Windows 11 question

I've been offered the upgrade from MS.

Toying with moving to Win 11.

The question is, do all of my executables move with the upgrade? What I'm getting at is, is do I have to reinstall all my programs or will they remain with all dll's and registry entries etc. intact? * Naturally, ED is the most important :D

One niggle is that an ethernet connection is not viable for me so I'm reliant on wif-fi (albeit pretty solid and quick at around 360mbits/sec). I've heard of wi-fi issues with the new platform.

* It's been a long time since I've done a Windows migrattion...

I have done the win11 upgrade and tbh I would "validate" all your installs as I have had some steam games not work unless I did validation :)

personally I would hit log off machine in the launcher b4 you do
as this should then put the servers in a state to expect a new machine next login which effectively is what it is to a deg

How long is the offer of the free upgrade to 11 open?

Depending on that answer i would hold off as long as possible IF your current Windows setup is working fine and you are happy with it. Just speaking as a longtime windows user that knows how it is for many 'early adopters' in these situations.

I am of the camp of if I don't have to toy I genrally don't :D
the logic being it gives them more time to iron out the bugs from the feedback others like yourself may pioneer

I’m using the Xbox Elite Controller 2 wirelessly. I tried everything, including rebinding everything. It acts as though I didn’t turn on the controller before loading the game which causes the same behaviour.
Luckily Microsoft provides an easy way to downgrade to W10, so I did that and it worked again 🤷🏻‍♂️

A new OS is a good reason for a fresh install. Clean up the old stuff. You can do the install on a new drive and keep the old drive for when you are not happy.

If you upgrade: The 'upgrade' should work fine but can always lead to problems. Especially if you did 'special' tricks to your pc...

No problem here on 2 machines, one Asus with Windows family (upgraded from Win 10), and one with a few MSI parts and Windows Pro.
On the other hand, if everything works perfectly on Windows 10, not worth changing for the moment if you don't have to. And as far as I know, Win 11 is 64 bits only.

True.. But I do hope no one is running w10 on 32 bits

Thanks everyone.

I'm not running any weird configs or even overclocking. I have a pretty standard build: Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX3080, X570 E gaming, 32GB, ROG Strix pro, 1TB o/s and program SSD, 2TB storage, Win 10 Pro and a decent internet connection.

My main concern is that wi-fi thing. I'll be a little bit screwed if moving to Win 11 buggers it up!

I have 2 PC's and access EDO via Steam that i've had upgraded to Windows 11. On one machine I experienced issues with VR performance so i reverted back to Windows 10 on that machine. The other one had no issues. Also i had one Steam game quit on me alltogether. So i think you should be careful and test all games etc before keeping the upgrade. You have 10 days to decide. Both upgrade and downgrade are fairly simple and did not take undue time.

Had no issues with Win11 as far as gaming/app functionality (carried over from Win10) goes .... there is one thing, however. I've ALWAYS BLOCKED COOKIES. If a site asks, I say NO and don't usually have a problem. I don't want to be tracked!

One of the latest updates to Win11 (which accompanied my new laptop) was an aggravating piece of cr-app which won't allow a site to function correctly (open) until I click on the little red X'd out cookie emblem (now occupying the far-right end of my address box line) and UNBLOCK THE SITE! At the same time, it informs me of how many (unwanted) cookies are being blocked at that site.... why would I care?

We are offered the option "not to be tracked" (privacy) by virtue of the "internet options" menu in Windows then MicroSoft bows to all those, themselves included, that whine about not being able to invade that privacy and build in an app like that.

One uncharacteristically intelligent thing they did was make it so once the site is unblocked it stays unblocked.(y)...go figure.
