Hold me, tell me everything's going to be ok.

Hi team!

I played Elite on my C64 in the 90s, and loved it, I got Elite Dangerous about 2 years ago, had a go, got confused, stopped playing it.

Fast forward to now, I treated myself to VR two weeks ago - playing my only VR game Elite Dangerous was a no brainer... oh my sweet baby Jesus, what a feeling, blew my tiny egg shell mind.

I'm a happy commander.

Although I did screw up, and had to start again.

I'm on the verge of screwing up for a third time and need a pep talk, I need some salty sea dog to take me under her or his wing and tell me everythings going to be all... right.

I've just stored the Sidewinder, and blew the majority of my hard earned Pilots Fed License starter mission credits on a Cobra MK3, now I'm starting to get bewildered.

I'm looking at the missions and none of them seem feasible!?

I can "resource X commodity" - but looking on the galactic map, things are MILES away WHAT IF CAN'T REFULE ON THE WAY?!

Maybe I should fly to another station and find more humble mission - BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THAT, ALL THESE POINTS OF LIGHT LOOK THE SAME!?

I watched a video on mining, got all the kit, flew off to a ring planet (as advised), fired the Prospector into the ring, then for 4 minutes just watched a probe glow dimmer and smaller before being told it'd been destroyed.

...I just flew back to the nearest station and decided to sleep on it.

I'm reaching out to you brothers and sister, I really want to get into this game, I've had so much fun over the last 2 weeks, but I just worry I've got no focus and I'm going to start messing around and ruin everything.

HELP ME

There there, everythings going to be fine.

You'll find considerable tutorials and useful Information all over YouTube. I recommend EDTutorials by cmdr exigeous to start. Down 2 earth astronomy is good once you have a better feel for what you're doing . Useful web pages like eddb.io and inara will help you with other incredibly useful information.

It can be a dangerous galaxy cmdr, take care of yourself out there

It's normal to be confused early on, the game doesn't tell you much and there's a lot to learn.

My advice is to just keep at it, you don't have a lot to lose at this point. It might be good to go back to your Sidey and leave the Cobra for when you've gotten your space legs. Experience is the best teacher.

Well if you're gonna pass out on it every night can you blame people for walking on it to make sure you're alright?

It's the only way I can get insurance. They told me I needed a burglar deterrent but I don't get on with dogs. And I sure as hell won't stay out there all night without proper insulation. (In the form of liquor).

Therefore I pass out. They should leave me alone, like I'm a sculpture. A sculpture of dignity.

Like the last time I ed myself, I have a warm satisfying feeling.

:giggle:

I just like being told what to do.

Some good advice there thanks.

What "jobs" did you start with?

sourcing commodities?
shooting bad guys?
courier services?
sandwich run?

When I started, we could fire a prospector into the ring and watch our cargo holds fill up with Void Opals. I miss those days.

Ok, since you had a C64 in the 90s, you're probably old enough not to be scared by the likes of Rubbernuke or Bottom Hat, so I don't need to take you by the hand and show you the (usually) more friendly place over there.

But yes, everything will be ok. Or not, depending on whether you're the kind of person to throw their toys out of the pram at the first setback. Or the second, or third - ED can be nasty that way. But as long as you adhr to the basic rule
Don't fly without rebuy!
you'll be all right, no worries.

You can do it the way most of us oldtimers did - just play the game, and read what you are offered on the screen. Explore the game. Or you can go and watch tutorials on youtube. Some of them are made by excellent CMDRs, like Exigeous or Obsidian Ant, some are made by people you wouldn't want your kids to meet in real life, but they know their stuff, like Rinzler or Yamiks, and some are made by some nameless streamers who are just after the clicks. Oh, and a lot of them are outdated. Anything older thhan six months, handle with care. Anything older than a year, forget it or at least check more recent sources.

To address your two explicit points from above:
If you can't refuel: call the Fuel Rats. They'll fill you up and give you a free lecture about route planning, refuelling and fuel scoops. A real deterrent to call them only in a real emergency :p
All those points look the same: you have a galactic map (usually called galmap) in your ship. That's an immensly powerful tool if you learn to use it. You can filter for star types, economy, show population or the current state a system is in, you can even see visualizations of the (local) major trade routes. Or you could go to one of the external tools (I still prefer EDDB, other people prefer Inara) and ask them the right questions. Basically - if you can think of any problem or question in ED, there's probably a website for it.

Although I did screw up, and had to start again.

you can't screw up in this game up to the point of having to clear save. that will simply give you a new freewinder which you already have. all other ships you buy are automatically insured, you will get them back no question asked as long as you can pay the fee which is a ridiculous 5-10% of the ship's value. that fee is called "a rebuy". don't fly without rebuy and you will be fine.

the only people to use clear save are those with billions of credits and all ships who get bored to death and have identity crises, so want to get born again.

you simply seem to be overwhelmed ... which is just natural. rest assured, the game is far simpler and easier than it seems, just take it a step at a time, and mind your steps but don't overthink it. failing a mission or even blowing up isn't the end of anything, actually it means very little unless you are loaded with months of exploration data or such.

afraid of running out of fuel? just fit a fuel scoop and look for scoopable stars on your way, they give free fuel.

just take that mission, worst case you'll have to abandon it (which is equally irrelevant) and try another.

This right here proves your head is on straight.

Cobra was my first ship too. Spent the early days/weeks running courier missions and small cargo runs. Stack 'em both when applicable. Once I could afford the advanced discovery scanner (old-world issues) then added some bubble exploration to the mix.

Dabbled in bounty hunting, but didn't really start to do it right until a Vulture, having burned through an unengineered Eagle and Viper along the way.

@Ashnak oh be nice - nothing wrong with a bit of terror-hazing...! ;)

Well now that you have said it (and it got filtered out), and because I have the mind of an angel, I'm going to have to say:-

"Oh my, dear vicar, whatever are we going to do with the youth of today?"

Equally so, my schizophrenic alterego is going to propose "hand" as your answer.

I've had a really good think, but I can't work out the proverb "don't fly without rebuy" - it appears to be an essential wisdom, please elaborate.

Also... Ahhh bless you all. I'm going to do it guys! I'm really going to do it 😄

Thank you thank you

Rebuy - when (not if) your ship gets destroyed, you get essentially two options:
- rebuy your current ship (with all the modules you had on it) for 5% of its original value at the closest suitable starport
or
- get a free starter Sidewinder (and become teleported back to your starter system)

The catch is: you need (essentially) to have that money available, as cash in your account. There are a few options - you can skip rebuying some of the modules, or you can sell other ships if you have them, or you can apply for a bank loan - but essentially, you have to choose the second option if you can't pay. So the usual recommendation when buying a new ship is to have at least 3 times the amount of money for the basic hull - most of that to get at least a reasonable outfitting, the remainder for at least three rebuys. If you drop below three rebuys, mothball that ship and make some more money first. There was many a proud new Python pilot who thought they could make the insurance money back on the first trip...
