Greetings Commanders,

As mentioned in David’s forum post on 25th May, we would like to share our immediate roadmap for Odyssey and talk a little more about performance and improvements as we move towards the console release later this year.

We’d like to take a moment to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we review your reports and feedback. We’ve been working hard to address critical issues - Update 2 went live yesterday, which followed Update 1, the previous 2 hotfix updates and server and stability fixes deployed in May. We have been seeing some awesome content shining through from Odyssey, but we know there’s still work to be done to make the experience as good as it can and to further address feedback.

To that end, here’s a short summary of our immediate roadmap of updates and the key focuses within them.

  • Update 3 – Thursday 10th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Loadout UI flow changes
    • Adding earned ARX for on-foot gameplay
  • Update 4 – Thursday 17th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Suit Livery UI flow changes
    • Codex CMDR stats
  • Update 5 – Thursday 24th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Shared missions
    • Galaxy & system map UI updates
    • Outfitting UI updates
Each of Updates 3 to 5 will be of a similar size to Updates 1 and 2, and contain fixes and enhancements to the overall Odyssey player experience, including incremental performance issues for specific circumstances and/or system configurations.

Planetary geometry and lighting is a topic that we know is close to the hearts of many of our explorers, and is something we are looking carefully at. We will of course, continue to update you over the coming weeks as those investigations progress.

While we are expecting to see specific and targeted performance improvements in the upcoming June updates, we are also aware that development work for console will allow for even larger performance optimisations and enhancements for PC too. Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release, and to bring our multi-platform community together once more, which will also allow us to bring even more global optimisation changes and updates to all Elite Dangerous Commanders.

Finally, we would also like to address the topic of communication. We are aware that many of you have been asking about greater communication, visibility and a change on how we share and update Elite Dangerous moving forward. While we do always try to give as clear a vision for the future as possible, such as Horizons or Beyond season roadmaps, we also must accept that this alone has not hit the mark. Our community have always been the beating heart of Elite Dangerous and we take the feedback very seriously. We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do to bring you even more in touch with our development progress. Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month. We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your patience, understanding and support as we continue to work hard to unlock the great potential of Odyssey for all Commanders.

Someone at FD should really feel ashamed for what you have done to the game.

Period.

That actually a roadmap i can believe in in the near future. And performanceis my main issue with a recommended GTX 1060. Yeah you should have wait with the release until performance weren't an issue anymore but I'm ok with it. You guys are working hard and get in touch with us fairly often.

In short:

Good Points:

+more communications

+UI Changes

+ Some Fixes

Bad Points:
- Lying to us

- "Communications" until now

- No new performance Updates on the Roadmap

- why was this released in this state.

With more Nuance:

Frontier, i really really love you game. Its one of the best games that I've experienced in my life. But over the years I see my love for this game slowly dying.

The horrible Launch of Odyssey was not the only problems, its like problems like, to have to cry for years to make combat in this game viable.

Its problems like engineering still being broken.

Its Problems like Ignoring Ship interior.

I don't really care for Odyssey because i bought that game for Space sim and the flying explorations combat mining training etc. were Huge reason.

Odyssey for me is a content island that's doesn't interact with the real meat of the game.

But that's not really an Issue for me.

I would have given your 60 Dollars just to walk on a planet.

My Problem is that still doesn't have atmospheric landing.

That is still can't land on the Moon.

That i haven't met a player in years.

If money is the Issue, price your DLC more, make another Kickstarter for Expansions.

I and I hope many others would pay you more money for Content that is worth our time.

I buy Paradox and Games where the Whole game can hit prices like 300 Dollars with all DLC but i gladly pay for it because i can't get these kinds of game anywhere else and because Paradox delivers.

What i want from you is more Communications. REAL Communications. I heard from a lot of developer that they "community " and the just ignore the fanbase anyway.

I don't want to have to scream for years for a bug to be changed or bounty pay out to be change.

If there is a problem, tell us. If for some reason think we are unreasonable, tell us. BUT TALK WITH US.

I wish you best of luck. o7

So...
Why didn't they say anything?
When a ROADMAP was announced, that word created a lot of expectations. And these were absolutely obvious and plastered all over the forum and elsewhere.

One single message saying that this ROADMAP is not going to include a lot of details (for these and those reasons) but rather outline the patching cycle and telling us a few general things about how they are approaching this, would have been enough.
Expectations should be met with information in order to manage the mob.

Doing it this way is like pouring gasoline into a dying fire.

Ladies and gents, calling for employee sackings isn't constructive criticism. The staff at Frontier who are undoubtedly working extremely hard don't want to see it. I don't want to moderate it.
So, to prevent any unnecessary and possibly permanent actions taken against your account, and to save me a lot of work, we'll have none of that.

Thanks.

Just echo this, as poor as this information provided is (they have form on this, 2018 beyond roadmap anyone?) It's a **** bag move to want people sacked. End of the day it's a game, sure it's great to be passionate about it but don't cross a line.

Can you make the heat maps for ExoGeology and ExoBiology actually DO SOMETHING other than be just a blue blob?

I have been called all of the usual insults over the last couple of years: White Knight, Apologist, Fanboi... Water off a duck's back as the ones doing the calling have their own problems and have to vent their ire somewhere.

The next few weeks will be interesting, I'll wait and see, but for now - I have an invite from one of my squadron to play a couple of disruptive surface missions, in Odyssey, of course, that I am going to have fun with 🥳
Well now that FD have hit rock bottom, its all up to them to repair a lot of burnt goodwill and rebuild really. I really do hope FD have a solid idea for the console release because if that goes south, its going to be very nasty.

Hi @Arthur Tolmie
one thing I really (and I am shure other long distance explorers as well) like to see is integration of a social hub, including vista genomics, into the Flight Carriers!
It is unreasonable to have to return from Outer Arm, Beagle Point, The void or other far distant galactic regions to Sag A* / Colonia / Bubble, only to register your exobiologic finds.
Especcially under the circumstance that lore (and game) -wise Galaxy-Wide communication without delay is implemented - so why shouldn´t Vista Genomics not be able to provide such service?

Let me try and extend that road map for you:

June: Beta will continue to get more bug fixes and further corrections to the broken UI flow.
July: Hopefully stable enough for them actually work on performance for the console release
August: nothing - radio silence while half the dev's have holidays and the rest hack code out to make it playable on consoles.
Sept: Gamma release - massive backlash from PC players due to downgrades required to make console release viable.
Oct: Console release. Servers grind to a halt again. Horizons players express their displeasure at the new UI and new lighting and loss of their fav planets.
Nov: final network fixes to make it stable with players on all platforms and game versions.
Dec: FDev start the hype for a new ship and new SRV's

Personally I'm fed up being a beta tester for FDev. Maybe if they hadn't lied to us by calling the May release a full release when it wasn't even close. Almost 400 bug fixes in 3 hotfixes and two large updates with three more large updates of fixes and adjustments planned. This IS still a Beta phase.
I'm out.

Hey Arthur and Frontier,

I address some of these issues in an open letter I popped up on twitter. If you haven't seen it already, here's the link:
