. Would there be life NMS style?

I dunno - just dreaming I guess, tech is moving along nicely - but are we realistically there yet for a game like ED?

While playing away on Elite, I landed on some random ringed planet some 2000 ly from Colonia to do some raw material mining - while driving up a hill I was hit by a spectacular view of the systems sun shining through the planets rings against a field of stars, it was truly a ‘wow’ momen.

But it got me thinking - could Elite ever manage full weather patterns - like flying through a rain storm with the rain streaking across your cockpit, the storm clouds of a gas giant, a dense forest world or the best yet - a city world bathed in neon future tech?

What do you think? Personally I don’t think it can but I can hope!

Don't know about planet-wide cities, but i'm pretty positive that they'll eventually add procedural generated cities in something like their fourth or fifth expansion (considering Odyssey the second).
Not sure if before or after wild ELWs, definitively not before gas giants (with atmospherics, we already know it's a tech they are working on for a while, even if it's just a prototype. don't remember were to find the video) and water worlds.

PS: Found it, here's the man himself talking about gas giants back then:

Instead of creating same looking algorithmic space I think it would be much convenient to implement city planets and full atmospherics on a limited scale by creating terrain constraint spaces. By choosing a descent to a desired port for example Earth like world your flight would be completely automated allowing your to relax and watch the landing process from leaving space void to touchdown. That would be much more resource-wise and time-wise solution from a developer perspective than creating huge and unique worlds in thousands, sorry but on current level of tech we can't have a multitude of Microsoft Flight Sim-like worlds. Choose between hand crafted and vibrant small world vs dull algorithmic space with poi's.

Well, I think it’s crazy to think they could actually pull it off.

But with technology evolving the way it has,
As a kid born in the late 70’s,
I thought Virtual Reality was a pipe-dream,
Until it was not.

REAL-TIME ray tracing? Oh come’on that’s just brute force and totally unneeded and not going to happen...oh it did, and okay, it looks a amazing and now I’m in the queue for an RTX card.

Watching robocop1, we got to see GPS tracking, with a hand held plastic box with a backlight street map with an obvious red led sticking out.
And now I’m on the toilet using an actual PDA seen in ST:TNG with one of those maps as just a background app :)

Yes with a but, no with a maybe.

Only time will tell i'm afraid. There are lots of things FD could add to the game. How much they will add over the years before it reaches EoL, who knows?

What is this, Wimpy? Don't need cutlery with Kumo Burgers.

I'll be honest, if the Elite dangerous project ever reaches its end of development and hasn't achieved at least procedurally generated earth like worlds (assuming Earth may be forever locked from access as a worst case) then I'll see the whole project as unsatisfactory and incomplete.

The scope is vast, no doubt. But the way I see it, fdev are incrementally adding the base line for stuff that'll eventually make this possible (at least, it wouldn't be possible without this groundwork).

But I don't agree this isn't possible. It's all possible. It's just a question of how and how long. And yes, it's still a big if too. It may never happen. But fdev have been very clear they'd want it to happen.

So you've got the will. That's a big part of it. As was Horizons and as is Odyssey, obviously. I'd assume the next major expansion would bring fdev just a little closer to it. So maybe an expansion with accessible domed cities (the cities update)? Atmospheric, but uninhabited/low population worlds (the Weather update)? We'll see.

I don't think FD could do it, but of course I hope they can. Someone like Rockstar would be technically capable of it, but it would likely need an engine built from scratch for the asset streaming to work well enough. Maybe years down the line it can just be brute forced with hardware improvements.

Of course I could be completely wrong, it could simply be a matter of having enough people interested in the game to justify the funding and manpower to get it done.

Cheers up for the optimists,I've lost mine long ago
🍻

What if hypothetically speaking of course, Odyssey when fully implemented is a complete remake of Elite: Dangerous with the new Cobra Engine with native versions for PS5 and Xbox x.
Say end of this year for us to Amish the bugs for them as we go, the game having wacky problems regularly because it is unique and tests best in the wild.🤣

TGIF Cmdrs!👍
