Would you go to the beach

Felicity Farseer at the beach, with Etienne Dorn borrowing Bottom Hat’s binoculars.....I can’t un-see that image now.

Nearly every ELW I orbit I can’t help looking for the cove or small island that I’d make my home. I live in a city so I love sand, except for what it does to books and sandwiches....and I can’t walk across it in flip flops, actually I just can’t walk in flip flops.

I'm pleased that I could help with your mental imagery!! ;)

Trust me it gets very boring very quickly, particularly on windy days.

If I open the windows for half an hour to get some fresh air and the wind picks up all of a sudden it’s all over the house 😑

But I also spent about 10 years living in a city before I moved back to my home town and got sick & tired of pollution/noise.

Still don’t know which was better/worse 🤔

I live in a city by the beach for 14 years, have been there an handfull of time. I hate sand too ! But I would go in Elite if we were able to, sure. Except if we could get sand in the ship. Then no

Same here, lived in south Florida, OK when I was a teen and took girl-friends there to do what lusty teens do.

But the salt air is extremely corrosive, sand gets in your car, and later, when we took our kids to the beach (they were young then) the outfits that people would wear were pretty gross, hard to explain that to small children. We quit doing that. Also skin cancer keeps me out of the sun. Had a scare with that.

Let's go to the beach! NOT!

Aside: I just noticed that the penultimate paragraph in that post seems to predict the mechanics of synthesis using gathered materials, and even touch on the fringes of Engineering, several months before Horizons introduced them. I should have sent FD an invoice.
So we can blame you for engineering?

;)

One of the strongest urges I had when I tried nms back when it launched was to find a nice location to "set up" at. The rapid realisation that (at the time) this wasn't possible almost instantly turned me off. Well, that and the excruciatingly arcade flight model.

It's sometimes frustrating knowing nms has the tech to do what it does (as Sci fi as it is admittedly) but Elite is fundamentally years from getting to that stage, because I think Elite does almost everything else better.

Frame Shift Drive charging...

Warning: Sand detected in the frame shift drive. WARNING. Catastrophic failure imi-
My explanation on why computer systems weigh so much in the Elite universe is that we have gone back to Babbage Difference Engine technologies and therefore they are all high precision gears and cams.
Sand would be an absolute nightmare.

Aisling Duval is there though, she strips down to her birthday suit but then takes off her blue wig before running into the sea for a paddle.
