No, the sequel had a weird thing with a "bearded men" only club who take a very small man as a mascot to do something illegal on the other side of the world. Involves stealing a ring from an underground hobo, riding wine barrel from a castle, burning a forest to scare talking wolves and unleashing a dragon on a small town made of wood.
Also eagles and talking giant wolves.

Could also be because the lore was too thick and the new hip writer crew wanted to do "something totally incredibly new"

Oh no, it's very serious. In that one there are only a few mages but they are actually useful. I mean, one of them speak to squirrels (and the other mages makes fun of him), the most popular keep smoking various stuff and throw fireworks party, their leader have a fetish for coloured clothing (and like the sound of his own voice), 2 are so unimportant they left and nobody cares anymore.
So maybe not that useful.
