ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey Update 2021

No no no. 35-39fps when launched in vr, it is unplayable. But Elite, for a second, was already one of the few "full-fledged" games who supported virtual reality helmets. Low and ultra settings do not make any difference at all, how can that be? System requirements specified in Steam, are you serious?

My Elite launcher is in Preparing for update with an empty progress bar for like 10 minutes already. Clicking Close on the launcher gives me a warning that it's busy. Should I be patient or is the process stuck?
Edit: for others thinking it might be stuck: after like 20 minutes it's moved to the next phase, so patience is the answer.

DealerSHIP! :D Oh nvm it sounded more funny in my head :D

Actually we don't need to. See there's this ONE WEIRD TRICK that game publishers hate:

DO NOT PREORDER AND BUY ON RELEASE BEFORE THE REVIEWS FLOW IN

That's really all there is to it! Using this one simple trick, you can avoid situations like this altogether. Because it was a business decision to reap Fiscal Year numbers before end of May, and people took it, hook, line and sinker.

And yet, when I share this one simple trick, I'm met with adversity that "I'm telling people how to spend their money". When pointing the fact that this behaviour enables releases like that, there's only more hostility :p Truth hurts, I guess :D
Actually, this has been my philosophy for years now, since the industry has turned into the trainwreck of microtransactions and aesthetic-only economies, but in this case it did not help.

On release morning, I checked reviews. I saw 100ish "positive" reviews at around 10am my time. I waited another 2 hours, and saw a few more positive reviews posted, so I bought odyssey and fired it up. Instantly noticed FPS issues, vanishing missions, disconnects, menu issues, etc etc, and quit trying to play it after spending about an hour in game.

I go back to steam to make a review, and what do I find? I find "mostly negative" reviews in the 1000s, which were not visible less than an hour before, at around 12 noon my time. I comment to some of the early morning "positive" reviewers to ask how they made their reviews so early, and one of them said "this is an alpha review."

Steam/Frontier allowed alpha reviews to show up the morning of release, and those "positive" reviews set the average (that I could see) for half of 5/19. I assumed a "positive" average meant this was at least not a trainwreck, and I am perfectly patient with game devs who experience "some" problems on release. But that isnt what happened, this IS a trainwreck, the reviews that showed this were hidden from me, and I made a poor purchase.

I dont preorder anything, and I usually wait for others' reviews.

They weren't hidden by some malice, it's just unfortunate timing and maybe steam replication. And waiting a week wouldn't hurt you know 😁 see gaming journos and ytubers tear through this release... I also saw the review dip "realtime". By reviews I meant press / tubers / streamers actually playing the game.

OK, I'm not going to insult or accuse anyone now, however, I will ask you to pass on one simple truth to fdev.
a lot of odyssey's problems (not only performance related but also balance and gameplay) could be avoided if fdev were more open in their game development, and more proactively sharing what they are working on with the community (because I am pretty sure during the development of odyssey the concepts of various gameplay elements were changed several times, some of which were dropped because fdev didn't like them and the community would have loved them) and running tests in a timely manner, not 3 weeks before release.
Thank you.
Dannnggg this is AMAZING? that would be helpful...haha sike that is EXACTLY what they do on this website. You are actively participating in what you say they don't have. I'm pretty sure there are brighter people programming this game that understand why the bugs exist. Heck just acknowledging the fact that they built a 1:1 of the universe makes me understand how difficult it would be to get all the gears running smoothly. Most things produced by humans have to be recalled in some way form or fashion...you know why.... BECAUSE WERE HUMAN...and the the Thargoids are our Ancestors. The Thargoid device is a three sided bust of the Thargoid queen...sorry sorry the meta alloy dust has had effects on my mental. 🫂♥️🦖

After today's update, the bug with the transfer of goods between the ship and the Fleet Carrier is not resolved. The bug is in Odyssey, if you transfer your hold to the fleet carrier, the number does not decrease on the ship side, but increases in the Fleet Carrier, being able to give endless goods. The price of minerals becomes anything!

What the......Whhaat!!!??? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I am now so seethingly, disgustingly infuriated with Odyssey and so much so that it's spilling out indiscriminately and I'm stupidly cross with FDev.

I just got myself together to bite the bullet and settle down and really try and enjoy a game session of Odyssey in VR last evening. Amidst the devastating performance, broken DSS with unanchored reticle, free camera that's impossible to move or translate around the environment or my ship, and missing ship models or being inside enormous ship models when browsing vessels at Inter Astra, I cracked my knuckles and set out to a CZ through Frontline Solutions.

What in the hells is going on here!? After dying in VR, the CZ table pops up and everything else goes black! My invisible drop ship consumed by the infinite blackness of the void got ever closer to the landing zone and dropped me into the exact same thing. A bunch of nothingness. The screen went black, completely black. I could hear game sounds and hear my own movement and weapons fire but I couldn't see anything at all, regardless of what I did.

I could bring up the game menu and that's it. I lost all of my progress towards the fight and could do nothing but leave to the main menu and log in again.

