Hold me, tell me everything's going to be ok.

I've just stored the Sidewinder, and blew the majority of my hard earned Pilots Fed License starter mission credits on a Cobra MK3, now I'm starting to get bewildered.
I love this post. You know how refreshing it is to hear someone being overwhelmed because they upgraded from a Sidewinder to a Cobra? Most new players these days complain because they upgrade from a Sidewinder to an Anaconda the next day and forgot how to turn on the docking computer.

I think you'll be just fine :D

Hi team!

I played Elite on my C64 in the 90s, and loved it, I got Elite Dangerous about 2 years ago, had a go, got confused, stopped playing it.

Fast forward to now, I treated myself to VR two weeks ago - playing my only VR game Elite Dangerous was a no brainer... oh my sweet baby Jesus, what a feeling, blew my tiny egg shell mind.

I'm a happy commander.

Although I did screw up, and had to start again.

I'm on the verge of screwing up for a third time and need a pep talk, I need some salty sea dog to take me under her or his wing and tell me everythings going to be all... right.

I've just stored the Sidewinder, and blew the majority of my hard earned Pilots Fed License starter mission credits on a Cobra MK3, now I'm starting to get bewildered.

I'm looking at the missions and none of them seem feasible!?

I can "resource X commodity" - but looking on the galactic map, things are MILES away WHAT IF CAN'T REFULE ON THE WAY?!

Maybe I should fly to another station and find more humble mission - BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THAT, ALL THESE POINTS OF LIGHT LOOK THE SAME!?

I watched a video on mining, got all the kit, flew off to a ring planet (as advised), fired the Prospector into the ring, then for 4 minutes just watched a probe glow dimmer and smaller before being told it'd been destroyed.

...I just flew back to the nearest station and decided to sleep on it.

I'm reaching out to you brothers and sister, I really want to get into this game, I've had so much fun over the last 2 weeks, but I just worry I've got no focus and I'm going to start messing around and ruin everything.

HELP ME

Firstly, 🤗

It's OK. This stuff isn't obvious at all.
You need someone to do some hand holding and fly with you until you can do things confidently on your own!

My cmdr name is Susanna Saunders. Send me a friend request and I'll happily assist you in whatever way I can.

I'm here to help!

Make as many mistakes as you like... Nothing will happen
I think what GroG79 is trying to say is it doesn't matter if your ship gets blown to pieces and you have to start again. Most of us (including me) have been there and it contributes to learning ED. I'll never forget the time I got too close to a sun and burned up my ship. It's all part of the experience ;)

Honestly, I started both my Commanders with a good ol' bit of mining cash. Then moved on to being a space delivery man / cargo trader. I use EDDB to give me some good routes, or take a bunch of data missions that will take me to other systems and use EDDB to find out what I can fill my hold with at each station, before going to the next to hand in the data, sell the cargo then fill up again and head out to the next one.

The only real manual this game comes with is the rebuy screen.

It's normal to be confused early on, the game doesn't tell you much anything and there's a lot to learn.
Edited for accuracy.

Didn't read all the way through, so this was probably answered, but you fire prospector limpets at specific rocks (they have to be in a certain range), not at the ring itself. Took me a couple tries before I figured that out myself ;)

Edit: Oh, yeah - Everything's going to be all right! I too played Elite on a C64, and was ecstatic when I found this game.

@Mombasa - Welcome to Elite, but man oh man, are you green :) When you said:

I literally chortled!

What you are meant to do when mining is change the hud to exploration mode rather than the usual combat mode, and while still in supercruise, fire a Detailed Surface Scanner probe at the ring, not a prospector limpet this will highlight hotspots, you then target a hotspot and supercruise to it, where you will find better results with your prospector limpets and get more from your mining efforts. I've found this video by another one of us Jockistanis that shows you the process.

My advice is to just keep at it, you don't have a lot to lose at this point. It might be good to go back to your Sidey and leave the Cobra for when you've gotten your space legs. Experience is the best teacher.

Absolutely this.

Baby steps.

ED is incredibly daunting.

Most games have a glaringly obvious learning-curve.
You find a new toy and then the game gives you a "boss fight" which requires the new toy and teaches you how to use it.

ED doesn't really work like that.
Instead, it leaves all the toys lying around (available for purchase at various stations and via various unlocks) and then it's up to you to figure out which toys you like, and what they're useful for.

I'm not sure if the dev's had a plan for teaching players how to use various things but I'd suggest the best way is simply to keep doing stuff that's within your comfort-zone to accumulate credits and then also take on other interesting missions as well, see where you're struggling and then come back and ask about how to improve those things.

You DO NOT need to earn a billion credits and buy an A-rated Anaconda right now, or ever, to enjoy ED.
Take it from somebody with more than 9,000 hours in ED; the game is the same regardless of whether you're flying a Cobra or a Corvette.
You'll face the same challenges, the same opportunities and the same situations.

ED is a game that, really, you should just play to enjoy the idea of flying a spaceship around, doing stuff.
Do that and eventually you'll start to get ideas about things that you want to be better at.
Maybe you'll want to go exploring, maybe you'll want to be an outlaw, maybe you'll want to be a trader.
Once you start to think about stuff like that, then you can look for toys that'll help you achieve your goals.

My god Susanna thats a trippy profile pic. Love it !

By the way, I found this profile avatar after I saw another cmdr had a similar animated gif. He directed me to a website that had a load of these and I picked one that I liked! If it's something that you would like to know about I'll see if I can find the website again for you.
