Console Update

The real question now is whether you keep Elite on consoles intact in its current form or shut it down completely, and if so, when. I'll be happy to keep playing Horizons but only if I know it has many years ahead, and won't be taken away in a few months. Please communicate with us more openly. The console community deserves more than a few short paragraphs after so many years of play.

Five years good>
after that, it can run as a sidecar on Interplanetary Coaster Evolution

Not surprising news but I have some respect for FDEV finally saying it out loud.
What I find baffling is that the "this will be good for the future development of PC ED" promise actually still works on some people. It's clear as crystal ED has no long term left - this trajectory has been going on for years.
And maybe that's ok. It's an old game held together with duct tape and glue. Maybe it's time for everyone to move on and go outside.

This is so wrong. ED is much better now than what it ever was, and improves at every iteration (but I suspect you haven't been able to play EDO so you wouldn't know...). After they got rid of consoles, they can focus on PC, the right (albeit sad) decision, long overdue.

I strongly disagree, which is why I stopped playing at the release of Odyssey. But that's fine, we don't have to agree - circle back here in a year and we will see who was correct.

I do not understand what is so difficult to understand? Read David Braben's message.
Frontier has been trying to optimize Odyssey for PC for a year and fails.
That's why there's no point in releasing it on consoles.

My guess:
It's just not worth it financially.
The revenue from console sales was certainly budgeted during the development of Odyssey.
Now add 1 and 1 together.

I've seen many 'Communities' online making light of the news, as a pc Cmdr I really do feel for the Console Community. I accept that to push on has meant to focus at the expense of consoles, but does this mean that tickets etc will soon be answered for pc only? Many console Cmdrs will be truly devastated - as I would be, so leaving consoles as they are in their current state must surely mean ensuring what they have at this point will be regularly monitored and addressed?

Nobody plays Tetris any more, or other old games. Because they will never advance developmentally.
I am assuming you are being a little sarcastic to prove a point .... however just in case, I would say 25% of my gaming is on games and platforms which were out before many of the people on this forum were out of nappies.

I completed Zelda LTTP on the SNES recently with my lad as well as fantastic adventures of dizzy on the nes. (oh and never forget speedball 2 and sensi soccer and ko2 on Amiga)

however it's a slight false equivalence. those games are all self contained complete experiences. Elite isn't. I know over the years I forgave a lot about the game and filled in the blanks because of the promise that the game had going forward and in the hope that those blanks got fleshed out. Elite sold many copies and got a huge amount of press not because of what it is....... but what it is aiming to be.

for now that dream is still (tenuously) alive on PC but for console gamers it is not. so sure. you can technically still play everything you could last week on PS4.

but it's a bit like a really promising sci-fi show that had a slow but promising start.......... and ended on a complete cliffhanger. I know I often don't bother with stuff like that if I know that it isn't going to be resolved. I absolutely certainly would not pay to watch it as it isn't finished.

This means then I need to buy a gaming pc. Last time I did this was for x3 Terran conflict by Egosoft and tbh it was bug ridden. Don't know if I can muster the enthusiasm of purchasing a gaming pc having purchased two xbox for me and my son to play. o7

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.

That’s just fantastic news... Not too long ago I transferred my game from PC to Xbox Series Xand then bought an Xbox HOTAS just for this game.

Steering clear of Frontier from now on, bunch of clowns.

This is OK to me. Please concentrate your efforts on the PC version, implement an account transfer to console players and please start a complete new strategy on Powerplay. The powerplay right now is so boring, can’t be worser.

I gotta say, I am genuinely angry. Partly my own fault for optimistically believing Odyssey really would come to consoles eventually despite all the evidence.

but jeez - bought it to play on Mac, Mac support dropped; no worries I will buy it for Xbox… now that’s been dropped as well. VR too but at least I wasn’t invested in that.

maybe my memory is failing me, but I can’t recall any time in almost 40 years of gaming where the feature set and platform support for a game has been repeatedly stripped back like this. It seems like the logical endpoint of a development process that completely underestimated the effort needed for a multiplatform live service game and never managed to dig themselves out of the hole they got into years back.

I guess my ED adventure ends here - no wish to buy a PC just for one game, nor to keep playing ED legacy.

and to announce this surely, surely knowing the very first question would be “can we transfer to PC” and having no answer… mind boggling lack of foresight? Or holding off on more bad news till later?

Disgusted :(

Well, from what I've came to discover, the quasi-totality of people who "stopped playing at the release of EDO" and complain ever since about EDO are console players...

My concern, as with others, will be the future of the current game. Yes, it's a kick in the teeth for console owners, but it will also be of major concern for those of us on PC. If development stops in one area, does it follow that it moves to a "winding down" in others? I don't know.

It would be interesting to see what the roadmap for the game currently looks like. I have the nagging feeling we're looking at the game's demise and an uncertain future. I hope I'm wrong and would love to be enlightened to the contrary.
