"As the disastrous SimCity launch lurches toward the end of the week, it feels like it's been one catastrophe after another.

Earlier this morning, EA started disabling features to get the game to work. And in the latest hit against SimCity, megaretailer Amazon.com has stopped selling digital copies of the game."

There's something beautiful about a trainwreck, especially when it happens to a giant corporation ****ing their customers about with DRM nonsense. Hopefully publishers everywhere will sit up and take notice of this!

I refuse to by anymore EA games as a matter of principle. F:mad: them and their always on DRM.

and dont get me started on their day1 DLC,

DRM a wonderfull way to punish paying customers.

The number of times Ive went to the pirates to fix issues Ive had with games Ive bought legally . As far as Im concerned even disk in drive DRM is a step too far.

I've also boycotted EA for several years now and have not succumbed to installing the Origin crap onto my computer. Steam I can tolerate, but Origin goes a bit too far.

was totally against the idea of steam when it was first released with Half life 2, but now thanks to steam selling their games at really stupid cheap prices during their sales, i now have over 400 games on the platform,:D

even gamestops/ platform is way better than Origin,

A team of developers is looking to make a single-player city-building game that seems like the anti-SimCity—and they're asking for $250,000 on Kickstarter to make it happen.

Called Civitas, the project promises to be a SimCity clone that you can actually play offline, which might come as welcome news to fans burned by the recent launch disaster.

As the folks behind Civitas write:

Out of all of the possible types of games our fledgling studio could pick as our first project, why did we pick a city simulation title as our first effort?

Easy, it was out of a combination of how much we loved some of the original city simulation games back in the early PC days and our displeasure with the direction the new SimCity has taken under the iron fist of EA. We don't agree with the removal of single player, the lack of terraforming, lack of modding, and above all them forcing the worst form of draconian DRM on its players known as the "Always On-line" requirement. They are seriously not going to let you play their game if you aren't online. Anyone that has ever been forced to play under that DRM knows how terrible it is. Not only can your internet access stop you from playing, if EA is having any server issues (Yeah those never happen right?) you'll get a nice fat error message instead of your game starting. Forget playing while traveling or anything. This is not a good recipe for a simulation game. EA should really just rename it SimFarmVille and get it over with.

Ouch! Go check out the Kickstarter if you're interested in hearing more about the potential game and its plans.

It's quite impressive that the launch is more messed up than the Diablo 3 launch. I've played and enjoyed Sim City and its sequels since the original on the Amiga and it's rather sad what has happened. I'd be playing it right now if it wasn't for the so called DRM.

i first played simcity by hacking my brothers ibm and loading it in dos, i cant for the life of me see how EA could mess it up so badly, its a crying shame.

I can its called always on DRM, EA think that by making sure that the game cant be played unless its on their servers they will stop pirating, the thing is had they not gone down the DRM route their sales for simcity would probably be double, give it another 5 to 10 years and EA will be no more as each year they appear to p155 of more and more users.

Why EA Won The "Worst Company In America" Award

Erm... you could make a similar post about any big business...

I could but EA is the probably the only one that has destroyed all the decent developers.

not sure you are aware but EA tried to buy out the Steam platform, can you just imagine were we would be now if Valve had let them do that.

I'm actually VERY disappointed with the "always online" DRM in SimCity.

I still have the original SimCity for PC box on my shelf. I love the game and played it a lot. Under different circumstances I would have pre-ordered the new game, but since a lot of the time I have to play games is when I travel, be it on the train, at the airport or even on the plane, I was quite concerned about the multi player focus. Obviously, sine I play games on the go, an internet connection is not given, so the way it has turned out has made the game more or less useless for me. They lost a customer, not that I think they care or that it matters though.

I would accept (if I have to) online DRM validation of my game once a month or even once a week, but always online just doesn't work for me.

I wouldnt even go that far, how pc games used to validate a game with a simple CD Key was fine, it allowed you to play single player but you had to buy the full game to play online, yes i am aware that there are plenty of NOCD exe's but for me personally it was always worth having the full game.

Oh I agree Mobius. They treat people like potential criminals, and I don'tlike that at all. I said I would accept online validation, but I don't like it.
If you look at it from the publishers point of view though, a one off validation (CD key) is more or less worthless as copy protection these days. It will be cracked within days, if not hours, of release. So I'm reluctantly willing to accept monthly or even weekly validation. What I want is a totally different thing though. In my view, copy protection is a lost battle, they gaming industry needs to look at this from a totally different angle.

You make it sound like it would've been different if another publisher had bought them instead.

We'd be in exactly the same place. Either EA would have imposed a draconian DRM scheme forcing users to a different service that would gain popularity in its stead, or they'd leave the scheme as it is and it'd be no different either.

I think we can all agree that EA's current DRM is pretty much Obsolete.
i think 80% of the people that would have copied the game wouldnt have brought brought the full game if it was any good,

its like music. many people have hundreds of gigs of music, but would they have brought the albums in the first place. the same goes for games those who would have copied it would probably end up buying it, if the game was any good,

*looks at stack of games currently being used as a bedside table* Erm... am I doing this right or wrong? My morals and job as a developer say "right", but my brain and my bank balance say "wrong"... :D
