Update 1.8 coming to Planet Zoo, 14 December 🍽️

It was such a cozy livestream :D Thanks Eltanin and Tim (and the others behind the scenes!) for the lovely time. And of course Fran thanks for the lovely Fairytale of Lumi :D

So the guessing game has started. We have some descriptions of animals. I am deaf myself, so I couldn't hear it well enough to understand the descriptions, but when the story is posted online, I'll join the guessing game :D The only thing I heard well was the violin playing Mountain animal with a booming voice and hooves. That would be the Alpine Ibex I guess :)

I would bet on Wolverine, but possible inclusion of badger makes it highly unlikely
I would love to get both the wolverine and the badger. But I agree it seems unlikely. And if we can only have one, I choose the badger. I would actually be very sad if we don't get the badger. So I hope all those who speculate it will make it in are right.

I'd rather have the wolverine, but honestly, I ultimately want both. I can also see them putting a wolverine in with other types of packs ahead of the badger. Badger is definitely European specific, whereas Wolverine is in a range of locations.

Same, I would love both. But I know that won't fly. So I'll patiently wait for one or the other in the coming year

Expected more new Things to be announced but the few that got announced are absolutely awesome and I'm really glad we'll get them.

The Shop Counters will give us some really nice Possibilities, especially when we get them for the remaining Shops too (I like it to build custom Souvenir Shops, so it would be nice to not only get the Counters for the Souvenir Shops but also Decorations that'll make our Shops look more realistic like Stuffed Animals, T-Shirts, Books, DVDs....). 🙃 Maybe I'll try building a Pineapple shaped Shop once my Computer works properly again.

The Burrows are also really nice, especially the Option to show Guests what's going on inside. I really hope we will get this Option for the normal Webcams too because when I someday get the North America Pack I want to try to build a Beaver Dam where the Animals can actually go inside (hope the Hitbox isn't too ridiculous) and show the Guests the Inside of it on a Screen outside of the Enclosure. Being able to link the normal Cameras would also be nice for Stables, so if for Example a Giraffe is born in the Backstage Area of the Stable, the Guests could observe it on a Screen and see it taking its first Steps.
I'll definitely use the Burrows including a linked Display at the Wolf Enclosure in my currently planned Zoo. It will definitely be amazing. I wonder if the Entrance needs to be completely free or if it is like with the Dingo Pool (I know this from naturalizing the Dingo Pool in my Wolf Park and still keeping it usable) that there is only a small Access Point that needs to be free from any Objects. Even though I don't own the last 2 DLCs yet (but I might soon because I'll earn more Money from now on) I hope that we'll also get a small Burrow (that's placeable closely together) that can be used by the African Penguin. The Burrows might also be nice for Polar Bears because in Real Life captive Polar Bears require 2 Cubbing Dens (one for giving Birth and one in Case that the Mother wants to move her Offspring to another Burrow)

The Memorials will be so awesome and useful. It doesn't happen extremely often that I get overly attached to a Animal in the Game but if I do, I want a nice Way to remember it. Hopefully someday we will get Reward Statues for each Species in the Game, so we can create even better Memorials

One Thing I wish for the Restaurants is to be able to link the normal Picnic Tables to them/give the Restaurant Tables the Appearance of them
Burrowing triceratops confirmed. Niceee
🥳

frontier why did you kill jon
He knew too much 🙃

The burrows look great (hope its ok to post this, but it is from the official site, so it should be).

The Burrow looks nice even though I'd prefer it to not turn black immediately but have some shading in Front of it, so it will slowly get darker before getting to the actual Entrance. Looks like it should be easy to also make it look more artificial

Aw, look at those "earth pigs"
Funfact: The German Name for the Aardvark literally translates to Earth Piglet

kinda like the meerkat sentry post from ZT2, where it was a you but could serve as a small burrow
That one was great. I assume we don't have those in the Africa Pack? ☹️

I don't have a Clue what everyone's currently talking about, so I'll take a Look at the Stream later
lynx, badger, deer, ibex, salamander?
Only 2 of my most wanted European Animals but the Salamander would be really great. The first one of its kind in the Game. The Lynx is probably very likely to make it into the Game and if we get it, it'll probably get a Home in my new Zoo and in my Wildpark. Would be really nice to get a third Species of Deer and the Ibex. A few of my Favorites are missing if this turns out to be the Animals we'll get. As a European I just need a Europe Animal Pack but due to this not going to happen (at least for now) I hope to get the Rest of my Favorites in later Packs

You're more than welcome! I'll be posting the story tomorrow morning (GMT) 💚

I think there's approximately a 0% chance that we aren't getting a badger. One of the animals was repeatedly referred to as stout, which is an adjective I heavily associate with badgers over any other species. Additionally badgers are so synonymous with burrows I wouldn't be surprised if burrows' entire inclusion stemmed from a discussion on how to properly implement the badger.

Honestly I'm less positive on the ibex at this point than I am on the badger, and I'm 99% certain on the ibex.

Brown and furry could be a Hare or rabbit (Hare would be a bit weird in the same update as introducing burrowing) because we don't have a lagamorph at all yet and they are good for petting zoo style areas. I feel like most of the others mentioned are probably pretty big and think with having more small animals recently they may want to go for something smaller.

Would love it was something like a Stoat or Pine Martin to give us a mustalid and they are definitely brown and furry. If they were channeling the Town Musicians of Bremen then they definitely need some size variation.

