ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey Update 2021

Why can't you play horizon tho. What is stopping you odyssey and base Ed are 2 different installs btw so
Because i bought Odyssey on Frontier store and not on Steam. So Steam doesn't make the update correctly and the launcher claim to make an update on Steam.

So I just did the uninstall of Elite Dangerous and likely never to return. I read through all the posts since my last one and there are many with blinders on. I have no issue with $40 US....I have the money. I am simply going to post the following to get this off my stupid female brain and put closure on this for me. :D:p

My computer is: Win10, Ryzen 3600X, 16GB RAM, x570 MB, RTX 3070 v460.79 drivers, SSD only, LAN Connected with a TP-Link really nice router. I have zero issues running Odyssey smoothly but there are very noticeable issues in game. This is a fairly high end computer but also is my workstation at home.

What I do have issue with is that Alpha ended a couple weeks prior to release and it is public knowledge that....
A - FDev confirmed that they were working on a different/later build than what alpha release(s) were using.
B - No Beta. Just straight to Full Release.
C - Likely the above has to do with FDEV fiscal quarter and showing large % gains by players buying into the DLC based upon public knowledge that the dev builds were ahead of the alpha testers. This means/suggests they 'Internally Tested/Played' what was in the alpha but also fixed things in later non-public builds. Marketing/Media giving the good (y)(y) for a viable release.

A & B above I can understand. FDEV must pay salaries and must show a +% in their bottom line that covers the -% in other parts of the year to have a NET +% for the company to survive. Business 101....I studied it at uni. :sneaky: I am a Systems Engineer by profession following in my dad's shadow. I understand how business works. I also 'Get It' game development is not easy. FDEV is explicitly in the business of making software video games and should hire/know their business profession.

It is C above that I (and many others) have an issue with. I posted elsewhere that did anyone at FDEV actually press play and say to themselves....yeah this is ready or maybe this is really close and players (our customers) will understand us fixing these few issues. If they did then we should be furious. If they didn't and just said....F-it we HAVE to release and deal with the blow-back because of needing to pay bills/salaries our customers will just have to 'suck it up and deal with it'. We should be furious. Clearly the % was chosen here over customer satisfaction. This is the really irritating part.

I decently like Elite Dangerous: Horizons and now I have 504hrs in game. I did end up doing a reinstall and restored most of my Horizons but had to redo the Holo-Me in Horizons because even though I had NOT overwritten my Horizons custom commander Odyssey simply converted and ruined it anyway. Looks like one needs to back up the entire AppData Frontier Developments folder so that FDev and the Odyssey shenanigans don't ruin the Horizons (previous settings). Just another bug....or maybe why WOULD anyone want to return to Horizons when Odyssey is the 'Fresh and New'? Sarcasm but really....I wanted Odyssey to be my next step (pun intended) in Elite Dangerous. There are a 3 items that I want/need to do yet.....Fleet Carrier named Argos being one of them. (y):sneaky:

So after having to redo the Holo-Me and closing out the last couple missions I took while testing Odyssey (non-Odyssey missions) and doing my Empire Garrison duties....I logged off at my home system and decided to give Star Citizen a try. $65 and 6 hours later I
  • installed, logged in,
  • got out of bed in an apartment hab
  • went cloth shopping :sneaky:(y)
  • ate a chili dog (y)
  • drank something yummy called Fizz
  • bought several nice undersuits and armor pieces (one with a back pack)
  • WALKED in 3rd person to a tram
  • then to my Hangar which sits a lovely blue and gold Avenger Titan
  • opened the rear cargo door and walked aboard....closed it
  • Toured the ship and sat in the comfy pilot's seat with huge googly what eyes (same happened in EDH):ROFLMAO:
  • Managed to call/hail the terminal to launch. Ran out of time and landed again. I was only 8m off the the ground. :ROFLMAO: I only hit the wall ONCE! :ROFLMAO:
  • Got out....went back to the observation terminal.....no fines....no security....whew....all good. :ROFLMAO: Recalled the ship....hmm....SAME hangar! Returned! :ROFLMAO:
  • Was able to get out of the hangar and into air. Hovering there with a restricted area close warning with no idea where no to go.
  • Saw another ship and followed a similar path into space. Now what? 🤣 Right....FSD.....nope....QUANTUM DRIVE! 😇😙🤪 Where to? Lyria looks close so off I went.
  • Cruised the surface for awhile and noticed the sun was setting. Found a flat spot to land and did so without crashing. (y)(y):giggle:
  • Equipped one of my lovely undersuits and helmet. Made sure I was topped off on hydration and food....good to go! Opened the cargo door and went for a hike.
  • I watched the Stanton Star set on the horizon....was lovely....and slept in my ship bed where I logged off for the night.
This is EXACTLY the experience I wanted in Odyssey. I already know how to fly in EDH and I do actually land manually on planets. EDO needed to let me get out of my chair and walk out. Just walk around the pilot's area (bridge) and drink and eat something. I don't need to see the cargo in my ship in EDO. Just let me get out of my chair and walk down to the planet to go for a hike or go for a hike in a station....which we can do mostly but it does not FEEL like a place we are part of. We are just a visitor in an empty shell of terminals and mission giver NPCs. It is specifically the execution of EDO (and EDH) that....for myself....simply feels empty. My Star Citizen experience has a layer of immersion that makes my character feel like she (me) belongs there. EDO never gave me that feeling. From teleporting from chair to blue cylinder to buttons and interface not having the same feeling at station and ship. Missing buttons from the station interface. New shaders are sometimes really nice but usually they are simply poor execution. Star Citizen 3.13 is Alpha (and constant statement of Pledge not Purchase) but gave me so much that I continually wished for in EDH/O and I had zero issues playing SC in it's current state. Now that I know.....I think I will deal with the SC Alpha and likely to Pledge $60 for an Origin 300i for my next ship. Which COULD have gone into FDEV ARX pockets for vanity items in EDO.

