Development Update 1 - June

Now hers something to think about, we have seen that all their future updates revolve around issues with their new dlc and they have no future plans around that as of yet, now let me ask if Odyssey went smoothly would that mean that nothing was coming after it until a much later date?

It would be either two options.

1. They knew Odyssey was going to release in a mess and are using it as a way to take longer with future content, thus releasing full price finished dlc at Beta lvl production standards.

On this point their "Great plans going forward after it releases" was nothing more than updates and fixes to prolong the life of so far content and playability (What we have now until console release) with no future being shown just yet (After telling the community a road map of content was coming)

2. They didn't know Odyssey was going to be such a mess (Their claim) yet if this is the case then had no plans for future content/updates thus also bad as they where lying about "Great plans going forward after it releases"

On the point of number two, if they had no idea about the release going to be so bad then why are they then saying no further update on the future as if it went well they would have had stuff they could be showing us now only with an extended release period that they wouldn't need to date, Adleast we would see what's coming when everything in the mess is fixed. (No road map at all about what could have happened after release and is now postponned)

Only these two options are relevant while showing either way Fdev have lied or are being deceitful to their player base regarding future content or have no idea what they are doing but avoid telling us that with vague answers.

Also please note I exempt CM's in this as they do a fine job but are just left in the dark nearly as much as us.

They could equally have arranged for a CM to work overtime...
Our very own mods here also noted that they were being told the content wasn't ready each time they asked about it.
So they drafted that only today? Oof. Shooting from the hip then, not a great sign.
And, in all fairness, why should an employee have to deal with the 'community' immediately when it is obvious that whatever they had posted today would be met with the promised toxicity? Post it at the end og the day, let the ranting happen, then come back in the morning and cherry pick whatever they wish to respond to.
I guess you can play it that way - which will agitate people (it did get my back hair up a little bit I have to say) further but I guess they're boss.
There have been all kinds of 'players' ranting all day that this is the 'final straw' and similar tat...

Is it a critical time?
I would say it is - I'm not too worried about the loud ones and those who keep living on the forum, but those who quietly turn their backs towards Frontier out of disappointment - and it is a disappointment, again. I had low expectations myself, but they, again, managed to underwhelm once more. They keep promising and building up towards these things and then it drops onto their feet. It's sad to see it happening again and again, I wish they just dropped this post on the forum unannounced, but they just can't help themselves hyping things up. Really should know better but hope springs eternal, doesn't it.

I always fared pretty well with a "under-promise, over-deliver" approach, Frontier seem to take a somewhat different angle.
A patch is due out tomorrow (which will 'fix' very little) - more 'players' will tell the forum how terrible things are, both before and after the patch, and more baying for the blood of Devs, Management and CMs is to be expected.
No doubt.
Personally, I think it should have been posted at 16:59:39 and at 16:59:59 a second post saying "Goodnight, see you all in the morning" made.

But, I will admit, my sense of humour is a little odd ;)
We'll, he came close enough to be fair... (and don't worry I can handle your humour ;))

If there were any future development plans for more content in the game currently in development, I'm sure that they would have posted some information in regards to this. They know it would have helped them reignite some enthusiasm from a fairly hostile community.
This. When Arf says "we're trying to figure out what the road map going forward is", I believe him. Makes sense, honestly. With this many fires to put out, why on earth would they be developing something new? They just bolted an FPS onto the side of their space sim and knocked it over.

I am honestly somewhat disappointed in this post. The majority of content in this post is an intro and a lot of back patting about all the work that has been put into the bugfixes. Am I happy those were done? Sure. Do I find it nauseating how much praise you must give yourself for providing fixes for this DLC that arguably should not have been released in this state as a finished product? Yes, yes I do.

There is a section about fixing lighting, but considering the scale of lighting issues in the game at the moment I am concerned that Frontier is just applying token fixes at the moment and then makes a big deal out of it. Then there is a section that does little more than say "Hey, we are aware that we have an issue tracker". It does not go into detail what you plan to do, in what timeframe you intend to fix those issues or if you even intend to fix those issues.

Then there is that you seem to have broken your promise to talk about powerplay. There are several bugs with it that have not been fixed for several months and are being actively abused. Frontier also seems to continue the trend of just kinda ignoring that that part of the game exists.

And the lack of a timetable for further fixes and naming of very few bugs for tomorrow's update makes me less and less hopeful that the 10+ bugs I can name from the top of my head will get fixed in any reasonable time. Or ever.

I'm sure Arf would tell us everything we need to know if Braben would let him.

Dear Frontier

I believe that it is time to accept the fact that you've made a total and unacceptable hash of this release. Your only reasonable and responsible course of action is to unwind it and set the game back to Horizons.

You need to go back to the drawing board on this and decide where you're going with this game and IF it is down the route of a half baked FPS then you must lean on the decades of experience preceding Odyssey. What you have released is not good enough by any measure.

Odyssey is an incongruous mess that is so painfully clearly ANOTHER license to grind in lieu of actual galaxy building content that I dispair over whether ANYONE actually has intent to continue building ED into a believable and living universe.

Unwind it, rethink, and re-release as something that the community actually wants. This is a blatant attempt to grab another segment of the gaming community but no attempt has been made to have it make sense in the broader ED context.

Odyssey is a developmental open wound and frankly you're bleeding out. Fix it before you no longer have the opportunity to do so.

Excellent post, couldn't have put it better myself, except I would have added no VR no buy at the end 😝😎

Half of this post was the equivalent of spacing out your words to fill the page. Minus the backslapping and self-congratulatory content, it's deeply concerning that, after this much time, they still don't know how to fix key issues. 100 Developers? Are any of them actually current employees or are we talking about 100 in total, who have, at some point or another, walked through your doors..

They promised the following off the top of my head...

VR feedback thread? Didn't happen.
Powerplay post? Didn't happen.
Developer stream? Didn't happen.

It is so disappointing to see the Community Management Team of a game I love and play to death, treat the player base so shambolically (except Sally - she is awesome!). This "Development Update" is useless - 90% of it we already knew and will find out the rest tomorrow anyway and please note, all of them are bug fixes for the most part which FDev would have picked up on had they actually bothered to play the game before shoving it out the door prematurely. Take away the screen shots, and it's like this "update" was written on napkin while Arf was having his lunch while reading the patch notes for tomorrow.

The remaining 10% consists of more vagueness and obfuscation which when you cut through all the fluff, says absolutely nothing at all about future plans/thoughts/ideas/whatever. I don't care if this current firestorm of drama has torpedoed their plans - it's on them for shipping a broken product and they could at least give some indication of what is on their workplan beyond "Fix Odyssey and Horizons, implement VR, launch on consoles"

You think the gaming industry would have learnt after NMS, Cyberpunk etc about shipping half-complete games and the turd storm that ensued (and note they are full games - Odyssey is a DLC which makes it worse) - I guess FDev never got the memo.
