ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road to Odyssey - Mission Playthrough

Question to Devs please:

I thought the game elements of Odyssey looked great on the stream today - but FPS games usually make me nauseous.

Can I ask if the FPS will be similar to Horizon, where I believe being able to land and collect Mats is a big requirement for QoL (and thankfully I have no issue with this part of the game). Or will it be more like the missions you get at Stns where you don't 'need' to do a transport run, or you don't need to do a passenger transport job etc (and therefore you don't need to do the FPS part) .

I understand I am one player and I am stoked for all those players that will enjoy this element of the game - this is great for the community as a whole. I will probably still get Odyssey to support the game and in the hope (by some miracle) that it will not make me feel sick - but if it does make me ill and I can't play this mode, will my Elite experience be adversely affected?

Thank you <O

Sorry looks kinda meh in terms of the AI or lack of.
Yeah, but it's a prealpha. I don't expect anything on dedicated FPS level though, afterall a lot of people treat the FPS aspect of it like it's a plague :p

And of course i'm pretty sure that the initial "infiltration" part was "dramatised" for show (and that's ok), they could probably have been pretty safe running through the settlement to their objective without any care .

Looks good to me. A couple of questions:

Will there be a non-lethal method of subduing npcs?

Will crouch and prone positions be available?

Thanks.

Looking good FD! I know it's "pre-alpha" but it does look like additional polish is needed for shadows, movement animations and AI in particular. how would this mission pan out for a single player, which will be many persons that play?

With the HUD choice I thought basically the ship HUD would be kept/translated to on-foot. I think the new design shows that the old definitely needs updating and I'd like to see more harmony between ship and on-foot hud, like LAT/LONG planet locations for ships, ability to minimize some HUD elements and getting huge notifications out of the window area you need to view (like scooping and having huge "SCOOPED!" message appear which obscures the next item.

I'm excited to see ALL that odyssey has in store, and hope there are more hidden gems than just FPS game-play. Many QoL updates like happened in Beyond are still needed.

last request: Enable VR on foot- players can decide if it makes them sick or not, I see no reason not to do this unless the animations just die.

Greetings Commanders,

In anticipation of the exciting new gameplay features Commanders will first experience during the Alpha phase, we have released a new video showing an Odyssey mission playthrough, which features gameplay captured from a raid mission.

The video shows a team of three Commanders plunge into a daring on-foot raid of a military outpost. Their objective: to disable the power centre and ultimately render the opposing faction powerless!

All three Commanders in the incursion team are specially equipped for their assigned role, selected from the wide range of space suits, weapons and equipment available in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. Their tactical gear grants them an edge in their assigned tasks, whether it is to infiltrate the base avoiding detection, lay down covering fire if the alarm is raised, hacking, or quickly extract their teammates from a tight spot if enemy forces overwhelm them.

And in case you missed it in the video we are also excited to announce that the Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Alpha will be available for PC from 29 March!

Stay tuned for more Elite Dangerous: Odyssey news soon!

Well you can tell its Alpha it explains why VR is not present as with the cockpits now, as a lot of work is needed. Little things I saw or didn't see no AI, in some cases feet aren't making contact with the ground the way they should almost giving an ice-skating appearance which makes the movement animation even more rough. Please give options to disable health bars, some like them, some don't so please give the option. Ragdoll needs work, again its Alpha to be expected.

Like some have said put in some type of working animated ladder or ramp something or anything that makes the magic light below the ship more then just a teleport into the cockpit. At least the way its done with the scarab where you see yourself lifting up into the ship before going black and reappearing in your cockpit, but again its Alpha but please make it more then what we saw.

Not a deal breaker and I know its Alpha, but make it so we leave foot prints even if they fade over time, we cant leave a mark on a new planet we set foot on when our feet don't leave a mark. Like the first footprint on the moon as with Neil Armstrong, we need that feeling. Yes they will have to fade away as you cant have foot prints stored all over the galaxy, but try to let prints near us last a couple minutes while we're on planet, distant tracks can just fade as we move away from them.

These are just a few things I thought I'd voice among many more things I'm sure the sharp eyed community will bring up.

How many people can one ship take on a missions? I'm guessing 1 per CMDR seat in the cockpit.
However what about the Federal Dropship? Can we use this as an actual Dropship and take a platoon of say 10 CMDRS or whatever.
Thanks.

Can someone post the link of the original video. I'm on firefox and can't see any video on the original post

P.S. someone did! Thanks!

so "infiltrating" and empty, absolutely lifeless settlement, with watch drones flying over your head apparently oblivious of your presence

There were both sec forces and civilians walking around the settlement in and out of buildings. As far as I understood the "infiltrators" were actually clean and the settlement had "open doors", i.e. no reason for skimmers or sec forces to shoot on sight or raise alarms unless they did something illegal, which they eventually did.

Overall animations, chunkiness, combat feels very bad tbh. Jaggies + effects like dust are quite poor - looks like a game from 2010. We'll see how it plays out. If it's going to be a pool of 5 missions (destroy generator) etc. - it will become really boring real fast. We'll see what variety it brings, but as of now I have quite a low hopes. More than anything I wanted ship interiors but I know these are not coming.

We'll see when it goes out, but for now it looks extremely underwhelming. A lot of fanboys wouldn't agree but this feels way old in 2021.

An interesting watch on Twitch... looking fun with the usual FDEV attention to detail. This footage reminds me of Payday2 heists, but set on a rock.

'Necessary' murders never sit right just because you need a bit of kit or XP. Hopefully, for those of us with patience and tenacity "full stealth" will be an option by release?

Pre alpha. Early build. They have said it many times.