Hayo Zookeepers,

It's time for a deep dive into what you can expect to see in the next Planet Zoo free update! We're happy to announce that Update 1.8 will be available for you to dig into from 14 December 🎉

If you saw our previous post about restaurants, you already know our developers have been cooking up some exciting new features for you all, but what else can you expect? Let's find out!

Restaurants

Restaurants are making their way to Planet Zoo! From fine dining to fast food, serve your guests a unique culinary experience with this new feature. With up to 20 tables able to be connected per restaurant, flexicolour table options, and table placement even being available in safe habitats, you've got the freedom to let your creativity run wild. For a full rundown of what you can expect, take a look at this forum post.

Shop Counters

Restaurants aren't the only new way your guests will be able to enjoy their time at your zoos - introducing shop counters! This alternate option of creating stores will provide you with a counter-only version for an assortment of shops, allowing you to create your own custom shop designs. Check out this list of what shop counters will be available:
  • Bernie's Bakes
  • Chief Beef
  • Cosmic Cow Milkshakes
  • Gulpee Energy
  • Gulpee Slush
  • Hot Dog Squad
  • Pipshot Smoothies
  • Streetfox Coffee
On top of this, there will be new small signs of the shop logos for you to place on your builds. What theme are you going to do for your first custom shop?

Burrows

Dig down deep with our new animal burrowing behaviour, just in time for winter! This will allow certain animals to explore burrows that can be freely placed in your zoos, giving them a place to seek shelter, sleep, adjust to the correct temperature, or even give birth! The entrance to the burrow will always align with the terrain, which leads to an underground chamber that will position itself below the entrance.

But that's not all! The burrows will come with internal habitat cameras that you can access through the burrow info panels, so you can see exactly what's happening underground! Plus, with the ability to link them to billboard screens, this means your guests won't miss out either!

Animal Memorials

Lastly, we know losing your animals is never easy, and that's why we're adding animal memorials into the game. Give your beloved inhabitants a proper dedication to ensure that while they may be gone, they're never forgotten, and will always be part of your zoo 💚 This will be split into two parts: a new UI section to keep track of the animals that have passed away in your zoos, and physical memorials that you can place as a tribute to specific animals.

The memorials UI will be added as a new screen to the Zoo overview UI, and will contain two lists: one to track habitat animal deaths, and one for exhibit animals. Here you will find info on each animal that has passed, including their name, age, date of death, and cause of death. This will have a max entry level of 200, so if you have a particularly busy zoo with several generations of animals, your oldest animals may end up overwritten. Don't worry though! If you have animals you want to ensure stay on the list, we've added the ability to mark entries as "favourites" which protects them from being deleted. (Please note: this UI will be backdated to include existing animal data but cause of death was not previously stored, so this field may be empty for deaths prior to the 1.8 update).

From this menu, you can select an animal and then choose a memorial asset to place into the world. When creating a memorial you will be given two tabs of options. The first, "Overview", will show you a summary of all content on the memorial and will let you adjust the custom image or font colour (depending on asset). The second tab, "Animal Information", will let you adjust animal-specific information, such as what information is shown, or adding a dedication line.

When choosing what dedication to make, you'll be able to choose from 3 memorial assets:
  • Memorial Plaque Screen - a screen asset with custom image functionality, similar to the billboards already in-game
  • Memorial Plaque Editable Sign Brass - a dedicated plaque featuring the animals' name and other information in brass
  • Memorial Plaque Editable Sign Limestone - a dedicated plaque featuring the animals' name and other information in limestone
On top of this, should you wish to create an animal memorial for an animal outside of your zoo (such as a real-world pet), you can do this too. Simply place a blank memorial and edit it manually to include the right information.

Guests in your zoos will interact with your memorials by viewing them if they are close by, stopping to read the dedication, and then receiving a small mood boost due to appreciation of fond memories with the animal.

We hope these various memorial features allow you to create meaningful dedications to your beloved animals, both from within and outside of Planet Zoo 💚

Of course, as always, these features come alongside various tweaks and fixes that will be included in the patch notes upon release. We hope you're excited for this new content, as we're certainly excited to bring it to you and see what new dimension it brings to your Zoo builds!

We'll have more news for you soon so keep an eye on our socials and here on the forums, but before that, join us today at 17:00 GMT on Twitch and Youtube for a special stream! Grab a blanket, get a hot choccy (Bernie has a great recipe in our restaurant post!), and settle down for cozy vibes with El & Tim. See you there! 💚❄️
wow it all sounds so awesome but I think we all would like for animations in the game for animals stuff members and guests

Whatever the slender, big-eyed animal is (I would agree with fire salamander) I think that one is the exhibit animal. My utterly arbitrary reasoning is that it is the only one of the five animals to not have an instrument in the story.

As for the others, lynx and ibex are almost a certainty (although I guess chamois are also a hooved mountain animal that could fit the description). I really hope the squat animal is a badger rather than a wolverine, just because it would add an animal with a different colour scheme to an otherwise very brown roster. The brown-furred animal is a complete mystery - was its size mentioned at all?

I think you're mixing up two different animals that were introduced at the same time in the story. One was stout, the other one was brown.
Oh come on! There are so many characters in this story!;)

All right, and the stout character plays a flute? Did I get that right? Groundhogs do make whistling noises.

Ok, here are my guesses for tomorrow:
  • Lynx
  • Ibex
  • Wolverine
  • Groundhog

aaaand Fire Salamander.
