When you die on foot?

What's the downside or penalty for dying when you're on foot, while you're out in deep space?

As I understand it, if you die on foot, much like if you die in your SRV, you re-spawn in your ship, in orbit.
If you die in an SRV, you lose the SRV, but if you're on foot, what do you lose?

Do you lose exploration data or genetic samples?
Do you lose your EVA suit? The contents of your backpack at least, right?

It seems odd to me that there wouldn't be any penalty at all.
Geyser surfing, cliff diving could be fun if there's no real loss when you hit the ground too hard. You can always empty your backpack before you step on a geyser.

"You" are your ship. Until it is destroyed, "you" are not destroyed. On foot you will lose back pack contents, but nothing else.

And yes, it seems laughable especially for deep space when there is no one to "revive" you, but it's the mechanics we've been given.

In Odyssey, during the alpha you would definitely lose exploration and genetic data if you died on foot or in the SRV. Did they fix this? I don't recall anyone doing a real test to see how it works now.

In Horizons, dying in the SRV didn't destroy your data, only when you lost the ship. But of course it will eventually (later this year) merge with Odyssey and use the same code base.

I can confirm that blowing up in the SRV wipes out all your Biological Samples in the live build.
(yes, been there done that, got the T-Shirt ;) )

So if you hold alot of Data for Vista Genomics..... don't screw up and don't get cocky.

From that trip in your SRV or from before that trip as well?

Everything was gone, several days worth of Biological Samples from many Systems.
That event was a very important learning point for me, as it meant a completely different approach to operating the SRV or checking out POIs with any defenses.

I almost tried one of these Geyser express elevators while on foot last night but now I'm glad I resisted.

Thanks for all the replies. I was getting conflicting information from a few sources so I'm glad I asked here.
I'll hold off on the geyser surfing for now.

A safety hint though which is easy to overlook :

While the Shields don't do anything for the SRV vs. impacts for example, the Personal Shields on foot do protect against "hard landings" and absorb 100% of fall damage (within the Shield strength limitations).

So whenever you fear a "Deep Impact" that could result in injury or death - make sure you quickly turn on the Shields before landing hard on foot!

Note however that like the SRV they do not protect against collision damage - admittedly this is unlikely to be an issue unless someone runs you over with an SRV.

This is terrifying. With tens of thousands of light years to go until the next Vista Genomics, I am afraid of everything!

I got launched by something at a Thargoid site. First one I've been to, so I have no idea what I was looking at. Looked like an anenome.

Whatever it was, it lofted me a couple of kms into the air and the only thing that kept me alive was a combination of the jet pack and shields on landing.

Don't walk too close to a lava spout!
What happens if you exceed the suit temperature range? (800K) Is there any kind of grace period to allow you to get out of the hot zone without damage?
Does the battery drain rapidly and then your "health", or does your health start to drain right away?

I died on foot last night. The assumption of another game bug confused me. The disembark indicator was rapidly switching between safe and unsafe temp. After a few presses it allowed me leave my ship to a surface bathed in light from, M and Neutron class stars.
A short walk ended in my demise as I failed by a few feet to return to safety of my vessel.
Be careful out there folks.

Do you recall what the temperature was? Warnings or indicators?
As of yet I've never taken any "damage" so I have no idea if it's just insta death or if there's a countdown or grace period if you're over temp.

Sadly it all happened so quickly and I did not notice the temps. I had several audiable warning and red flashes began to appear on my hud indicating heat damage I assume. I began to head straight back but died just short of my ship. I had put my shield on but don't know if that helps with high temps?
The flickering safe/unsafe indicator could have been a bug but up until this point it has been either one or the other in regard to dangerous temperature. If anyone has this then I'd be cautious straying too far on foot from your ship or SRV.

The whole thing was over very suddenly.
Disembark: 19:57 13 seconds
Dead: 19:59 50 seconds.
