Odyssey has driven away more players than it attracted

I played it once during my exploration voyage, stepped out of my ship, couldn't see a thing and logged out.

That was a few weeks back. Not bothered since.

Horizons though I play every day :D

Oh yes I forgot that formerly all the Horizons planets were gardens of Eden...

There were always great looking planets and crap looking planets, most in between being mostly meh. So no, we never had (and never will) have 100% spectacular planets due to their PG nature and FD's commitment to make them look like real planets and not fantasy wonderlands.

There are some issues that affect some people, but given than other people are barely affected by them obviously means those issues so can be fixed.

As a whole, new planets are much better and much more diverse and varied within them than old planets. You will say this is just my opinion, but so is yours anyway so there's that.

So excuse me if I don't take the issues some people are having as a sweeping "old planets were better" generalization.
But you realize FDev already has aknowledged issues with how planets are generated?

My personal belief is a boycott won't make FD change, it will only end ED(O) faster than anticipated, and that is something I don't want.
This isn't as clear as black or white. FDev has spent some money on EDO development, so they have an interest to keep sales at a certain level. And it is also not like players have lost ALL interest in ED.
Half (at least) the people constantly bashing Odyssey in this forum haven't actually tried it themselves and are basically just talking out of their rears or parroting second hand moans.
And you also have to be a politician to criticize politics right?
You can of course question the quality of arguments, but it is not like all arguments from non EDO player are invalid by default.

In my case, not driven away, but simply on hiatus until I can play it at a decent framerate.

I spent a good amount of money at the start of the year upgrading my computer except for the graphics card which was simply out of my budget, but the graphics card was still the part least in need of an upgrade. Turned out without the graphics card it makes Odyssey unplayable.

So, until FD significantly improve performance or i get a new card, i'm staying away. I didn't wait years for Odyssey just to play Horizons.

The rest of the issues, the UI, some of the gameplay loops (scanning lifeforms for example), the new planet generation (which FD recently seemed to say they can't for the moment fix), Engineers 2.0, and of course, the bugs, i can live with. But not at 20 FPS.

I thought we'd already established Steam charts are only one of three metrics.

Other being Frontier data and EDSM... as a lot of players still don't play through Steam.

I didn't even buy Odyssey and I still stopped playing.. why?

  • Everything is empty now, very hard to spontaneously meet any CMDRs in ships now. I assume even in Odyssey as most are stuck grinding on foot.
  • Very hard to find motivation to invest any time in Horizons.. knowing that sooner or later the buggy Odyssey will be pushed to me.. also knowing ship to ship combat won't be receiving any meaningful update in the next couple of years (too busy fixing Odyssey)
  • I'll just wait and see until Christmas' console release when the merge is complete.

From my experience ... I had COVID in November, since then I cannot work more then 3hrs/day (or play) any more. I just caught meself doing extremely stupid code if I do work more then 3 hrs now.
So my point is, that virus could do huge damage to whole industry.
Don't let the game devs see this. We already have enough companies blaming COVID for their own stupidity/incompetence.....

I was driven away a fair while before Odyssey to be honest, there was too much coming out of FD Towers making me go 'huh?' - for example the awful multicrew implementation followed by Frontier stating 'we'll mend it if you play it' (paraphrasing). I defended them and some of their ideas in the firm belief they would add onto and build on the foundations - they didn't for so many things from ship transfers to Thargoids.

I had been away long enough that I considered returning for Odyssey briefly but everything I was seeing and hearing was reaffirming my decision to step away and not luring me back at all. And now, with this fairly shambolic 'release'? - yeah, I'm gonna be sticking with X4 for my Space game itch when it needs a scratch.

Partly it's on me, I put and had too much faith in Frontier, I was quite possibly looking back with Elite and Elite II - Frontier shaded spectacles but at the same time was expecting more of that 'Elite' feeling too much? Was expecting more meat on the bones unrealistic? Was expecting Frontier to give us finished and in depth additions to the game as opposed to just frameworks stupid of me? Quite possibly but I couldn't keep playing Elite with Frontier's direction of travel and track record to that point, and for me at least Odyssey has entirely justified that decision.
