State of the Game

Ouch !
Cheers for the update - I presume the armchair developers are all screaming about "the engine", 'incompetent developers' etc, as they do here ?

Sounds like I should give it a skip for another 10 years or so, and see how it's getting on.
The FPS are poor and it seems full of bugs. Especially with NPCs.

The biggest difference is in how they approached both games. SC is highly detailed, with limited content. ED is the opposite. Essentially, SC went quality over quantity, ED went the opposite way.
SC have few stations and cities, but they are massive and all unique, with completely different look related to their functions. You even have a unique metro/tram/future stuff to use in the cities on the ground. ED have the same 4 tiny concourses and stations plastered all over the galaxy.
SC have only a single star system (and they plan to have about a hundred in the end ?), but planets have atmo, you have a gas giant atmo to fly into, weather, caves, detailed biomes, developped flora (imagine having grass on the ground everywhere it makes sense and not by cluster), atmo have an impact on all ship depending of their shapes (imagine having useful wings). They also have cities (big ones) you can fly over or land into. ED have 400billions star system that mostly look the same with the same grass growing at random spot on most planet.

Blackmaze made a nice series about the "good thing" he saw as an ED player. Despite being biased toward SC, it was very entertaining.

Both games have something different to offer. OFC, in there, people will bash SC for all its flaws, while I'm sure on the various SC forums they'll bash ED for all its flaws.

@Oztig
You may not get the pleasure of being intensely amused by me streaming SC. Not that I'm saying there are issues or anything... Let's just say I get better FPS in Odyssey, in 4K without the AMD helper running, in a surface installation with 12 Scavs & fire, than I do walking around the bedroom in SC...

See what you've done Rat we're getting off topic with the boring SC v Elite discussions.

The thing that amused me most of this, albeit very brief, tryout, is that the fans of the alpha decry spending $40 / £30 / 40 Euro for the Odyssey expansion (which is an expansion, remember!) but will pledge $60 / £47 / 60 Euro for an alpha with 'pretty stuff' 🤷‍♂️

I've seen some of them argue that dropping money in Croberts grubby mitts is an investment in the future of the game as a whole. Meanwhile Braben is pilloried as the second coming of Peter Molyneux because he had the audacity to charge 40 quid for an expansion six years after the last expansion was released. No question the launch was awful but a lot of the whining pre-dates even the alpha.

That's why it's so difficult to take some of the comments seriously. Look at how it was review bombed on Steam within the first few hours of going on sale. People couldn't possibly have had enough experience to review it but they just couldn't wait to stick the knife in. It just devalues their opinion as far as I'm concerned. Not that I cared for it in the first place.

But that is somewhat steam's fault - if steam has been open while playing and you end playing having played just for a couple of hours - steam might address you personally with a pop up like "you played ... now for a while, what do you think about it?" where you can immediately write a review. Eventually this is just done with too less reviews yet.
