State of the Game

Good morning Thread.
The other-timezone night shift can go sleep now. The other side of the globe just woke up.
I have a day off

OK, in the continuing series of "thing Misha did that he really shouldn't have", I just pulled the trigger on a PC upgrade.

I'm now mildly depressed.

1) It won't make a lick of difference in EDO until FD figures out how to properly utilize modern hardware.
2) There's now a Raxxla sized hole in my bank account.
3) In the current situation, it won't be operational until late August.

But, on the upside, the new rig (if it works as advertized), should pretty much slaughter any game that isn't named "Elite Dangerous: Odyssey."

Notices that he missed a rant about US cities and mispronounciations and feels that it's important that he intervenes with his own pet peeves.

  • they also have a Dublin.
  • they pronounce Notre-Dame "Nautreh-Dayme"

But worse: they say "I could give a sh*t" / "I could care less" when they meant "I couldn't give a sh*t" / "I couldn't care less". It's not complicated lads! What you are actually saying is that you totally care or that there's a chance you could care! YOU MEAN THE OPPOSITE!

Feels better after Influencer-Grade Opinion (rarity 5) is now publicly posted and goes back to coffee, waiting on first anti-COVID shot in the afternoon.

Did you shoot a graphics card at an acceptable price?
Still can't get one over here without 300% "rarity" tax. :(

No. I didn't. The only way I could even find a graphics card that wasn't from a decade ago was to go <shudder> "prebuilt" since they have access to unicorn farts that others don't. On the other hand, considering that "acceptable" right now means "your left kidney, please", I got it at a reasonable price, I suppose.

Company's good, though. I've helped friends that lived too far away for me to build them for them by putting one together for them online and then emailing them the code, and I've yet to have any of those friends unfriend me. I've even seen a couple of the builds later and found little if any fault in them. Solid job. And with a three year everything paid warranty, I'm not all that worried.

Except for the validity of my Geek Card, that is.

Hmm... I assume that it should be possible to buy a proper PC WITHOUT graphic card cheaply,
because for some desperados buying a complete PC to salvage graphic card is an acceptable workaround of market issues?

I have some 1080ti or 1060ti or something lying around, and I need a new PC to the office.
I could put something together to be able to run EDO on this on low settings, I would do APEX pre-modded gear hunting stations round trips at work only anyway, so fps is not an issue.

The 1080Ti is a solid card as long as it's not trying to run anything coded by amateurs like... Well... Won't go there.

As to the rest of the components, they're not all that expensive. So if you have a decent GPU lying about, and if the "prebuilt" vendor has a "no GPU option", you could do a lot worse. On the other hand, you could build it yourself too.

Still am on a 1050 here. Was planning the long-overdue upgrade, but well, it's not happening any time soon now... I did switch graphics to Low for better ground FPS, it's not fantastic (and bases on fire feel like a Myst DLC), but it's good enough to enjoy in random settlements and CZ. In theory, I could/should switch back to High when leaving the surface, but meh, can't be bothered. I've never been that graphically-obsessed anyhow.

Most of the other components you can get hold of, with the caveat that some CPUs (the Ryzen 5000s for example) may be difficult to source. It's really 'just' Graphics cards at the moment.
