Console Update

For me Elite Dangerous has more serious issues than all sorts of bugs and the drops of Mac and consoles. The game still lacks too much classic Elite content. It is still an almost empty game with very little things that remember me of the classic Elite games. Has anyone found one of the classic "Dodo" (dodecahedron) space stations yet? New ships were named after the classic ones but looking totally different. Many classic ships are missing and most parts of Elite Dangerous were not made to build upon each other but add things totally seperately to the game. So I often feel like playing "Whatever Dangerous". -.-

Can you not allow a development company who know how to develop this kind of content to work on it separately to allow Frontier to work on the "Core" game whilst another company works on Odyssey for Consoles and improving the rather poor performance on PC, since it's still performing so poorly that I have practically given up on the game?
And who's gonna pay the other company?

You’ve kept quiet on console development for so long just to drop this bombshell on us with the caveat of “We are exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce”.

Honestly you should have just continued to keep quiet whilst exploring those options and announced the answer along with this statement further down the line.

Without that option I imagine there will be a large amount of console players with thousands of hours of play time who are too disheartened to start again from scratch on a another platform that many of them probably don’t even own.

Seeing as the default response to questions regarding account transfers is essentially the same as the answer to those regarding Odyssey’s console release over the last year (at present have nothing to announce), I’m not holding out hope for a resolution.

Why is everyone saying that "This is the correct decision", "It was hard, but it's best for everyone"? Do people not realise that Arx is a thing on consoles and people spent money on there? They lose all of this not to mention the revenue for consoles is now gone completely as well as another big chunk of the player base, some of which already posting about leaving already IN THIS VERY THREAD. THIS HURTS PC TOO. For the love of god please stop with the half-baked sympathy posts and replace them with a post about a transfer from consoles to PC. After all the stuff they've been through don't you think they at least deserve that at the bare minimum? "The promise of it launching on consoles in Autumn 2021", then get left for nearly a year without any information, now this bombshell today. When Odyssey finally merges with Horizons, what even happens to Elite on consoles? Is there no information about that?

while this is really no surprise to me and i guess a lot of folks around here,
i do feel really sorry for the console community.
sometimes, being right does feel wrong

This is bad. Like: real bad. We hoped we could see far less fragmentation in the future, but at this point... I am almost afraid to ask but... What about putting horizons and Odyssey players together on PC? Is that an abandoned feature too?
I imagine this announcement clears the path for the new planetary tech to be integrated to the base PC client.

They clearly did though. That "we are exploring options but nothing to announce" language was first posted three minutes after DB's original post, and repeated nearly verbatim by multiple staff members. It's quite obvious they've discussed the account transfer question internally before today, don't know the answer yet, knew people would ask this question, and agreed on this statement as the response.
Their statement is that they are looking into it, that is not a prepared nor substantial statement.

At the risk of sounding "PC privileged", it's so odd to me how people don't own a PC that's even moderately capable of playing games. I read comments like "A free EDO license is not the point if I have to buy a gaming PC at first." and I'm gobsmacked that folks are gamers and don't have even an average gaming computer. Folks are really out here in the gaming world raw-d0gging it with no PC?

I'm not talking about a $3000 behemoth with a 55" OLED or something. You can build a 1080p gaming computer at a reasonable budget. Console gamers are already sitting on big TVs ($400-$1500) and $300-500 consoles with $60 controllers and $75 headsets and maybe even extra peripherals like a keyboard and mouse (+$$). So complaints about "oh a gaming PC is just too much" is a weak argument.

It's just... so odd to me. I refuse to believe that folks in 2022 don't have a PC of any sort. Is it just a Chromebook?

Re-reading this, yeah I guess I am "PC privileged" and this will be a wildly unpopular post. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, o7 console gamers. Hope FDev can port your stuff over to PC.

(I know it was promised to be an exclusive, but since we're at the broken promises part of the game... why not?)

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I know this is a tough decision, and I understand.
However, given this decision, I feel it only fair to allow console players to transfer over their progress to PC, including all their ranks, ships, materials, engineer unlocks and so on.
The previous system to only transfer over everything in credits was the only thing holding me back from switching to PC.
Having the option to a one-time total transfer over to PC, will let a lot of people continue to play the game, keeping your playerbase high and active, and your sales of Odessey will get a good surge of income. If third party sites like Inara can track all these things, then so should you be able to.
I fear that a lot of people will prefer quitting all together over having to start over with a lot of credits.

Where do we get full refunds for all the money wasted on the console versions then?

Multiplatform risk. Today it's console users getting the stick. Some other day it's PC users. When I see something is multiplatform I anticipate the may be bad ports and crappy support down the line. You want to play with less risk - don't buy multiplatform - especially when it's SaaS model.

Its a disappointing if some what predictable end to the console game.
I assume given the game is effectively dead Frontier will stop selling Arcs and other micro transactions to players and offer a full account transfer option and not just a credit transfer to PC if players so desire.
I'd really like to see a refund for the 23k ARX I have built up through paying or the free ones we accrued through playing. Or have the ability to give them away to a PC player at least.

Unsurprising and not unexpected news, given how poorly EDO's optimising has been going on PC (and for quite so long).
Quite a surprise that no consideration had been given to a build on current generation consoles though.

Now PC players might expect better focus on EDO, merging clients and improving performance? Or perhaps the inevitable, and predicted, announcement of servers shutting down on December 31st 2023?
