PVP newbie gets trounced in no time flat :-)

Video record your fights; it's the best way to learn pvp.
Submit them for analysis to experienced pros. They will be able to tell whether or not issues were due to lag or desync (shadow rams), or whether you were simply out maneuvered.

They can also recognize cheating.

Human players are much much more challenging and difficult compared to npcs. They are on entirely different levels.

A decently flown fdl should be able to blow up a vulture with ease.

I couldn't do that in good conscience because I may well have just been beaten fair and square.

So I'm just asking flat out, are you saying something fishy happened? Because you seem to make comments like this that cast doubt on the legitimacy of being defeated by the FDL pilot.

I know the Vulture is fun for killing pirates but when it comes to PVP yeah, I'm going to say you were beaten fair and square. The FDL in the right hands is just THAT good and you really should have considered things a bit more before you tried ganking him lol.

It's helpful post like yours that are the reason for my continued devotion to the forums. Thanks, man. :) XXX

Yeah well you see how your post comes off right? I don't PVP but in your situation I would at the very least assume my opponent is fully engineered as well. I think this came down to you just making a really bad decision. The FDL has a huge hardpoint, I think about 15 medium hardpoints maybe 16? Lost count. And like 20k more shields than your little Vulture does.

What were you thinking?

Next time record it and watch it back, sometimes things dont happen as quickly as you think or not in one go. I watched one back and took some Torps followed by Frags in about 2s but at the time to me it all happened in one go 3 shields and full hull to 55% hull....I still got away though ofc.

ill add Frags to the mix, theyd be harder to see only used up close and could just destroy you.

Could be a mixture, 1 L Beam and 4 Railguns or 4 Frags or even some Plasma.

Colour of beam can be modified in Livery, purple was a giveaway so good chance its this and not any insight can be gleaned.

both these builds have been borrowed from very helpful posters on the forums.

I aint got a good Vulture build but Id like one...hint hint :)

I dont do PVP so ignore everything I say if it makes no sense :)

P.S. FSD could be damaged and intermittently not working (just mash the Jump and hope it kicks in and be ready for it to cancel half way through), could have been sniped/damaged to 0% in which case it needs repairing (AFMS or in station), or could have been hit by a an FSD 'reset' weapon like the Grom Bomb which turns it off and back on again (so a wait of 10s or so before its working again.)

Btw, OP, it's awesome that you are up to PvPing.
Human vs Human flying is the most fun I have ever had in this game.
However, it's also very complex.
Below is the discord where most serious PvPers hang out, lawfuls and unlawfuls. You should join.

:)

Bit tricky to say, on the receiving end, and I don't necessarily mean "beam" as in beam lasers, but I could only be sure of a couple.
Chances are, you didn't see all of his weapons. There could have been rails in there, and a massive PA waiting for the right moment.

Post your Vulture build? That may give some insight.

It's kinda funny to see some of the comments. I think the Angus just wants to know if it was a legit kill or if the other player was likely cheating. The way some people have approached the OPs question is to instantly assume he's whining when he's not.

Bu instead of coming here to ask for guidance or a discussion on what he did wrong, he's made several statements where he's casting doubt on the legitimacy of his defeat. While maybe not "whining", it's a bit off-putting for him to have that attitude about this encounter. If his mind is already closed....

Also don't rule out a second (or more) players, unless you have already checked your history tab (another player in the same instance would have the same timestamp as the player who killed you). Just because you didn't notice and/or see them doesn't mean they weren't there.

So just report. It's FDEV's job to root out the cheaters - not the player's.

Sounds like he hit your fsd with a super pen imperial hammer. They are purple. He probably landed a salvo of 3 plasma shots, and maybe rammed you. That would knock out shields fast. Plasma FDL with hammers or rails is kind of the pvp meta these days. Counter it with thermal shock weapons since they tend to be pretty spicey builds.

Weapon colour isn't an indication of anything, as you can buy weapon colours in the store.
So, what was your build? Vulture can carry ~1000 MJ of shields. A full plasma FdL can deal ~600 MJ of damage per salvo. Replace two of those with Rails, and you lose ~50 MJ, but with SuperPenetrators will punch clean through your ship's innards.

If you haven't gone all-out (including engineering) on your Vulture's shields, then his first salvo could have knocked them down, second salvo a second later punches out your thrusters - and you're dead in the water. With full scale shield engineering, you'd last two salvoes.

I sort of agree with that line of thought but I really thought he was asking how he might improve his weapons to match them.
Yes that as well. With an experienced pilot and a meta build an FDL is a formable foe. Angus, if you have the Commanders name try friending him. Most pilots will try to help a lesser skilled pilot along. If not, and you're serious about PVP or would like to know more, try contacting a group, they will almost always have members who will love to help out. I doubt the guy was cheating, usually game hacks increase the accuracy of weapons and /or improve defenses. I'd say the guy had a good build and knew how to use it,

Given the fact that cheating outside of credit exploits is a very slow process (if it even happens) that you will never know the outcome one way or the other. Even in games that do a good job of dealing with cheaters you still had better know what is and isn't a good player and what is a cheat. It is well known that ED has hacks available and players do use them.

Threads like these just highlight the difference between PvP and PvE and the mistrust and anger that comes from cheating within online gaming generally.

I understand the OPs feeling of ‘can that really happen.’ When I was first blown up in Open it was a real eye opener just how quickly you go pop compared to PvE. There simply isn’t a comparison to be made, even before you take into account a PvP’ers potentially far greater skill and aggression level. Players vs npcs are worlds apart. Experiencing this for the first time is a genuine shock.

On the other hand, for PvP’ers, it’s understandable that cries of cheat will begin to grate very quickly.

OP - The suggestion to take a look at the Combat Initiative Discord is a good one. Meta builds are available widely across the internet but discovering the depth of knowledge, number crunching and understanding high level PvP’ers have will show a) just how much they know about how and what they can take down b) how little you need to know about the ship you fly in PvE to be successful but also c) how pointless a meta build is if you don’t understand it.

It sounds to me like you’ve got a good attitude towards the game, you’ve just been shocked at how tough players and their ships can be.*

* That’s not meant to sound as condescending as it may read:)
