Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Those are lovely! According to the official Frontier forum, good screenshots means it's a good game, so based on this why wouldn't I think SC is the superior game?
If only that were true. AAA graphics IMO are like icing on a cake: they can enhance something that’s already good without them, but they won’t disguise what’s rotten once you take a bite. The flip is also true IMO: “dated” graphics don’t make a bad game… in fact, I’m far more likely to give a game with “dated” graphics attention than the other way around. It’s usually a sign that the developer has focused their attention on good gameplay.

Of course… that strategy has no guarantee of success either… (cough) NMS (cough)

There is a lot of beauty in SC, and a lot of environmental diversity, it does make the explorer in me happy.

There will be a lot more of it when Pyro is in.

Ahh Pyro, fabled land of 2020.

Sounded good in 2019. Looked great at Citcon. (Mind you, so did the jump points that 2017 forgot). Lacks a certain something for now. (Probably 2020’s iCache ;))

Always fun exploring the past though. It’s another land.

I wish it was not so dependant on Server meshing, i would be happy to have a disguised load screen to go to Pyro.

Server meshing will have to come at some point but right now just build up the game and put in Server meshing when its good and ready, its not the thing that absolutely must come first.

A lot of other games, including this one do load screens, its ok.

I mean, getting your networking architecture into some kind of robust shape first is definitely the way to go.

It just becomes something of an issue when it’s miles away from that state after nearly a decade, you’re running your alpha as a GAAS, and all your engineering and design teams are waiting on it…

But hey, at least the art guys can stay busy ;)

Superior no, it's alpha and not released.
But you find in it some features that ED is lacking.
Mainly : ship interior, EVA, derelicts investigation on planets/EVA, ocean, weather with effect on fps/ships, caves with missions, emotes, chat, voip, atmospheric flight, AA weapons, money exchange, boarding missions, bartender that serve drinks, FPS gameplay tied to ship gameplay...

Iirc, and that's unlikely, the problem is that they just can't.

You are a client of the CryEngine 3 server which contains the "map", i.e. the entire system with everything.

In order to jump to another system, you need to either have this other system on the same map (not possible already and wouldn't scale anyhow), or have the other system on another server. (or have your current server switch map, but then that would switch the map for all players...)

This means that you, as a client of server A, should be disconnected and reconnected to server B with its different map. But that's not what CE3 was designed to do, hence why a single system. Handing over the client session from a server to the next isn't doable with their current engine, and they're still trying to hack it in.

And yeah, I agree with you, adding systems, even just 2/3 with just a few PoI each would make things a lot more attractive. Not to mention alleviate their pad ramming issues.

So server meshing in a single location is one thing, but server meshing multiple locations as one is quite another.

So you couldn't even join your friend's instance because he might be in a different system run by a different server.

I haven't been trolling around Daymar for an age...I usually mine somewhere else with better pickings. Still a nice screenie though :)

The only recent-ish screenie I have of Daymar is from when the MSR was released to flyable...

That looks like a Python?

A jump point will always be a loading screen, no matter how many meshings you slap on top. The only thing required for having a second (and more) star systems is not tying a game instance to a server directly but maintaining it as an entity elsewhere. This really should not be that hard, I have a feeling the issue with Pyro is actually Pyro.

I really don't understand why CIG don't do this. No need for server meshing, just a loading screen while you are moved over to another server which also has a 50 player limit.

Or, for that matter, if Pyro is ready, why they don't add it as a main menu option.

It couldn't be that Pyro is actually not ready? Surely not!

Oooh, we comparing what game A has that game B doesn't have?

Because i can guarantee you, ED's list of what it has that SC doesn't will be much much longer.

Although, come on man, how low in detail are we going? Are we really going to do the "bartender serves drinks" level of breaking things down? Because then things get a bit ridiculous.

According to the official Frontier forum, good screenshots mean it's a game with good visuals. Same as with SC. Being good screenshot simulators doesn't exempt any of the two from also having fun gameplay to go with the visuals.

Even our beloved X4 has its moments in the screenshots department. Luckily, the game isn't that bad either. ;)

And ED gets ridiculed enough for being nothing more than a glorified screenshot generator.

For those that are not aware, Old Duck took a recent thread of mine and repurposed it for SC ;)

LOL at that thread.

So Chris Roberts said you would get a USB space ship, get over it.

Yeah CIG said Answer the Call 2016, its been years, move on and go play another game.

lmao