After all the patience I mustered to play the game in the mess it is, I started to have fun and have a good time. The issues were still a pain but it wasn't so bad. Now not only can I not scan planets or participate in exobiology because of those issues, I can also not complete a Conflict Zone match under any circumstances if I die even once.

I'm really working on chilling myself out but this is catastrophic. I've not been so angry in a long long time. I want so bad to be chill and be on FDev's side and pull for the developers who work hard, but this makes it just about impossible.

For anyone else plagued by this scumbag issue, please vote on the issue in the issue tracker so hopefully it'll be resolved sooner. You can find the issue here: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32306

@RELSPI this X here is trying to steal Thargoid Queen from you!

"As with every era in Elite Dangerous’ history, we will be closely engaging with our community and continuing to react to feedback refining Odyssey through to the console launch."

Main issue with this disastrous release is FD did not engage "closely" with the community at all and feedback from players about wanting more input and once Alpha started about the many issues was ignored. There wasn't any transparency. FDEV have unfortunately gone more and more this way since Kickstarter (Kickstarter being the model of interaction they should have stuck with, or at least more open roadmap and Focused Feedback from rabid fans, imho).

EDO release has the hallmarks of necessary for the market financial results. The vaunted "market discipline" FD touted when going public has shown it's ugly side. If I were DB I would've kept the company private so I wasn't beholden to institutional investors and others looking for appreciation of stock price and then hitting revenue realization goals per quarter/half or even year would be less important. But then they wouldn't have gotten the huge cash infusion to grow. In any event, a release like this is something even investors won't like because it hurts the company reputation and prospects of future sales.

If they just labelled this release as Beta or early access and left Horizons untouched for everyone then it would have been better (although still needing a lot of work). And from the Alpha feedback including my own testing, that is clearly what they should have done.

I've made many posts about how FDEV could be more cutting edge and try to outpace the industry with community engagement / management. But it seems they have become victims of the standard corporate model out of fear or ease of working. The CM team seems to just be the sales team most of the time. Streaming a game-play session weekly isn't needed and is a waste of FDev money as hundreds of players already do that. FDEV should really focus on managing the suggestions forum and getting Focused Feedback and being more transparent and having an active forum presence. They would most likely be financially rewarded for that. As it is they are "making the game they want" and if the customers don't like it don't buy it; and as a private company that is fine if that is what the owner wants, but as a publicly traded company that is just stupid.

they have a lot of apologists who are making fake positive reviews on steam and a bunch of players who have been given this same song and dance for the past 6 years that they just accept this as the way released software should be.

Luckily, it seems that this was the straw that broke the camel's back for a healthy majority. I dont think these pathetic deflections and misdirections are going to be effective to mitigate the damage that has been done and is rightly deserved.

The longer it takes for them to fix the most obvious and damaging flaws, the more this damage will snow ball to gamers who haven't yet purchased odyssey or even elite dangerous.. And that's how you get fdev to change. and it needs to change.

The damage done by Odyssey is even more far-reaching... Not only have Frontier damaged their own reputation (equivalent to NMS at first-launch) but they have now damaged the whole gaming industry. Indeed, I for one will now never pre-order any game marketed on Steam (a case once bitten twice shy). So it is not just the playerbase that Frontier have cheated out of hard earned cash, rather they have also cheated all other game studios of pre-order money. Hello Games (NMS) realised their mistake and then took remedial action by way of close communication and truthful listening to their playerbase. And then they brought out over a dozen massive and free game enhancing expansions. I doubt very much that Frontier will do that. All Frontier will do is 'fix' 20% or so bugs and then continue to sell ship kits and paint jobs to grab even more of our money. That's really all they seem interested in... How a company can go down the drain so quick.

The hyperbole in this thread is a bit over the top...

Yes - this was poorly done for all the reasons that we know already.

Is it the worst ever? Maybe - but it's not fair to compare past releases with Oddity as the server demands and complexity are an order of magnitude more intricate than past feature introductions and the split server paradigm (Horizons/Oddity) have created a whole new set of issues clearly not completely anticipated by FD.

The worst strategic misfire in my opinion was developing a "release" that was known to be demanding at a new level on the graphics at a time when you can't get a new graphics card that you'll likely need to play Oddity on anything more than a 1080p screen without issues.

That said, take a deep breath - the graphics card problem is likely to ease up a bit in the months ahead, while at the same time FD will be working on optimizations.

The best ED gameplay has always been on the old version just before the beta of the next version - typically the .06 patch. From that perspective, Oddity is not any different from previous upgrades. We can still play Horizons until Oddity merges and we're forced into it. Hopefully, by then "this will be the game we're looking for."

Keep calm - it's not the end of the Universe as we know it.

As usual, FD's major blunder was poor PR. Telling everyone that there would be optimizations that were going to be in the release that would fix many of the reported issues in Alpha and then essentially just letting Alpha go live, was disingenuous at best.

Again - nothing unusual for FD. Communication has never been their strong suit.

I'm confident that they will eventually get Oddity sorted out and that we will look back on it as an improvement to ED

It's just going to take a bit more time than usual.

Until then, go cut your grass, take a sip of fine wine, watch a good movie, and accept gratefully that there's more to life than just ED

Peace
