ive been trying for months on and off to get this game to play.i cant.i end up spinning or crashing time after time.for even the simplest actions theres some ridiculous convoluted series of 30 buttons that have to be pushed in a perfect sequence to get the game to function.am i wrong or is this game just tedious

Sounds like flight sims aren't your thing, honestly. ED is pretty simple for a flight game, being borderline arcadey. People asking for more bindings is pretty common here. Maybe try an arcadey flight game like Rebel Galaxy Outlaw or Ace Combat? No snark meant, being genuine.

There are definitely tedious aspects to this game, but it's not in the control department by a long shot.

To fly without crashing requires very few button pushes at all. Just a joystick. If you're constantly spinning, it sounds to me like you might have accidentally turned Flight Assist off. If you did, you're flying according to Newton's Laws of Motion, and it is MUCH harder. Look at your Internal Panel (the one on the right) > Ship tab and make sure Flight Assist is turned ON.

It's probably best you attempt the training missions which might go some way to helping you figure out the game and how to fly your ship.

Hadn't considered OP may have FA off...

Not true, this isn't Evochron.

Which isn't true? That the flight model with FA adheres to Newton's Laws of Motion or that it's much harder? The former is objective fact; I suppose the latter is debatable, though I think most would agree that it's harder to fly FA off than on.

Lotsa people play this game fine with everything from keyboard, controllers to stick and throttle setups. And it's not that hard. It's possible you're somehow managed to turn flight assist off. Maybe a video would be useful.
If flight assist is off it will say so in red in the top right info bar.

In the right hand panel turn off pre flight checks

Flimley

Remap! Remap! Remap! The original bindings are pretty bad and you have to change them yourself to get any logical mapping for keyboard users. I use Q and E for roll (instead of mouse for it i think is default) W and S are throttle (which I think is default) A and D are thrust left and right. Shift is down and Space is Up. Pitch and Yaw all from the mouse. Then over time you develop little things to enchance your keybindings. So for example "Alt" is used as a secondary feature button. So for example "R" is default for engage fsd, but Alt + R is used for engaging just supercruise (useful for going into sc to get around a planet before a jump). I entirely used keybindings for most of the throttle control also. Z X and C are mapped (as they are next to each other on the keyboard) as 100% 0% and -100% Throttle respectively with the ALT functions of those being 75% 50% and 25% respectively, allowing for precise throttle control of the ship.

When in combat it is useful to remember to map things like shield cell banks/chaffs maybe close to WASD for ease of access (but thats just my preference). Silent running was a pain for me as it was mapped originally as "G" I think. I kept accidentally hitting it in combat causing my shields to drop and die. I later remapped this to some other random key on the other side of my keyboard as I rarely use it anyway. Shield Cell Bank was originally "F" because of its close proximity of WASD. Again I would keep accidentally hitting the key when in combat when I didnt need it, so Remapped it to Alt + F just to avoid this.

The key is to play around with it and when you notice mistakes, tweak your settings. I highly recommend mapping throttle controls like I did as it made flying so much easier. About to smack into a rock? Press X. Want to engage Supercruise Assist? Press Alt + Z. Need to turn quickly? Press Alt + X for maximum throttle mobility. Need to reverse back to avoid the rock that's about to blow up? Just press C.

Most important: You don't have to achieve anything in this game, just do whatever you want. Progress will happen automatically.

So best is, take a deep breath and push the first button, usually thruster "up" ;) . Then the next one ... and do it slow.
Sometimes you will get warnings like "leave the port or you will be destroyed" but even then you will have several minutes to get out, so no need to stress. Also the beginner ship is for free, no matter how often you crash it.

Everything else will come in time.

Great you've found the problem. FA off is a huge NO for beginners. And I don't agree with people declaring even the FA-ON flight model as easy. It becomes "easy" after tens of hours of flight, naturally, but most space games have a much simpler flight physics. That's why they seem like far too simple when I try them now.
