Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

It will attract new players with different expectations - likely even more reasonable expectations - if they start to deliver more and more frequently. Just like ED - e.g. I never cared for the DD. I bought in at what it was and enjoyed it. Until I was old and crusty and they unleashed engineers upon us. And newer players still were OK with that.
It's just how audiences shift over time.

Yeah, its probably why CIG keep bringing in money. As long as they are adding something, new players gets to see that without knowing (or caring) about the history.

So, as old players become disgruntled or die, new players will keep the cash coming in.

Unless it reaches the point where even new people can't ignore how long its been in development and the amount of funding raised and how much time and money is still required to make a releasable product.

If CiG had any semblance of honesty in them, they'd drop the "alpha" pretence and admit that what you have now is what you'll ever get.
Well, not in its entirety, there will be patches and DLCs, as has been the case for 7 years already.
They are honest. They can't drop the alpha word because what you have now is absolutly not "what you'll ever get". In fact, they should call it a pre-alpha because each patch add new mechanisms to the game. An alpha should have all key gameplay functionalities implemented, it's not the case yet.

True, apart from the honest bit. There isn't a honest bone in the bodies of a number of key CIG personnel, starting with CR and ending with Tyler Witless.

How can they be honest with Witkin and fabulator Roberts around. Not to mention the rest of the nollock-wafflers.

Concerning the "alpha" - yeah, it kinda was Warframe's problem, too. We got to see it in a very early state and they had in-game shop and monetisation active. What we condemn with SC Digital Extremes also did - the difference is that the progress was "tangible". The game clearly evolved.
At some point you needed to ask: "So how long is this supposed to be alpha?" "Release", is a fuzzy word in games that get build on and on and on. Yet they marked down a point where they said: "Right, it works now and kinda is viable, but it's not what we envision it to be, but this is 1.0 now and there is more to come. (If you buy the MTs and that...)"

Its why i stopped talking about "release" a long time ago and started saying "releasable product", because otherwise you get the faithful waffling on about there being no hard release, development as a service, and saying what is release anyway?

By saying a releasable product you avoid that waffle because it basically then boils down to being about something that could be labelled a release and not get dumped on by critics.

DE's decision to mark down 1.0 was a good step. It boosted marketing - a release always does. And removed the shady aspect of its Limbo state. The committed to it. "We have a product and here it is and we have a whole range of products to add to it."
There is always risk and it could have gone south - sure - but that's business. SC tries not to be a business and that's why we call it a scam.

If they were honest, they would drop the "alpha" and changed it to "proof of concept". An alpha should at least contain the majority of gameplay systems and infrastructure. CIG are still figuring out the most basic networking and persistence issues. In an (supposedly) MMO.

Chris never fails to deliver... more ammo for us skeptics :D
Think I'll give the whole thing a miss like I have for the last 2 years and just catch up with the snippets of relevant/irrelevent bits on here or via YouTube when I can bothered watching the endless videos of talking heads uttering complete drivel...it's yet another marketing event aimed at bringing in new cash... like we haven't just had 7 or 8 of them in a row already this year :cautious:

Yes but watching the ramp kill the rover live is much better.
Saw that one already back in 2016. It's not a live event, all the videos will be edited and curated, as will the commentary. It's a glorified ISC video event so anyone hoping for a blooper reel will be sadly disappointed 🤷‍♂️

What if they show a nice slice of SQ42? Anyway, you can skip it during the streaming, they will post all the videos on YT for future watching anyway.

I remember they messed up one of their 'live playing demoes' on stage and a part literally replayed again. Was super awkward and in the version they uploaded to youtube it was edited out. Or the 'live sandworm one' with the surprise sandstorm, where they sniped an opponent. The player clearly missed but the npc was polite enough to not make a big deal about it and simply died anyway.

The live demoes are still often funny in that even staging a fake demo is something they cannot reliably pull off. :)

I have a certain level of tolerance with Ci¬G's ship selling marketing events...it's already been over burdened this year with the endless free-flys and resulting almost monthly ship 'sales' whilst the PU continually wallows in it's own brokenness'. I'm done with the talky head videos and no longer have an interest in very much that appears or is discussed in them unless it's already on my SSD or will be with the next patch release....and we all know that just aint happenin'...not this year or any year :)
