Shooter Mechanics

Ah, i just bought most things at G3... no point starting at G1 when you can buy G3 off the bat.
Same here, although I picked up a few pre-modded G2 guns - never really use them though which speaks for itself. I may have to go on a dedicated tour of outposts via Apex for a couple of hours some time, as I barely come across G3 weapons these days.

Yeah, or go shopping directly after the weekly tick if you can.

I got my stuff just pootling around outposts and stations on the edge of the bubble.

Might go shopping again soon myself. Think i need a second rocket launcher, want to do a dual rocket launcher loadout.

But it takes only a few seconds to take down most NPCs, and that's with unengineered grade 3 weapons. Can only imagine that once you G5 and engineer stuff you only need to fart in their general direction and they will fall over. How much quicker do you want it?

Also, boosting number of enemies, probably not a good idea... you might be aware FD are facing performance issues as it is with Odyssey.
Depending on your weapon, we are talking about the AR50 or in general? well if you use the rocket that's a 1 shot kill at G5 still I understand what OP is trying to say, we need more enemies and for the kinetic weapons the TTK need to be adjusted.

I would rather fight 10 npcs instead of 2 that just suck up every round I throw at them.

Yeah, that's what I did to score my existing gear. Just has been a while since I did, and I don't feel I want to accumulate a lot of duplicates as I want to focus on one suit each and a few choice weapons that I will eventually upgrade to G5 (and add mods where possible, I don't think I'll unlock most engineers, perhaps Colonia might be the better alternative need to look at their unlock requirements in more detail).

Imagine being in the armour suit and getting hit by laser.
You have variants of each weapon.
A kinetic handcannon and a laser handcannon both with high armour peircing.
Instead of using lasers because its a shielded enemy you use them because you prefer the way they function.

In CZ i usually roll with the AR50 and the Aphelion.

As long as im hitting it doesn't take long to kill them... having said that, i'm pretty bad at shooters, so i don't always hit well. I don't even try for headshots.

I'm not in a rush to upgrade most things. I did upgrade/engineer the maverick suit to help with base missions/raids and engineering my shotgun with the silence mods so don't have to rely on the zapper so much for quiet takedowns. A grade 3 dominator and grade 3 weapons are just fine for low and medium CZ. Not sure about a high CZ with my skills.

I have unlocked all the engineers i need.

Yes, i wasn't talking about shooting others, was talking about being shot at by enemies if you had to choose between a suit that protected against only one or the other.

I think it's an OCD of mine, I want to arrive at a certain personal "set up" without unlocking and maxing out absolutely everything (but maxing what I own) if that makes sense - so I will probably not unlock the night vision mod but use another few that I have access to instead, that sort of way. And largely focus on Aphelion and AR50 with one handgun (tempted to stick to my G3 kinetic pistol over the Tormentor).

It still feels to me that G4/5 upgrades are largely unnecessary to play the game as I can complete all the challenges incl high CZs with what I have already, so I kinda ask myself why I'm even pursuing what I wrote above. OCD seems the best explanation to me!

The numbers of NPCS attacking vs the TTK, as @OP mentioned the TTK is ridiculous, boost the numbers and reduce the TTK.

edit:

if you use the executioner G5 it's a 2 hit TTK the drawback is it's slow and only 3 mag capacity, 5 if you mod it.

Different games.
If you like that one better, play that one and not the on-foot part of EDO (which is totally optional and kinda unrelated to the other aspects of Elite)

Don't you see how silly this is though - I have to basically search the internet for...

Nope.
Sorry but i don't see it.

How did you found about Soontill Relics?

In other words: this is how Elite worked, works and will work... 🤷‍♂️

Precisely

A g5 modded Intimidator can oneshot most of the NPCs
A g5 L-6 can 2 shot most of the NPCs
A g5 Executioner 2 shot any NPC
A g5 Tormentor can 2 shot most of the NPC (3-4 shots for top tier 5 chevron NPCs)

Edit and all of this 👆 assumes the targets are already shielded. If not, all that it takes is one shot from any of the above weapons

Funny example that one - I remember getting annoyed about not being given a hint by the game where to find them (i.e. not in Soontill) but another poster here pointed out that it's hinted at in the engineer UI in the small print (but easy to overlook). So it's at least there (but I missed it at the time).

When I first played the Alpha I did notice a complete lack of text/description/background of any of the EDO mats/items. At first I thought 'well I guess it's Alpha and they hadn't gotten round to adding that yet', but turns out they just never felt to bother. Imagine playing the game without being able to rely on online sources to work out where to find these things, especially considering the sheer size of the sandbox involved. It's just very weak sauce from a design perspective, and shows a lack of attention to detail/effort, especially considering they did bother for ship mats (it also adds to world building/lore fwiw). And that's ignoring the terrible drop rates for some of these items.

And while we can't do much about Frontier changing their stubbornly illogical/half-baked ways, there's really no need to defend them for it.

Funny example that one

We can go further... How do you know in which system to go to purchase a certain ship?
Can you do the Ram Tah quests without using the internet?

and, not at last, how you'd be playing the game without other people using the market connector?

FD is really scarce with info, but the community obliged.
I cannot say i dislike it. 🤷‍♂️

But complaining about it when it's been like this for 7+ years?

Look, I know the game is full of this stuff, but just because it somehow tries to make the web including 3rd party tools part of the game experience (which is a terribly lazy way to go about it, and that's 100% on FDev) we shouldn't give it a free pass when FDev go ahead and add more of it - instead of improving things and adding some much needed QoL. I want to play a game and keep browser interaction at the bare minimum (i.e. only when I'm truly stuck - unfortunately that happens quite a lot in Elite which I don't find satisfying personally, having to rely on others working things out often via grindy trial & error, or tools pulling data from FDev's servers and re-arranging them in a way that should be done within the game, within reason obvs). Alt-tabbing takes me out of the game, which is the exact opposite of why I play a game like Elite. I would love to think that I'm not the only player in the world with this preference.

And with the particular example of detail provided where to find EDO mats - this is one of the few examples where the game does give sufficient guidance (if pretty basic) for ship engineering mats - data, raw (in the sysmap) and manufacturing. Not adding this to EDO mats is just stupid - especially because with these it's less likely you run across them by accident like you do with ship mats. How hard could it have been to add a couple of lines saying "this material/data is ABC and can be found at XYZ". It's internally inconsistent.

As for the markets - I tried to play Elite trading just based on internal information - not only is it incomplete it's often downright false and misleading so yeah Inara et al is pretty much a requirement. Strangely enough Elite is the only game I've ever played where 3rd party tools are more useful than the actual game itself.

But then when I read posts such as yours (and I realise you're not alone I'm sure) I guess maybe Elite is the game "the community" deserves.

Anyways this thread isn't about that so will leave it be. But this sort of attitude is why Frontier can rest assured they don't have to put a lot of effort into improving anything because of this "it was always like this and is fine" attitude. I'm glad not everyone shares this sentiment otherwise we'd still be banging rocks against each other in a cave.

Playing since end of June means nothing.
You need to hit certain type of settlements in systems that are ruled by a certain government type to get smear campaigns

Search the forums

Surveillance equipment are easy - they're found in security lockers or as mission rewards
OP are kinda rare, but not that rare
If only that information was available ingame.
Frontier as always provide zero information regarding where to find certain items.
