Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

Frontier's other IPs - including those recently announced like JW2 - are releasing native current-gen versions. It could be taken as evidence that we're reaching the end of development.
It's also a clear sign they will put Elite to the bare minimum and may resort, sooner or later, to maintenance mode, after they fixed the glaring issues that Odyssey brought about the game.

Maybe console releases are not making enough money to warrant the work that needs to be done?

That's literally what the OP said in the first post.

If that's the case, why pursue Odyssey on the OG consoles, and hamper PC updates on the process? Unconsidered.
Indeed it's a very strange state of affairs.

If it really isn't worth the financial investment why are they even continuing to invest even in the old generation of consoles? Might as well invest the time in making the PC version the best it can be.

I thought FDev wanted to grow the player base with the introduction of Odyssey? That's what was put over in the developer diaries.

With the new consoles selling like hot cakes and both PS5 and XSX unable to meet the demand it would to me be a perfect time to reinvigorate the console platform.

Clearly this isn't really what FDev appear to want to do.

I doubt I'll personally be buying EDO for PlayStation because the current 1080p backwards compatible version running on PS5 doesn't look great and unfortunately is less stable than it was on my PS4 Pro.

A real shame to be honest.

The question of course is that if there are no plans now, when would this change? Would this mean that Elite goes into 2023 while still using old gen capabilities? Then you'd also have a changeover period where players would move to the current gen version.

For all you PC people, it's worth bearing in mind that this would very much be holding up the game as they will have to keep it running on these consoles. So you have the choice of development being held back to keep these running, or significant work being undertaken to scale down content for older consoles.

Ok. All I'm going to say is that Odyssey needs severe optimisation and improvements before it will run on the current consoles. Let's see if FD can actually do that first before before talking about the latest consoles. I think a lot of people have their doubts that it can be done.

You'll have to believe us PC players that you DO NOT want Odyssey on console in the state it is right now.

This is incorrect. There is absolutely no legal requirement for DLC to be available across generations. See e.g. Final Fantasy which has DLC only available on PS5.

This is very different. The FF DLC is exclusive to PS5 - ED is a PS4 title, including all add-on content and will be playable on PS5. They can't just up and take a game off the PS4, that was developed and released for PS4 gamers, that would be abandoning a console.

Seems FDev would need to develop a new PS5 version and keep separate code for the PS4 version and they don't want to take on a new console. Nobody is being abandoned, a new console isn't being picked up.

It's no different at all. You're making up a limitation where there is none. Apologistic.

Current consoles? They're almost a decade old. Current gen is PS5 and XSX. Ancient Artifacts.

The point is they're delaying optimisation of the PC version to work on development for ancient consoles, with no plan for current generation consoles. Muddled.

And this while Hello Games immediately made an improved version of NMS available as soon as PS5 and Xbox Series X were released.

Question comes to mind as to who listens/cares about what players actualy want no?

I gave up hope for ED and can't realy be bothered any longer but this is so typical.

In my opinion, many of the systems in Odyssey have been designed for console controllers. The UI and the on-foot menu systems of Odyssey seem to have been deliberately designed for consoles. Hell, the graphics were downgraded for PC when the Xbox version came out. I can guarantee Odyssey is going to get a massive graphical downgrade when it's released on Xbox and PS4 just so it runs at 30 fps 920P or some crappy resolution like that.

I'm not sure why FDev would put so much effort into the "consolification" of the game's systems and graphics if they were killing the console versions. If anything, I feel like ED has continued to migrate more towards the console market than anything else, which seems insane given the platform demographics of this game. But for some reason, FDev seems hell-bent on turning ED into a massive console success. I'm guessing they look at EA, Ubisoft, and DICE as examples of the console market's potential for revenues and are desperately trying to figure out that market at all costs, especially at the expense of their largest platform.

ED is no longer a PC game ported to consoles... no... this is a console game being ported to PC. Why do you think Odyssey was released to PC six months before consoles in such a disastrous state? PC players are just beta testers here to work out all the kinks and provide telemetry for the console version's perfection. PC is just part of the QA team now, not part of the player base. The real release of Odyssey is going to be the console release. So, don't despair console players, you'll get a well-polished, perfectly playable version of Odyssey at the end of the year.
