Totally agree.
I'm sure, that all of us in some place, in some tome break any law (yes, insulting other people still could be crime).
Well, in some places, allegedly, just disagreeing with the wrong person will have death as a response...
So, in order to prevent global conflict on a scale never seen before, the game should be made single player - then no-one could possibly upset anyone else...

We just need 7bil Earths, 1 earth/1 person- no conflicts :D

The other thing I pick up on in these sorts of discussions is just how easy it is to be labelled a racist these days. Well I must be on a lucky 52 year streak then because I've never been accused of being a racist. (for context, I'm 52 years old)
Now then, are you sure that you are actually a 52 year old, and not misrepresenting yourself in the hope of gaining support by others in a similar age range?
I mean, we hear such terrible things about folk on t'internet these days...

the thing I tend to pick up on is how much people scream about the slippery slope of getting rid of people who only exist to cause problems

"b-b-b-but if you BAN people then you'll kill the playerbase!" without regard to the effect that keeping these people around has as people end up leaving so they don't have to deal with them
I've lost count of the number of places I've seen outright die or turn into complete hellholes because people are too scared of dropping the hammer on people no matter how many other people they drive out, or else cause to poke one head into the community, see what goes on, then go "nope" and leave, even places where the admins have come to me and mentioned how awful it is and how much they don't like it, and my advice has always been "well boot them out then"

"weh weh weh but if you ban someone then you're driving people out of the community" YES??? YES, THAT'S THE POINT?
You have a choice of keeping racists, or keeping the people who want to play a video game without having to deal with racist drivel clogging up the chat.

Also given the handwringing over this case the bar to actually get kicked out of ED is still pretty damn high and not something that people who aren't deliberately going out of their way to be donkeys are going to meet anyway

seriously I see players flying around with their commander names expressing their desire to hunt particular ethnic groups (though in..slightly more colourful terms that I'm surprised got past the filter) and squadrons named after the german national socialist party and the like all the time, whatever you get up to in game is unlikely to land the iron fist of braben upon your head

like the real takeaway from this story is "don't be so much of a jerk that you make the news" which is a pretty good piece of advice to take into all aspects of your daily life really

Hehehehe, today ban for being racist outside official channels, tomorrow ban on water and medical care for insults other people on twitter, as Sublime and galahad said.
You guys are really short-sighted, you support dangerous wicket )))
I should use more accurate words, but again- some people will see only it.

Indeed we are short sighted, we see Frontier taking action for in-game circumstances they do not wish to happen...

Then some (plural word I'm not allowed to use because flaming) comes along and gets all twisted about it and continues to reference out-of-game real-life stuff... I'll stay short-sighted if to be otherwise requires such contempt toward anything I disagree with, thanks (y)

Just shadow ban everyone, it would improve the game no end...
Slight OFFTOPIC ahead:
Interestingly, it was planned like that from the start, something something offline mode something... and then FDev smelled MMO money (see what I did there? :p)

If you realise that the 400 milliard systems (or billion in "freedom units") is basically generated on the fly system-by-system on your client when you jump, and each time you jump your machine does that "magic" of taking the star mass and actually calculating how the planets evolved overtime, you start to wonder what was stopping them from realising offline mode... As there is only one BGS server and it runs a script once a day (tick) for the entire galaxy and all of us, it isn't unfathomable that these calculations could be optimised and run locally to a degree. I'm not expecting X-series economy, but frankly our BGS isn't better if you ask me, and that other game is totally offline.

How does that affect your messaging though? Does it disable global chat? I've always wanted more fine tuned block tools where you separate out language from actions. I wonder if (with EDO imminent) FD are looking a bit more carefully at the MP interaction aspect.