So FDEV has my EDH & EDO money but has completely lost my future money....forever. I am just one person but I have gotten this off my brain and done my part of not standing by taking behavior issues by a company selling Fruit Preserves but opening the jar reveals just Flavored Jelly.

O7 peeps! Good luck with EDH/O
Commander Brighid, Imperial Duchess

Here is me going for a hike on Lyria :sneaky:(y)(y)

It's a "full release" therefore it is a finished product. We all knew that many of the content might not be availed at launch, but it it's current state; this is not a full release therefor not a finished product.
Well according to some, the fact that some things would not be available at launch has come as a complete surprise. At least a few people have now acknowledged that a perfect launch was not expected.

If you bought a new car; would you consider it normal that the manufacturer would ask you to report to him the defects of the car? No, you would expect a working car; not one with square wheels... This is clearly an open beta and wasn't marketed as such. It was marketed as a full release. Seems fanboy in denial of reality getting screwed over by corporation had to become the norm.

 Ummm, yes, I would consider the manufacturer to expect me to report to him any defects. Did you really want to ask that question?

Absolutely I would expect a working car, but I know with the millions of cars that come off the line, there can be issues. In fact there are plenty of reports of recalls of many things that have been released as full release.

I have seen someone else on the forums state they requested a refund, if you are so disgusted with the company and what has happened maybe you should consider this (maybe you have already done so?).

As for the fanboy part - guilty as charged; love the game. Sorry if that part was meant to garner a different reaction.

As for being in denial, no, not at all. I have an upgraded graphical experience better than I had before, I've been using my space legs and enjoying the experience. I recognise there are issues and with some, they are experiencing worse issues than me. So what exactly am I denying?

All I am stating is that for me, the problems are not bad, I enjoy the game and await those things that there are issues with to be rectified. For me this is not an issue that I feel needs a Game of Thrones 'Shame' moment, or the flogging in the streets of those involved (I apologise for the artistic license there :)).

In fact the most disturbing element I've found with this situation, is the fact that I have explained why I feel the way I do, I have acknowledged that issues are present with Odyssey and that I understand that some have it worse than me, and even though I may not understand the full extent of their frustration - I do commiserate and understand their right to vent. Yet some of them seem unable to accept why I feel the way I do. <O

Dude !! We're talking about bugs reported over 2 months ago by hundreds of players. We are talking about unfinished core components. We are not talking about bugs discovered at the last minute missed by the testing process. Most of the bugs reported in the release are know bugs. They were fully aware of the state of the expansion. Even players were aware that it would not be wise to release so soon.
And as stated, as some bugs are addressed, others may occur - others that may need you to accept the original issues for a longer period of time.

Again, personally I have no issues with them releasing it when they have, because I am enjoying it. But again I know some are not; I hope that you and they will soon be in a position to be happy. <O

Question of a point of view. From my perspective, i can't even play Horizon, so it's a tough downgrade.
Not really. He stated 'Odyssey DLC has not provided working upgrades to the original game'.

I have upgrades to my Original/Horizons game since installing Odyssey and they work. So he was incorrect.

Had he said some of the upgrades Odyssey have provided do not work - then I would have agreed, as I have not denied this since engaging in conversation. <O

Incorrect, because I am playing a working upgrade.
You're not. If you bought a red car and it broke down every six miles, would you consider that acceptable? No doubt you'd argue it is, because it's 'red' as advertised.
Yet I have been playing it.
I too have had issues with my Pioneer skin, so I just didn't bother myself with it. I'm sure it will get sorted.
That appears to be your answer to everything.

I'm not denying that FDev won't sort all of this out. What I am saying is that they released this too early and it is not a stable piece of software. You admit you're not a programmer, well I am, and the level of QA is so low, that I would be embarrassed to release something so buggy (and I've released my fair share of bugs over the years).

As I said, if this was clearly marked as an alpha, even beta (although it's frankly not even at that level) it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But it was not, it was billed officially as a full release.
If content now doesn't matter, then why are you complaining? And if you don't care about future content....I'm really not sure what your issue is about?
Haven't you been paying attention? Other than graphical and server performance issues, the whole thing is a buggy mess that requires frequent logouts, because various mechanics of the game are not working. You begin to see these bugs within minutes of playing, betraying the fact that little or no QA was done prior to release. Or do you believe that having to restart your game client thirty times a session is part of the 'immersion'?

