Oh I'm not proud of itNothing to be proud of,you know people carry on giving Chris Roberts millions for a poopooty Alpha,after all these years, chickens will remain chickens no matter what
I may even have suggested previously I wasn't going to, but in my case I was always going to buy it and play it, bugs and all, so .... sue me 
I'm not talking about the struggling publishers here or indy developers . Frontier are worth millions, as are all the big gaming publishers that pull this pre-order trick the most. They do it because their first train of thought is to rake in as much money as possible, as quickly as possible. Finally releasing something worthy of the hype they churn out comes secondary to that.
It happens time and again, and its only the gamers that suffer in the end, with frustration, often having to jump through hoops to get refunds, or essentially being used as 'post-release' beta testers .. the irony of which is they've paid for the privileged!

As for Star Citizen, I won't ever give them money even if it ever does get released (lol) and actually works.
Ok, so I'll turn it around again...
(my position over Frontier's abilities is at odds with others - but we are all convinced we are right. Yes?)
I have available finance to pre-order at the time it is offered - but have no guarantee that around the time of release (anticpated in early 2021 at the time - not particularly changed) I'd have the luxury of buying because of RL demands... so the benefit (apart from a skin and OST - and alpha access) to me is that using that disposable income (around the price of a good meal for the family, if Lockdown wasn't preventing such) ensures that I get the game when it is available...
Naturally, it could have earned around £0.00038 interest had I left it in the bank, or been spent on another frippery... Tough call, I admit.
You, naturally, will make your own decision based on your own situation... As did I.

There can be benefits... I "pre-ordered" Cyberpunk 2077 (knowing reasonably well how buggy it was at the time already), but just a day before, and only because it allowed me to preload it via Steam. Calling that a preorder is a bit of a stretch though, even if technically true. Normally I don't bother unless there are tangible benefits in doing so (so, mostly not).It was not something "against" you,simply,for me, I'm not preordering anything since ages,experience teaches you the ways

) begrudge you for it.I just can't justify it myself, and the Alpha thing is very much principle based... yes I have a couple of spares left, just about! This game managed to squash a fair few already such as "no microtransactions" or "not purchasing the same game twice" - but I can justify those by the number of hours of entertainment I get out of Elite.
I would check out the Alpha if it was part of a pre-order, and that might even sway me - but not at a premium price. Hard no to those shenanigans, I just don't want to encourage this practice it's not a money issue for me (apart from the fact that I expected the DLC to be about a tenner cheaper than it's sold at).

Oddly enough, so did I!
(it was a bit of a surprise to see the prices when announced as I'd expected in the region of £20...)
But if you buy from Argentina it is only a little over a fiver... (and if an Aussie... costs even more than here!)

Again it's really just a principle thing, Frontier got me by the cojones and as such I spent a small fortune on this game, but did get my fair share of entertainment out of it so no regrets (well, a number of cosmetics I do regret buying, but sunk cost and all that). I clearly have the money but as you say it was surprising to see a DLC getting awfully close to AAA full game pricing.
I started to view Elite more like a hobby than simply a game so it's all good but yeah, I do hope that price translates to meaty and high quality content. I'm not convinced we'll get either but hope springs eternal eh... I'm still looking forward to it regardless though.
Companies can go broke, not deliver and not refund. Money is complete loss then.
