I think the reason we have the lighting problem where things are so extremely dark is because it help sells the fake image of things looking really deep and sharply cut from orbit. It literally makes the black shadows emphasise what really isn’t that spectacular when you come up close.I just want to post some typical in-game screens without too much attempt to beautify them. The 'mountains' look better than I thought, but what I've found again is they look decent from distance, but they really are pretty pathetic when you get right up to them. It's weird because from the ship it looks like they're over 1km high, and that might be in strictly 'above sea level terms', but there should be some proper massive mountains that just rise up steeply like volcanoes on Earth for instance.
I am pleased with the one in the valley with my ship. It is certainly far from flat but I think most people don't mean it's flat quite literally, more that there's a lack of impressive and extreme geology. That 'mountain' in the back right looks like it's much further away (as indeed is the case with all the ones you can see in the distance) and as such bigger, than it is, which is a common thread here.
Also how some of the flat terrain does actually look pretty good, like in my ice world pictures. The first image is a crater.

Update: Found some nice looking terrain after a few hours of looking. This is by far the best I've seen from Odyssey.
I still think Horizons looked better, but only by a little. Here's to hoping that they'll improve the tech a bit. The rest of the planet types are still just a bunch of grey repeats.
No screenshots from like...in that yoghurt stuff? Looks like (based on everything else) it's probably about 200-300m high, right?A monstrous crater and all of these ice canyons inside, and some life too.View attachment 230165View attachment 230166
Am I the only one who thinks that... these canyon walls look a bit... old? Like I think they could have done better than this. Thought it was better in Horizons personally. Rougher edges and all of that.View attachment 230095

Same planet. Vast areas of it are covered by deep canyons like this. I've seen lots of amazing landscapes in the last few days.
I'll agree that airless worlds have very little of this though, most being flatter (a lot flatter) than Horizons. I'm just saying.... there are some fantastic locations in the game and I'm not even looking for them. This is just accidental happenstance.
Edit: I guess you'll probably still think this is pathetic so maybe we just agree to disagree but this planet is covered with deep ravines. These pics don't do those mountains justice either... I just moved forward a touch and they're immense (there's another one behind my ship I didn't snap).

@Ydiss what are your settings? Is your terrain slider maxed out?It does look like crap, but unless you know the graphic settings and the snapshot settings it's hard to say.
That's because you're looking at a relatively low-resolution heightmap, which made up the entirety of outdoor terrain in games 15 or so years ago.Am I the only one who thinks that... these canyon walls look a bit... old? Hi They can always upgrade to HorizonsThat's because you're looking at a relatively low-resolution heightmap, which made up the entirety of outdoor terrain in games 15 or so years ago.
These days you can get nicer terrain meshes and stuff that let you cram in lots of detail where you need it most and less detail where it's not necessary. It looks old because it's a very old technology but frontier can't hand-craft millions of entire planets, and evidently using various algorithms to generate and modify a heightmap is the best solution they've found so far.
Now why can't they get something that looks more like Terragen or Geocontrol 2 or even Red Dead Redemption? Memory limitations I guess? That's beyond my knowledge.
Hope so too...how do you think White knights, who say that it looks amazing, will respond to that...oh...we told you they will fix everything...I was a little fanboying out on Elite Dangerous Odyssey because I really loved Horizons but with Odyssey I am starting to develop a love-hate relationship for example I like the darker cockpit and hangar but by visiting a couple of star systems and planets there is definitely a texture pattern that keeps repeating. I start to get the Godfather feeling "Look at how they massacred my boy". In Horizons the planets looked more harsh and rugged with sharper textures... more natural while in Odyssey its the opposite. I just hope its a bug and not the developers intentions at all.
All we can hope for is that the tech isn't fully implemented or there is some bug somewhere, because some terrain in these screenshots does look decent (although I haven't seen much)I was a little fanboying out on Elite Dangerous Odyssey because I really loved Horizons but with Odyssey I am starting to develop a love-hate relationship for example I like the darker cockpit and hangar but by visiting a couple of star systems and planets there is definitely a texture pattern that keeps repeating. Even the stars in a system looks darker... like when I look at a sun in Horizon you can feel yourself going blind while in Odyssey its just a dark orange ball floating in the distance. I feel like I've fallen in a trap by rushing and defending Odyssey. The more I play it the more I see you guys are right. I just really hope the developers feel the same way and will do something about it.

There are lots and lots of canyons spanning the whole planet, some big enough to hide a fleet carrier, others more narrow. You need to show the distance and stuff as you get no sense of scale.
I've just made some Europa shots and indeed on the stills the scale feels very different to in the game-- it looks much smaller in the stills. Still not vast enough though, by a long shot.
I can tell you that some textures up close look very good which is nice. But flying over ...you can get some good screenshots if the sun is setting ... otherwise terrain looks like pile of you know what especially when looking at horizons as as an indicator for the fly over visualsAll we can hope for is that the tech isn't fully implemented or there is some bug somewhere, because some terrain in these screenshots does look decent (although I haven't seen much)
