The only way to know if the ED servers are offline is if a player posts a message on this forum. Maybe that's what Frontier uses to alert them to the fact?

Yep, we were hunting pirates in a wing, all 3 of us got the black screen at the same time... I remember few years back there used to be a warning in-game when the servers were about to go down for maintenance, I guess that's not anymore...

Actually I get a red server offline message in my launcher these days, and did this time .. now it's green again ...

I wonder if thats the reason.. maybe to many tryina play on Sundays and now with all the epic accounts the server cant handle it.
