Console Update

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I'm severely disappointed with this news. Considering all the time, effort and real world money I put into this game. Whilst singing f devs praises. To hang up my helmet is a sad thing. I hope in the future you give me a reason to play a frontier game again. For now I choose not to. Please reconsider.

May if they did not release edo straight from the alpha stage they may not be in this situation now

Unfortunate turn of events for sure. ED is not dead on XB just not EDO playable. This happened the other way for the first game I really liked, Hawken (mechwarrior game), when PC version servers were shut down within months of the announcement. I can still play it on XBSX although there's been no new content or updates in the last three years.

When I got into Power Play on discord and the majority of pilots there were PC so I built an account on PC just to wing with them and get a better HOTAS. I decided to keep both accounts and now I've been splitting my time playing elite between XB and PC gaining PP strategic advantages, so hopefully there are another three years for ED on XB - maybe even the potential for ED.II for XBSX with all new non-cobra engine - I'd buy it.

If that never happens (most likely scenario) and for those who have years invested I'd offer this observation. When I started my PC account I was amazed at how quickly I got past the initial ramp-up to having fun and not grinding to get a ship that could provide the same fun my XB account did. Within weeks I was back into a Cutter and trading my way to my first billion. Found all kinds of advantages to leverage both from my experience on XB plus how to transfer CC via my XB FC - so I did not need FDev to move my CC and got to keep all 38 of my ships too. Was not long before I could buy my PC FC and then it was all fun no grind, using both FCs and their fleet of ships to jump from one play style to another, or just really focus on PP BGS. If you have a PC, getting ED on it is worth buying for more than one reason - and while there is a downside to building a new account, it does not last long, and the upside will surprise you quickly: just new and different, still fun. Was glad I kept my XB account and did not move it - the strategic value alone in PP BGS and ability to shift focus to something different is worth the ramp up grind.

Bottom line: Elite Dangerous on Xbox is not dead it is just going to be different for a while - much the same a real life.

No thank you for this announcement. The way you choose to run this company and handle messaging to the players is nothing short of absurd. It’s common practice to lead players on for months and then break bad news. This isn’t even close to the first time

You guys never hit deadlines, even before the pandemic. Obvious and fundamental issues with the game persist for years.
We are exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce.

to make this kind of announcement with NO plan in place is pure incompetence. After thousands of hours, hundreds of dollars, and many years, I’m done.

This game has so much potential, but it’s literally been mismanaged to death. Ultimately that’s on you Braben.

good luck, have fun. You can has my stuff. Frontier is never getting another dime from me

I put a little farewell post up on my Insta, and almost immediately and, rather unsurprisingly had a reply saying ‘it’s my fault, I should buy a PC and join the master race.’

... I mean, I made my choice to have PlayStation as my primary gaming platform, & PC as my Secondary (for when my wife is watching TV or something on my PlayStation on D+/Netflix that I’m not interested in).
So my time on PC is far, far less.

I checked how many hours I’ve put in:

PC - 270 hours.
PlayStation - 1546 hours.

Ok I think I've calmed down enough to write this now. I joined ED on Xbox at GPP launch. I have spent 1000s of hours roaming the galaxy exploring, I've been to beagle point as part of DW2, been to colonia and other locations. I've grinded like we all have to get my Cutter, corvette etc. I've unlocked and grinded engineers and matts. Unlocked powerplay modules and weapons. Unlocked various guardian tech and Killed thargoids joined in numerous community goals and so much more. Elite is my most played game ever. So to hear that fdev are dropping support for consoles is a real blow. Yes they are keeping it running but as others have said for how long? At this moment in time I cannot decide if I want to continue or not. I still have things I wish to do in game but do I have the resolve not knowing if it will just stop working one day? Time will tell I guess. As others have said I just hope at the very least fdev allow all console players to have a free copy of elite and port all progress and assets across to pc for free. I certainly don't have the will to start again. Hopefully someone will see sense and realise that console players are a big part of the community and deserve a working version on Xbox series X and PS5 at least or a free transfer to PC.
Here is hoping. But all that said if this is the state of play I will no longer purchase anything from frontier in the future.

@Bruce G Question, will this change anything regarding Horizons and Odyssey being two "seperate" games? I can play Horizons without any problem but in Odyssey I get between 2 and 13 FPS which makes it very hard to play (which is understandable since Odyssey requirements are much higher then Horizons). If these two versions would merge I wouldn't be able to play Elite Dangerous anymore, which would basicly means I would have paid for something that my pc was able to handle but can't anymore. Would kinda suck if I wasted all that money for a game I wouldn't be able to play anymore because the pc requirements suddenly change. Thanks

they can do it “by accident“ but not on purpose?

I have it on both and I mainly play PS4 it’s a shame to lose commander due to this and fdev if u actually read these reply’s to ur announcement u will realises that ur losing a huge community of gamers and yes I understand that it come down to money with companies like yours but if u listened to ur players on the first place you would of know what need to be worked on and what needs fix and not rush to hit that profits margin and make a game that is I’ll last

Look i am a 38 year old plumber with a full time job, i have over 1000 hours in the game on xbox, had it on day one of game preview, two elite ranks, grinded for both a cutter and corvette, not to mention all the mat gathering and engineering iv done to my ships or the billion i have in credits. bought odyssey on steam and have put a little time in, mainly just to try it out while i waited on the xbox release. there is no world where i re do all that work a second time just to be able to continue the game the way it was intended. you have to, (if you wish to retain what little respect you company has left) make it possible to move profiles to pc with all ranks ships and progression intact.
