It's time for an offline version.

I think it's clear by now that Frontier either don't have or isn't willing to put in the resources required to support this game as a live service. So, I think it would be a good time for Frontier to release an offline version of the game so that the community can do the work (through mods and community patches) that Frontier isn't willing to do. I wanted to believe that FDev was still committed to the game, but it is difficult to maintain that belief. Sorry to be doom and gloom, but I love the game and have over 2500 hours in it. I just want it to live on even if Frontier gives up on it. Thoughts?

During the kickstarter I vaguely recall FDEV made a statement if they abandoned the game, they would 'make it available' to the community, or something like that but for the life of me I cannot find that piece of information. Does anyone recall something like this ?

I hope as a last act they up the sophistication of the AI flight model.

I recall hearing this as well, but I haven't seen the original statement.

An offline mode was promised originally, but never happened, so refunds were offered to anyone who bought into the game on that premise. I believe that was before it was even on Steam.

Kinda hard to share a galaxy with off-line mode, that's why the "no" was the final answer way back when. Considering how much cheating and god-mode exploits would be added through modding, it's a silly idea anyway.

:D S

I think to keep the database size down, you'd have to generate each system on the fly...which means long "load times" in hyperjumps, every time. Anyone that does exploring is familiar with this...long time in witchspace (in solo) means you are entering an unvisited system.

I'm not 100% sure this the reason...but a game of this scale is tough to run fully on client.

That being said, I was one of those vocal folks when offline was descoped.

Eh, I actually don't think it would be hard at all to run fully on the client. ED isn't really a large scale game asset wise - like No Man's Sky it's mostly procgen with a pretty limited number of actual assets.

Sure. I wouldn’t play it but it would definitely cut down on people attacking our bgs from solo and give solo players the experience they really want so it’s a win win.

I don’t see how it would be possible thought as the memory requirements for your system to have 4 billion star systems would be astronomical.

Yes, It was after the offline-mode was canceled and after the game release, if I recall correctly. I believe it was David Braben who said it. It was something to the effect of that they would like to offer it if the servers were ever stopped.

That being said, I wouldn't presume it is still part of the plan.