I know this isn't going to get through to you, because you appear to have an almost religious need to act as an apologist for FDev in this, I'm just waiting for you to tell us how it's somehow our fault the game is crashing.

Authentication Error so cannot play at all (ticket raised) and now lost all my downloadable products.

stop applying your definitions to my posts simply so you can remove them
my posts are directed at frontier
anyone interpreting them as an attack on anyone else is obviously not actually reading and comprehending.
I keep saying it

ban me

its the only way you are going to stop me

it is CRYSTAL CLEAR that my game is gone and I will never be playing it ever again
its been gone for 4 days now

and instead of it being put back or put in any way that makes it playable...I come in here to keep pointing out that its still broken
and that it doesnt matter any more
4 days is a lot of damage to the BGS in the Area that I once called my home in the stars.

literally hundreds of cmdrs daily fighting to take my systems and frontier has given them all the ability to destroy me because I cant play a broken game.

all those carriers in the system around the Nova CG
what do you think they are doing to my systems????????
they have been actively attacking all that is mine since the cg started

and YOU have removed me from the game so I cannot defend

and you try to remove me from the forums so no one can see what frontier is doing to 8 years of BGS that 1 cmdr did.

you tell me not to do this, not to do that...

I have been left only 1 tool to communicate with.

take it too.
why not
you have no idea
8 years of being a loyal customer, thousands of dollars in paint and other extras
yet treated like a criminal

ban me
remove my account, I'm sure you are aching to
I think you have a somewhat skewed perception of the concept of ownership within the game. If you've had posts deleted or something I'd be fairly sure it's due to the ludicrous accusations you're making more than as a result of some conspiracy to silence you. I mean I've only read one post from you and I already wish you'd shut up with this hysterical gibberish.

You're not. If you bought a red car and it broke down every six miles, would you consider that acceptable? No doubt you'd argue it is, because it's 'red' as advertised.
But I haven't bought a red car that breaks down every 6 minutes.

In fact the only real issue I have had with Odyssey is my Pioneer skin so far. You seem to want me to lose it over things that to me, I am happy to accept. Maybe if the things that are happening to others happened to me I would be enraged - but until that happens, I'm sorry I'm not.

Again, that doesn't stop me trying to empathise with those having greater issues than me - but sorry dude, it isn't going to make me change my mind on my situation at present (because it isn't breaking every 6 mins for me).

That appears to be your answer to everything.
Incorrect. However, it is the answer when people say the game is unplayable, yet I am playing it.

And I am saying that even though these forums do not represent the full player base, there seems to be some that are having real issues and some that are not. Again, all I can say is that I am happy I have what I have now and will be happier when things improve.

That does not take anything away from how you feel (and others). Its just we disagree; that's ok. <O

As I said, if this was clearly marked as an alpha, even beta (although it's frankly not even at that level) it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But it was not, it was billed officially as a full release.

I've been paying full attention and do not disbelieve what is happening to some people.

Now can you pay attention and understand I haven't had many of the issues others have, and I haven't been thrown out of game yet. But I was in Horizons - so I am not sure whether something that happened before will throw me into a rage because it happens again? Although if it happened every 6 mins I guess I would get annoyed - but again I haven't said I have any issues with those that are frustrated with their experience if they have had it worse than me.

I know this isn't going to get through to you, because you appear to have an almost religious need to act as an apologist for FDev in this, I'm just waiting for you to tell us how it's somehow our fault the game is crashing.

If you can, please tell me where I have apologised for FDev? Can you please tell me if I haven't acknowledged others have had a worse experience than me? Can you please tell me where I have done anything but comment on how I feel about my experience at the moment?

Now I'm sorry if your statement above was meant to trigger a different form of response from me, but as far as I am aware I have acknowledged your feeling about the situation in practically every response I've made. It is just not the experience I have had.

Again, I hope your issues get resolved. <O

everyone is having insane issues, the fault, since i dont have a fraction of the supposed problems is, windows 10, i have 7 still, 10 also ruined my friends ability to play other games multiple times where i was enjoying said game, til he tore out some useless update... maybe everyone should get linux with wine(since 7 is now impossible to get), which can also be run on a usb, incase linux is no better.

No. In beta, the programe is feature complete. In Odyssey, the planetary technology and the graphics engine are still in progress. By definition, we are still in alpha.
Sorry but they are feature complete. The feature is simply not optimized but it is finished from the point of view

So.... A few interesting things have been said here, the simple truth is that the EDO version is a bad mess due mostly to bad coding and trying very hard to create something wonderful, yet managing to get a lot of stuff very wrong in lots of ways. It would seem that basically, the game we were promised is not possible to create in such a vast and complex game. Instead, a shoehorning of a sub-par FPS was the main focus, when actually the focus should have been on player immersion and exploration. It is very clear that the FPS element took priority as it is the least buggy and broken part of the game, whereas simple things like completing missions or even equipping all the shiny new equipment were badly executed (seriously, an equipment menu should not be so broken, I suspect this is why we had no chance to access it during Alpha). I wish it was better, and know it will improve, but it is not even remotely what it promised.
