Console Update

A painful but logical decision.
Hope the team could spend more effort on next-gen game engine development.
EDO exposed lots of weakness and limitation of old cobra engine. A better engine can make this title moving forward, and leaving a hope of returning to console in long term.

Calm down and buy a PC version of the game.
Don't take it out on the game and the developers for not living up to your own hype.
Haven’t quite learned to read yet, have you son? It’s ok, words are hard for some people. Buying a PC version of the game does nothing to help me as I don’t own a PC, and if anything it only rewards Frontier for breaking their promise to console players. Why would I spend another $50 on a game I can’t play, and another $500+ on a system I’ll only use to play that game? And taking it out on the game and the developers is by far the BEST way to voice my displeasure at their dropping the ball. Isn’t that how the market works, you voice your displeasure by NOT giving them money? Bah, I don’t have time to give economics lessons to someone who can’t be bothered to learn reading comprehension.

That was a sad news for console gamers :(

But the thing is, consoles are always behind with the hardware where developers have to spend a lot of time to prioritizing the lowest hardware with performance where it prevents the game from evolving for PC players.

I think the release date for Odyssey was bad timing considering that the hardware suddenly became very expensive during that particular period but what can you do the times changes.

I play the game on PC with a GTX 970 and hope that the hardware will be cheaper in the future so I can upgrade.

I find it strange that some players are suggesting that 'at least you can still play horizons' or that 'you can play the same game today that you played yesterday' as if this is any consolation at all. Why would anyone want to invest their time and money (because you can be sure fdev won't drop the cash shop) in a second class game? Why would someone be happy to play a game knowing that there is no hope of an event, no hope of new ships, in fact no hope of anything ever changing at all. If that is not depressing enough you have to watch as every community post, every new hype up of new content, every new innovation (however remote those have been lately) still happens because actually the game still lives ...........just not for you. Why would anyone buy into or support that? There are other games out there that would welcome you into the community proper and not intentionally sideline you.

I have played on console. I played on PS4 for a while with my brother but my main was always on PC. I have not played since odyssey launched as I stated previously. The sheer disrespect fdev show their community only assures me I made the right decision. Wheel the old man out to throw a few lines out after ten months of silence and move on. No plan of action to temper the disappointment, nothing. He might as well have said 'hey folks we made a decision and you are not getting it'. They do not deserve the community they have. Mind you the way they keep casting sections of it adrift there won't be much of a community left soon.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
After 2+ years playing on console, this is a literal slap in the face. Thousands of hours completely wasted. I just spent big money on a console compatible flight stick for this game too. I really feel left out, unheard, and frankly. Ripped off. You see, I’m a disabled veteran, on a fixed income, in very rural America, I do not have a PC. I can not afford a pc, but you jerks,” PC Elitists “ I’ll call you from now on. Thank you so much for ruining the most fun I’ve had since pre war years. I hope you can’t sleep at night knowing your no better than that tease in high school, stringing guys along for years, just to brutally put them down and dump them on prom night. This news literally made me sick to my stomach. Bravo Chaps! You guys ought to join forces with Games Workshop! You could screw the whole gaming community that way!!!

I am a PC player, and we are not your enemy, as a VR player, I feel your pain. WRT you being a veteran, thank you for your service sir. As for FDev joining forces with games workshop, thay are already collaborating on FDev making warhammer games, amke of that what you will.

Actually it’s not an inferior product, it’s just fomo.

The positives are you get a new ui, and good planet surfaces from the new foot perspective.

Sadly, there are significant negatives that you don’t suffer in horizons. Mainly the visuals of the space game are materially worse, the system requirements to run it at an average expectation probably double or triple the requirements for horizons, excluding many existing players. There’s also no new content in odysee for many people, it’s only a ui and graphics update.

If it was just a performance issue I’d even forgive them but it’s not… space looks like a black wall with white dots, and a significant percentage of planets will trigger you to not believing you’re in space anymore when you see them. “No that can’t be it that’s got to be a bug.”

The only people who are included in odd are gameplay / stat focused players who are finished with the space game and have left it behind, and have upgraded to a mid range plus gaming pc since the nvidia 20xx range.

Not superior.
So admitt3dly Odyssey has made the game worse for those who purchased it? They WHY are they going to continually sink money into it AT THE EXPENSE of further developments for the console crowd? “Man, this new recipe is blander and has the side effect of making diners sh!+ themselves uncontrollably! Well, cancel the other dishes until we figure out our diaper salad!”

Talk about throwing good money after bad. The only way this is a good business idea is if they were looking to get out of the business altogether.

What is a "post-Odyssey codebase?" Is Oddysey being abandoned? Or is this bolt-on being better integrated into the game (with full VR for instance)? When will FDev reveal more of the plan?

Content creators rubbishing the game since their little "roundtable". Concerted efforts by players to review bomb it, and drive Frontier's share prices down. Constant insults of their employees incessantly on the forums. Developers and CMs getting threatened and harassed on their personal social medias.
I see this philosophy isn't exclusive of Apple:

Yamiks is a toxic clown who milked this game for hatesubs for at least a year before he finally got binned off from here and from any official recognition when FDev had had enough of him. His role in any downfall would be minimal because to suggest otherwise would be affording him a level of importance which he just doesn't have but he certainly contributed to the peanut gallery. He was the Richard Hammond of streamers though, an irritating little sycophant scampering around the big boy's table.
'Abrazos, no balazos'

When I read this, I presumed this meant the codebase after a certain date, perhaps Odyssey's release or an update. My impression of what that means, not official, obviously.

What a stupid move.
We wait patiently for 2 years for the console update, never rushing or making any fus out of it and as reward we get a "so long".
Yeah, the confidence on Frontier will be sky rocketing from now on, you honestly think I will ever put any money into another frontier product again?
