Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: The Aquarian Job (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 2)

Morning all, just a 'little one' Can we clarify the actual build status of the Reg Cobra. I wouldn’t want to put in the fastest time over all and hump the rest of the field (hahaha I wish), only to discover I’m disqualified because the 'Ninky-Nock' has failed scrutineering.

Can we confirm which build we should be using, is it:
  • Alex Turner build
    • Shield Gen, cargo rack & Cannons fitted, BUT powered down
  • Brother Sabathius Build:
    • Shield Gen, Cargo Rack & Cannons removed all together
Apologies if I have opened a can of worms. Thanks gang

Even if it is a can of worms - it needed opening. Since this isn't my race, I didn't follow the thread in Discord as close as I could have, so I assumed that had been clarified. Turns out that it hasn't - but we still got a week or so.

For the Aquarian job, I removed things that were not needed, the rest of the build is the same. The easiest way to enforce no shields was to remove the module. The cannons are useless weight, cargo rack isn't needed for this race.

Use the variant listed in the first post. Store them at London Relay and re-fit them after the race.

Magic, thanks muchly

OK, sorry to mess everyone around but I think I'm going to overrule @Brother Sabathius on this one and request that we return to the original regulation class Cobra build as linked in the main Magic 8 Ball forum thread. The idea was that we'd be using (and learning to love) the exact same ship for the entire championship (same weight, handling, range, etc). That's the reason we flew round and around Pareco carrying guns and an SRV. Simply fly (or transport) the ship from one race location to the next and you're basically ready to go. Tweaking modules per race (whether to save power or to comply with certain regulations, such as the no shields requirement in this instance) should be done by turning modules off before the start, but not by removing them entirely.

So basically this: https://s.orbis.zone/ioey

Now it's been argued that, with the shields still fitted, it would be very easy to submit evidence with a modules screenshot showing the shields turned off but to then sneakily flick them back on again during the race. Well firstly that's cheating and I would simply ask (and trust) people not to do it please. We're trying to set fun challenges here so you really would only be cheating yourself by circumventing the rules of the challenge. And secondly, since there are time bonuses for damaging the ship, having those shields on can actually be a disadvantage when you're trying to smash the last few percent off it before the final landing. Also - boosting through a mailslot or coming in hot for a fast planetary landing is far more thrilling when you know you have no shields to protect you!

Apologies for any confusion caused (especially to Brother Sabathius who's kindly volunteered to run this race for us) but better to sort these issues out now rather than half way through the race.

Ok, I have arrived in system and had a couple of practice goes, which were, umm, interesting... Bouncing down the cliffs like a burst football seems the way to go at the moment. This week will be educational, and expensive :D

Intent to finish in the same ship I started with
CMDR Martinjameson
Regulation Cobra: There Goes Me Whippet and the newly christened Young Whippetsnapper
Unlimited: Imperial Courier Me Whippet's on Fire! and whatever 8-wheeled death machine I can pinch off another of my ships

See you out there commanders, and if you spot an SRV stuck upside down with its wheels in the air, give me a wave as you go past

It should be fun, I have done practice and looking forward to it. I have rarely competed well in SRV races, but thanks to some serious effort and tips from our Mr Turner I can with confidence claim to be at least an average srv driver now. Still gonna blow up though!

Nope. The trick we were winking about (and I may as well reveal it) is that there is a tourist beacon placed 5km from Cooper Arena. It was discovered years back that you can drop on these as you would at a station, and thus get a shortcut to the surface. You still need to fly to a landing point 8km away to begin your SRV run though.
Thanks for this, I'm not sure I would've figured that out, and it was a revelation when I made it work in a practice run.

Mr Turner's very good at those tip things o7

(and the blowing up part ;) )

I do love how the terrain around Cooper really makes you think about where's the best 8km start point and then where's the best 5km exit route.
Doesn't it.

Hopefully replacement parts for my stick arrive in time for me to put my theory into practice, I fully expect Shaye and Alec to be cruising past previous SRV times.

As if I would not...

First run tonight (midnight was 5pm here) was the fastest, then 2 disasters trying to drop into Orbital Cruise at Bridger, and then a few attempts a minute or so slower than my first time. I hope this isn't going to be a repeat of last month when I couldn't beat my first race time...

Video of that first run attached for your entertainment, if you watch it for go-faster clues you'll end up going slower! :D

And since this might be the first entry, I shall go to bed thinking I'm at the top of the leaderboard!🤪 (Also the bottom)😬
