Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

For SC : 45$ to buy the future game and test the alpha, nothing more.
Ah... good old Schrodinger's Star Citizen!

It's playable now!

No, it's a testing environment!

I've been playing games for nearly 45 years now, and MMOs for over 30. Many of them were released games. Some of them were early access. Some of them included public Alpha and Beta tests. None of them put the stuff that needed to be tested behind the type of "pay or grind" wall the way Star Citizen has. None of them have neglected core functionality in favor of monetization the way Star Citizen has. None of them have neglected major game loops in favor of monetization the way Star Citizen has.

I Kickstarted this project, the same way I did about half a dozen other games, and this is the only game where I demanded my money back. The only one. It is the only Kickstarter Project I've ever participated in that so utterly failed in its promises, and somehow enriched the one making the promises, rather than financially ruining them in an effort to make good. The other games either succeeded beautifully, or at least made good on their core promises, before going under financially. None of them came back to me begging for more money the way Star Citizen keeps doing with its backers.

I am not giving that charlatan a penny, especially since I consider myself lucky that I got my money back at all. Any other game developer would've made something fantastic with nearly half a billion dollars to work with.

Pay for $45 to "test" the false front for a confidence scam?

Please, don't make me laugh.

I think that's the key to the general perception of SC as a scam. Even Duke Nukem Forever was never taken into such consideration as it was just development hell typical of many other failed projects and in the end someone made something out of that title... it was not good, but that's it. The problem with SC is CiG are taking backers money to fund their own development hell, and are asking for even more money now that their promised product was a no-show for 7 years now. Feelings wont be the same when CiG go bankrupt or their decide to "release" whatever is being labelled as "alpha" by cultists right now, or both.

I think the tragi-comedy is that that could all happen, but still also be many years off. It’s quite possible that the Calders cash will see them soldier on for another 3 / 4 years, but still leave them with a broken toy box at the end (after a continued stint of being tortured by Chris’s fair hand).

It’s a proper space opera this one ;)

There are at least 5 threads about Odyssey on Spectrum in the other games section.

Lots of positive comments.

Then there is this fairy dust...

What struck me about the OP's post is when they said:
SC isn't faking things
Are they talking about the game that has a scaled solar system, scaled planets, where the planets are fixed in space and don't move (just rotate)? In that specific aspect, SC isn't any better than NMS.

The fact that in Elite, as a space game, that Frontier have worked to make space right is the number 1 thing I like about Elite. Every time I play NMS I like wandering around the planet surface repairing my ship, but the moment I climb into the ship and start flying in that sorry excuse for 'space', I stop playing and return to Elite. SC is sort of half-way between NMS and Elite. It's not as bad as NMS, but I always get that 'icky' feeling in SC when I'm flying about. All the surface stuff is fine.

Unfortunately we know the faithful have CIG approved responses to this.

"They had to build a company from scratch!"
"Never been done before!"
"The vision!"
"Unprecedented fidelity!"
"Its a chance to have a game like no other, without publishers making it bad!"

In their heads they see nothing wrong with how CR is managing the project. Everything is ok. One day SC will be the BDSSE. All they need is faith in Chris and he will deliver unto them the dream game.

Yeah, the CIG not faking things is another of the Church of Chris approved lines.

What do they even mean? If, as you note, they are going for maximum realism, then that's already out of the window with their unrealistic planets.

Joking aside now...the 3.13.0 patch has now been dumped on to wave 1 PTU. A whole 11Gb of bugs all in one patch :)

Patch notes ...read it and weep

ITS ALPHA! :D

Got to love this.

  • Ship to Ship Docking v1
Adding the ability to for the Merlin snub ship to dock and undock within the Constellation, along with guidance mode UI to ensure correct alignment during the docking process. Players will be able to use the autoland system and manual flight to dock. To take off from the constellation, press the landing gear keybind (default N). To start the docking process, target the Constellation then hit the landing gear keybind (default N) to initiate the docking UI. You can do the same to dock with another player's Connie but you will need to request permission to dock and have that player approve it after initiating the docking UI with their ship.

Love how they call allowing a SLF to dock "ship to ship docking version 1"

Ship to ship docking was meant to be any ships docking with each other via docking collars. It was meant to support boarding actions or just meeting up easily without having to go for a space walk. But never fear citizens, this is just version 1, tier 0, the stuff that you are really excited for is coming later.

I hope you did not miss Xenothreat event, It was the most epic moment of Star Citizen since the launch of that project in 2012.

The most epic moment in the history of the project was people sitting there shooting at a big fat target that wallowed around.

If the bar for excellence gets any lower they will fall off the bottom of the Earth.

There is ship to station docking also in the v1 that has mechanisms similar to ship to ship docking as you describe it.
