Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

No, because Odyssey is not an FPS game, it's an expansion to a large, already-existing game, which is much, much more than "just an FPS". FPS gamers also don't compare FPS games with Fallout's DLCs.

It does have FPS gameplay, and that gameplay will be compared to other games with FPS gameplay.

Try playing the trilogy again from start, especially the first 2 games, and see how clunky and unresponsive the combat is... ;)

Mass Effect has better animations, abilities, character design, aesthetics, weapons, a cover system, than what they showed in this trailer.

And so what?

ED's own players craptalk the game all the time (just look at this depressing forum), and it still sold very well.

Do you actually believe some Doom player is going to buy ED expecting the shooting gameplay and combat mechanics to be as good as in Doom Eternal? Of course not.

In fact I doubt anyone is going to purchase and judge ED based only on on-foot action alone. Games with subpar gunplay like the Fallout series, Mass Effect and others sold millions of copies, the Fallout series sold even more than most first class FPS games out there, not because it had the best shooting mechanics surely, but because the sum of their parts is a lot better than if you just look at specific bits under a microscope.

Did you ever seen someone purchase GTA5 and then moaning than the airplane flying is so much worse than MS Flight Simulator, or that the car physics are so much worse than Assetto Corsa, or the ballistics are so less detailed than Sniper 3? And yet, GTA5 is one of the top sellers in gaming history, even though it's not the best at anything in particular.

ED is also not the best flying combat game, certainly not the best flight sim, nor the best trading game, not the best buggy driving game, and not the best exploration game. But the sum of it's parts results in a fantastic, unique game. Expanding it with on foot gameplay will turn it even more unique and special, make it's universe much richer, alive. It doesn't have to be the best fps game in the market not by a longshot to be successful.
Again: why do you keep talking about ED as a whole? We are NOT evaluating Elite Dangerous but it's DLC - Odyssey, which costs and feels like a stand-alone game (you can play without having a ship whatsoever, mind you). That's one. Two: people never asked for a FPS. People wanted space legs so they can walk in and outside their ships. So again: who are the target customers? ED players? They never wanted FPS. Sure, they will probably make a mission or two, but after that they'll just play as usual: fly their ships and explore the planets (this time on foot too, as an alternative to SRV). New players, particulary FPS fans? If they are the target, Odyssey would have to be ON PAR WITH ANY MODERN FPS. Because those players DO NOT HAVE ANY nostalgia towards Elite as a brand, it's lore and stuff. If they buy it for it's FPS aspect, they WILL be royally pi*sed unless they get a game that is comparable to modern FPS games. Sure, some might just fall in love with classic Elite gaming experience (flying in a space ship), but most won't and even those who will stay - probably will keep playing CoD (for example) if they want to shoot people.

Hunter: Call of the Wild has FPS gameplay, and somehow I doubt Arma 3 players compare the 2 games and buy one expecting to be the same as the other.

Mass Effect has more depth, variety, better animations, better character design, cooler weapons etc than what they showed in this trailer.

Mass Effect is also a multi-hundred hour action-rpg trilogy, while the trailer is just a trailer.

Seconded. There will be a whole new influx of players.

Mass Effect is a truly triple A franchise (except Andromeda) with lots more fans. Can't say the same for Elite unfortunately. The trailer shows a lot of potential, but the gameplay is subpar, clunky. Staunch defenders of Frontier say: it's just a trailer, they got enough time to fix it. We'll see about that.

True, especially the first one is really clunky. Though the games are also over a decade old...

I do love the Mass Effect trilogy, it has a permanent place in my vault of fond memories, but it's not certainly for the action parts of the first 2. But then again, I never expected an action-rpg game to have top-notch shooting mechanics so I judged it on it's own merits.

You're going to hate me for saying this again but Odyssey 1.0 is exactly that, a 1.0 build.

What version is Mass Effect on by now?

No it is not an mmo
Oh, good 🥳
That means we can start comparing Odyssey to all those other single-player games that have FPS action and saying it doesn't compare to, then...

I guees even the HL2DM players (which is online multiplayer as well!) will be throwing their hands up in the air in disgust... Along with the HL / HL2 players, Quake 4... The SP list goes on & on...

Yep. It's also about to release ver.5, it's not an expansion into an entirely brand new environment, aka a ver.1 game.

It's a lot to expect a ver.1 to match ver.5 for details, I think, so surely what we're realistically looking for is playable and fun, with the potential for improvement into ver.2.?

I think its adorable people are running over each other to claim its DOA or it doesn’t compare well to other FPS titles.

I’d bodes well for future forum lolz because I dunno about you but I was getting bored of the Elite v Eve/NMS/SC. Can’t wait for Elite V CoD/ME threads.

Looked like one of them used a jetpack boosted jump when running towards the gate towards the end.... I might be wrong though.

Yeah. Unclear. And not mentioned either in commentary. 0.5 gravity on the planet I think it was? A big jump anyway.
(Looking forward to weighing under 10 stone again, it's been a while. No high G planets for this space cowboy!)
