ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road to Odyssey - Mission Playthrough

Only thing I note is the AI looks doesn't look to challenging until larger reinforcements arrive.

It's been noted that these are level one NPC's only (there's a 1 on the right hand side of your in zoom gunsight) and higher tier NPCs are expected. Don't know how much that will affect actual intelligence (as opposed to skill level) but I doubt it will be a static thing. Ship NPC's have changed a lot over time with new maneuvers added and can imagine the same thing happening here depending how it plays. (Hope they're not TOO good though. Imagine 100 skilled snipers hidden on the roof, presenting no target at all for you to fire back at! You'd be 100% brown bread.)

It looks better than I thought. The combat is a bit stiff. The AI and anti-aliasing needs an upgrade. Kudos for making the HUD blue-green colored (not orange). I hope there's sufficient variety. With some tweaking and polishing it could be great.

Personally I can't wait but reading all the replies does make me wonder if some of the posters understand what pre alpha, the footage they viewed, actually is? of course it looks unfinished, unpolished and lacking...... it's a test version it aint meant to look finished. Roll on release say I

Yes. I am aware of that. Ok. Let me try this way.

Where in OPEN or PG a couple of mates could do a mission, in SOLO would I be assigned an NPC team mate? If not, is that mission, in fact, available in SOLO?

I'm not sure we've seen anything to suggest yet you can build an NPC team. Can imagine a combat zone, where you have other soldiers on your side. In space they do coordinate with each other on a level, but not necessarily following your lead.

It’s not a sarcastic question, I am wondering, have the actually made an OPEN only combat part of the game. If not, if some of the missions can be done by a SOLO player, how engaging is that going to be for a team in OPEN or PG?

I think you mean multiplayer only. I guess we don't know. I doubt there will be NPC teammates implemented.

If that mission can be done by a lone player. I wondered that too. If there was some other way to complete it or if you have to pick other mission types.

There has never been any indication that any mission, or feature of the game (aside from the obvious wingplay/multicrew) cannot be accessed from any Mode. In fact, that might be more difficult than some might think - the modes are not separate builds or servers, they are just instance filters on the same game/universe. So there is no reason whatsoever to expect that any mission might not be available in any mode. They will no doubt be harder if attempted alone, but then so are High CZs, Pirate Threat 7, NHSS lvl 7, etc. - but also doable. I saw nothing in that mission that I don't think I couldn't have done solo with nothing but a laser pistol...

I get the feeling you'll have to go stealthier if solo. Could be the same mission but if you're in a "wing" (platoon) then fighting your way in and out would likely be the quicker, less subtle way to complete it and ping the BGS. If you're alone, the livestream spoke about a control room where you can disable the alarm systems. Ideal thing maybe a way to scramble the NPC's comms so if one patrol scans you they can't alert the rest of the base. (It's a lot of guesswork, I've no idea, but I did like the picture of how NPC alert levels mushroom out rather than being a hive mentality)

Well, ok, multiplayer only. I guess I’m just used to calling that OPEN. So far in this game, everything is available in all modes. This might be a break from that.

My next point was....I know us console donkeys have to wait for this, but if a fair bit of the game is multiplayer only, then, people like me, would have to pay a subscription to access it.

I don't think so, you'll be able to play it. The team in the video was a regular wing.

edit: Probably won't be cross platform though.

My guess is this mission will be available in all modes, probably harder to complete as a single player or need full stealth with mechanics that Winterwalker mentions.

Yes, console players will have to pay their Sony/Xbox subs if they want to play in Open, but I do expect many/most Cmdrs will find success in a good type of missions if they do them solo. As already mentioned, the AI in the play through were pretty easy (deserved of their lvl 0-1 status), so there should be plenty of combat type missions to play in Solo, and we've already been informed that there are far more than just combat missions.

Thanks. I was aware there would be other-than-combat missions. I just wondered how they might do these :)

That is really what I’m getting at.

I think you'll be fine (too). The demo did show how useful a get away driver will be but maybe you can use your SRV to get in and out instead ... who knows :)

Seemed like a scarily long walk to get out the ship though. I've a feeling we'll be getting what skydivers call really serious ground rush. It didn't look a long way to the base from the ship .. but especially on low power and under fire, that perspective might be about to shift!

(edited out cheap antagonism)

Based on a cursory glace at modern game PR, more specifically the history of recent space games like NMS and Elite itself, I'd say you're just flirting with naivety to assume a significant level of improvement as regards the basic mechanics between now and release. This wouldn't be the first time someone has said "give it time it's only an alpha!" and ended up being disappointed. I'm sure everyone sincerely hopes you're right and good luck to Frontier getting it polished up for release, genuinely, I mean that in a non-jerky way.

I do appreciate Frontier moving away from their old approach of showing flashy CGI trailers that bear no relation to the game beyond colour palette, but this is still a staged demo they will have made a not-inconsiderable effort to make look cool. In some ways it does look good, but in terms of gunplay and AI it is pretty wobbly to say the least and no amount of enthusiastic larping about ridges and such can cover that up.

Have to see how it plays .. for players of all skill levels.

Looking like tier 1 NPC's in this demo, you can check out my join date, there have been times since release when ship NPC's were buffed all the way up but it's not necessarily as fun as it sounds if the avergae player can't get out the door.

Just because NPC's aren't boss level every time doesn't mean they couldn't be but - given some tweaking at introduction - they will end up pitched at a median level for reasons of accessibility. Hardcore will still be PvP.
