Distant Worlds 3 expedition is postponed indefinitely (from DW Project Leader Erimus)

I'm really talking about space, not foot gameplay. Give it six months and people will have forgotten all about bases. The biggest sin FD did was to ignore the real meat of ED and thats space.
No argument. EDO is a massive content island, and nothing you do there impact the "space" part of a "space sim". The only reward that can be shared are credits, and they are a joke in EDO (100k for a restore mission ? 2-3m for a cz ? Lol).

Exploration get it the best, it extend the exploration gameplay a bit. If it wasn't ugly and buggy.

In a month or 2, the novelty will have worn off, and nobody but explorers will use spaceleg anymore.

I suppose the bigger question now is, what do FD do to get back on track- do they even care about these groups?

Or, does what FD think is ED:O 'done and working' the communities 'done and working'?

I almost feel sorry for the devs looking on the forum, its an almost universal failure that is fighting to even stay above water.

Some people were hanging in Deciat killing others and doing nothing more for months.
You mean doing space stuff in a space sim ?

Look, if you want a sci fi FPS, you just have to throw a stick on steam, plenty to come. Planetside 2 is still good enough, and you even have shields. It's also a f2p. In comparison, EDO is a very poor FPS. If there is nothing to link it to the rest, then it's just a poor FPS slapped onto another game.

They need to make it working. Later content will come. For example, I'm pretty sure those scavengers and NMLA is preparation for on-foot game play.

Another marker will be how FD updates Odysseys features. Classically FD drop features fast, my guess is FD will do the bare minimum and retask people for the other franchises they have.

I really, really want to be surprised, but six years of begging for scraps with Powerplay (sans the Open only part the changes are a few menus, and five formulas / numbers on a page) I can't see FD changing tack- not unless the dev team undergoes yet another shake up like we saw three years ago.

Agreed.

I don't live in the future.I hope they introduce more content, but I hope it will be more links to the actual space sim, and not more to the content island, to make it a bigger island. OFC, I'm a realist, so I know what will actually happens.

You could have had mixed mission, fight in space to find their base, then drop to low atmosphere to fight. How many time do you fight in low atmo against NPC ? It is steam background artwork, where you see 2 ships fighting each others above a SRV, yet we have none of that unless you play open and force it to happen.
And finally, land and attack the base. I'm sure professionals who are paid to find gameplay loop can find better than a random dude on the internet like myself.

Sad to hear, but not surprising.

I'm sure another group of people will plan something, but it won't be the same without Erimus and perhaps on nowhere near the same scale.

Hoping FD bounce back from the Odyssey release, learn some lessons, and improve things. But, i'm not overly hopeful.

Still, once FD sort performance out, i'll be back playing. Although maybe with a bit less enthusiasm than before.

And then you see the planet generation, and you start second guessing yourself.
I've seen enough amazing screenshots that it makes me want to go out and find those diamonds in the rough. I also prefer "bland" planets as the norm, since that's realistic. I have NMS on my PS4 if I want exceptional fantasy planets.

Of course the bugs, repeating patterns, broken LODs, etc. are all rubbish, but I'm crossing my fingers these will be fixed in the coming weeks. As for lighting, fixing ED's lighting my specialty ;)

Remember that a lof of those screenshots are using the ultraforcapture option, which is highly demanding (and apparently also gives a memory leak). And while they may be good, they are reptitive to. The ground texture is the same everywhere, just the color changes (fine powder ground). And they try to hide the stretched textures on the smoothest possible cliff ever that happen very often. A lot of world are either super duper flat with sudden elevation here and there, or the opposite, a dessicated mud planet.
The heatmap we have now is glitchy and you have numerous artifacts showing up.

And the one with the massive craters are copy pasted on many worlds.

The issue is not that the galaxy is populated by incredibly boring planets with a few "good ones", is that it's populated by numerous copy and pasted planets that have buggy features where you can see it's just a game.

Beyond the current bugs with lods and rock scattering and pattern and so on, we have others issues related to planet tech.
